Game #34: New York Knicks (17-17) vs. Miami Heat (26-7)

Photo

A game that has been debated as one of the most anticipated regular-season matchups in Heat history is finally upon us, as the Miami Heat will welcome the New York Knicks to the AAA on Thursday night. The main reason for all the hype is the Knicks new point guard Jeremy Lin, who has captivated the league with his play combined with the Knicks sudden streak of wins.

The Heat come in on a seven game winning streak, having won each game by at least 12 points. They had a similar streak last season, winning nine straight by double figures. Miami has been playing at an extremely high level for a while now. They have won 18 of their last 21 games overall, which is a streak that no other team in the league can match.

Star-divide

The Knicks come into this game fresh off of a five game homestand in which they won three games, including a win over the defending champion Dallas Mavericks. They are on a run of winning nine of their last eleven games, a streak that began with the emergence of Jeremy Lin. He is averaging 14.6 points, 5.7 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 3.4 turnovers, but since being injected into the regular rotation 11 games ago he is putting up 23.9 points and 9.2 assists.

This is the final game for the Heat before the All-Star break. A good portion of the team will be heading up to Orlando for the weekend, as several Heat players are participating in one thing or another. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh will all play in Sunday nights All-Star Game. Mario Chalmers and James Jones will compete in Saturday nights 3-Point Shootout, and rookie Norris Cole will play in Friday nights Rising Stars Challenge.

GAME NOTES

  • The Heat are 14-2 at home. New York is 7-8 on the road.
  • Miami has won 8 of the last 10 meetings between the Heat and Knicks.
  • New York has won three straight games on the road.
  • Since Jeremy Lin joined the rotation 11 games ago, the Knicks have gone 3-0 against teams win a winning record.
  • The Heat list nobody on their injury report.
  • The Knicks aren't as lucky. Josh Harrellson (wrist) is out, Iman Shumpert (knee) is doubtful and Bill Walker (elbow) is questionable.
  • Miami will be without center Mickell Gladness, whose 10-day contract expired on Tuesday night.

Tipoff from the AAA is set for 7pm. The game will be broadcast nationally on TNT.

Knicks are like a different team from before

They attack the rim more and not just Lin and shoot a lot less threes since Lin. They play better D—first time I’ve seen a MD team hold teams to this low an average total per game 12th at 94 points a game.

That being said, I hope the Heat play their style or their best style: defense first, rebound and fast break/attack the rim. Big 3 need to get in the post and go the rim/get to the line and Rio and co. Should have some good open looks—knock them down.

Cole and Toronto lineup was aggressive in the last game so more of the same. Beat the Knicks and then rest up. Have some fun in AS activities.

I do hope Melo gets in iso mode and offense gets stagnant as much as possible—you the man Melo!

*the better defense has been throughout the year (before Lin) and Chandler is a good defensive anchor.

Joel is gonna be the key cog on defense

Chandler, Joel’s man, is usually the one setting the on-ball screens for Lin, Joel’s gotta swarm Lin off the screen and trap him behind the arc. If we can do that, and Lin turns the ball over the way he has been, expect to see a bunch of highlight dunks for #3 and 6

Well, that's Joel's strong point...

he is quick and a very good athlete and gives great effort. I hope Joel is that “monkey in the wrench”, “fly in the ointment” die hard style and Snoop is busy posting highlight dunks off Knick TO’s

Trap worked very well for Dallas against Lin a lot of the time

It's gonna come down to late game execution

4th quarter:

Wade – Lin
Miller – Smith
LBJ – Melo
Haslem/Bosh – Amare
Bosh/Haslem – Chandler

2012 - Big 5
2017 - 5 Big rings

not really

its actually gonna come down to one thing i think, turnovers. Lin has been turnover prone thus far in his career, and miami is the best at feasting off of turnovers. Lin commits early turnovers and suddenly the knicks might panic and go back to old tricks, iso and ill advised jumpers…that could cost them.

This is gonna be great. Really want this to be another double-digit win for Heat (won’t mind an entertaining blowout). Gotta capitalize on the Linovers(as Mj puts it) and turn them into quick fastbreak points. And like Sparker, I’m eager to see what JR as well as Fields is going to do tonight.

Knicks still play no D.
Remember they shot close to 20 three pointers last game and still lost by 10 in the last meeting between the heat & knicks.
Let’s go heat!

HEY!

our defense is actually playing well. for as fast a pace we run..and being in dantonis offense. we are ranked 12th in points allowed. that’s pretty damn good when considering we used to be 28th.
