Heat outlast Hawks in triple overtime thriller

It took a while, but the Miami Heat came out of Atlanta with a big win, defeating the Hawks in triple overtime 116-109. The game was a challenge from the beginning for Miami, who was without LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, but big-time efforts from Chris Bosh, Mario Chalmers and even Terrel Harris gave the Heat the kind of team win that will be remembered in their dressing room for quite a while.

Without Wade and LeBron in the lineup, it was obvious that Chris Bosh was going to have to step up, and he did. Not only by putting up great numbers, but also hitting some very big shots throughout the 4th quarter and overtimes. Of course, none was bigger then his 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds left in regulation, which tied the game at 93 and gave the Heat second life. Bosh finished the game leading all scorers with 33 points, adding 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

Star-divide

Another bright spot for the Heat was rookie Terrel Harris, who got a ton of playing time with Wade and LeBron out and made the most of it. Harris played 44 minutes and finished the game tied with Chris Bosh for most rebounds with 14, 7 of which came on the offensive glass. He also scored 9 points and had 4 assists, and looks very comfortable and confident out there, which is great for a rookie.

The regulation periods of this game seemed like a story of runs. Miami started the first half on a 10-3 run, and they ended the first half on a 10-3 run, taking a 54-49 lead into the break. Miami had just 4 turnovers in the first half, but that changed in the 3rd quarter, which led to a big Hawks run that gave them the lead. The Heat turned the ball over 9 times in the 3rd, allowing Atlanta to go on a 16-1 run to end the period and take a 70-68 lead into the 4th.

GAME NOTES

  • Miami is now 7-1 for the first time in franchise history.
  • Along with his great stat line, Chris Bosh also was 4-of-4 from the foul line. He now has gone 21-for-22 from the charity stripe in his last 4 games.
  • Udonis Haslem picked up his first double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and adding 11 boards. He leads all bench players in the NBA with 10.1 rebounds per game.
  • Mario Chalmers had a huge game, which was magnified even more because Norris Cole struggled in this one. Rio scored 29 points, with 22 of them coming after the 3rd quarter. He also had just 4 turnovers in 49 minutes, which is awesome.
  • The Heat D certainly stiffened in the 3rd OT, holding the Hawks to no points on 0-for-7 shooting with 2 turnovers.
  • It was only the 10th time in NBA history that a team went scoreless in an overtime period.
  • Atlanta got to the foul line an impressive 46 times, but missed 15 of those free throws, including 7 in the 4th quarter. The Heat held them without a foul shot in the 3 overtimes.

Next up for Miami is a game against the New Jersey Nets up in Newark. A day off is just what the doctor ordered for the Heat, as hopefully they will have their two best players back in the lineup.

really impressed with Harris...

and like that we have some youthful guards to go along with Rio this year. In the second half, there was no inside presence for the Heat really until ot. Did not have Bosh posting up or Bosh did not get in the post—not his game, but last night, he needed to do more of it and he needs to do some of that in general and the Heat offense was dribble, dribble, dribble—bad shot or tough shot there for a while. Pitt played ok, he tried to post some, but it is not easy to get it to him down there.

Kudos to Bosh for hitting the big shots and making his free throws. So nice to have UD healthy and giving his usual toughness and production. Go Heat!

Reporter: What would you say a Greg Studrawa offense is like? Stud:

"Attack and be very physical…fly around…attacking, come after you and come after you and come after you…." Me: I love this answer.

Shaq Said It!

I think I heard Shaq finally admit that Bosh is part of the Big 3 last night.

Hmm

Hawks are overrated and they have the worst D in the league.
Point blank this game showed that the heat have a bench.
Harris is a stud and Pittman will only get better.
If Curry can come back and produce when he gets back, even more scary team!
Let’s go heat!

Go Heat

Good win for the Heat, it will boost up the confidence of the Miami bench; however, I think that thi
s only shows how weak Atlanta is in term of superstars and mental toughness.

What a game!

Wow Bosh. I give a lot of criticism to him and Rio but they dominated last night. Rio showed me a lot of maturity since last season and I think we all know why he is our starting pg.

After learning Bron and Wade were going to be out...

…if I told you this game would be close and Rio and Bosh would have outstanding nights and that some of the bench players would get some much-needed run in such a close game, I bet you’d say moral victory—win or lose. Guess what! We got a moral victory plus a literal W!

BTW what happened to Norris Cole last night? I only got to see the end of the 2nd OT and the 3rd OT, and I didn’t see him on the floor at all. Glad with the results of the game regardless, but I am curious.

Played Way too aggressive

Cole was trying to go 100 mph towards the basket end to end on every possession. He either missed the shot or turned the ball over . At one point it happened 3 straight possessions and that led to a 16-1 run by Atlanta.

who is our best rookie?

@ sherman Cole was trying to hard to push the tempo last night. Also and let me make this very clear, im not calling him or the team selfish. We have all seen a bench player come in on a selfish team and get a pass and ack like he wont get it back if he passes, well thats how Cole played last night. He took a couple of bad shots and was trying to force thing a little to much. I believe he will be alright. Harris with 14 rebounds WOW, that was great to see!

LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!

1) Awesome ass picture
2) Awesome ass win. It’s nice to know we’re 13-strong now and that we can win without Wade/James as the reigns of the offense. Also, I’m glad Harris got his time to shine. But it sucks that it had to take both Wade and James to miss again. And he’ll see little to zero minutes once Mike Miller comes back.
