Mavs Ride Into The Sunset; Heat Goes to Drawing Board

Well that hurt.  However, he we are.  So let's take a looksie here:

1-First off I would like to thank everyone from Peninsula is Mightier for allowing my posts here.  I know sometimes I go overboard, but that's what makes me me.  I am not about to change.  For all the people who RECed me and had good things to say thank you.  I appreciate it.  I think David does a great job here, and many of you that contribute give me good insight.  Being an "official" Heat fan for a year, I learned a lot.  Thank you.

2-To the Dallas Mavericks, congrats to you.  You guys played your asses off; not only in the finals, but the entire playoff run that you guys had was something to marvel at.  You came back against teams, forced overtimes, and beat the defending champs.  I can say it's nice to see guys like Nowitzki and Kidd get rings.  Now, the two of you can ride off in the sunset and let the Miami Heat drive the car.  But before we put the car in R and pull out of the lot, some things need to be addressed.

Star-divide

3-Lebron James needs therapy.  Bottom line.  When this guy is at the top of his game, there is no one better actively.  If Lebron played in the fourth, made free throws, did less facilitating, this series would be much different.  When it comes to the BIG moment, he folds like a tent.  He did it against San Antonio a few years ago, he did it this year.  I am not sorry he is on this team, nor am I sorry he is one my favorite players.  He needs to also come down a few levels and learn how to be a killer, not a bully, on the court.  He needs to learn "the Chicago way" as depicted in the Untouchables.  When someone uses a knife, you use a gun.  If they put one of yours in the hospital, you put one of theirs in the morgue.  I really think Lebron needs to focus on the game and not himself as a product for Nike and everyone else.  Once he does that, look out world.   He will be the terror that everyone here dreams about.  I think he needs to spend the offseason working on his game mentally, and taking inventory in whether he wants to be a name brand, or a kick ass basketball player.  We already have one icon in Miami who never won a title, we don't need another.

4-D-Wade is a class act.  He was the one who was hated less, and for good reason.  He came alive in these finals like no one else.  He just didn't have enough help.  We have seen what this team does when D-Wade and Lerbon are clicking.  They need to draw up that plan for next year.

5-Chris Bosh gets a bad rap.  The man wears his heart on his sleeve.  I have new respect for him after these playoffs.  He played his ass off, and gave maximum effort.  I wish he was more involved in the game, but unfortunately, everyone was taking off point because of the game plan that Dallas used.  It's a shame that people give this guy crap all the time, but I really do think Chris Bosh showed many people during the playoffs why he was a part of this equation.  He may have missed blocking Dirk's layup in game 2, but he did so much more positive throughout the series that people should have more respect for him.

6-Many players stepped up and the question is who will be back.  I really want UD and Miller back, as well as James Jones, Rio, and Anthony.  Everyone else is fair game for trading as far as I'm concerned.

7-And as for all the fans from other cities who hated on the Heat for months, hope you are all happy with the result.  While your teams were sitting at home, the Heat was in the Finals.  Sure they lost, but as far as New York, your ass didn't even get past the first round.  Chicago, your superstar couldn't close against the Heat.  Boston, you can get on the horse and follow Kidd to the sunset.  Cleveland, hell why even worry about Cleveland?  Your city is a fricking toilet.  Why the hell would Lebron want to spend another day in your garbage dump of a city is beyond me?  Dan Gilbert is an ass.  Period.  He had to make a tweet yesterday.  You failed to make moves for Lebron to stay.  Here is a comparison that's fair between Michael Jordan and Lebron James.  Michael Jordan had a management staff that would get players for him.  Michael Jordan's team's owner wasn't a douche bag (although some will argue with me on that), and Michael Jordan's fans in Chicago are good people (other than there bandwagon behavior the last two weeks and Cub fans, but hey what are you going to do?  Kidding.)

Final thought:  The thing that has bothered me this series is too much hatred.  It's OK to hate teams.  Everyone hates the Yankees, Red Wings, Lakers, Celtics, Steelers, Patriots, etc.  And mainly it's because they win.  Yes I know the Heat were cocky.  Yes I know the Heat had a celebration to announce the three players.  However, the real story should be how the Dallas Mavericks won the championship.  The way the post game was handled last night was a joke.  Too much time was spent on the fact the Heat lost, not the Mavericks win.  Even Rick Carlisle commented "enough with the Lebron reality show.  How about what these guys did?"  I think the Heat will learn a lot from this, and will come back stronger and wiser next year.  Lebron James will get his ring.  So will Chris Bosh.  They will do it.  Let's hope a deal can be reached between the NBA and the players and it doesn't break these guys up.

I jumped on, and I'm not getting off no matter what.  I am proud of what the Heat accomplished this year.  Not bad for a team just getting together with tons of new faces.  Imagine what they will do in the future.  The Heat will be back, find a center, make a decision about Spo, and be back next year.

Quote of the day-"At the end of the day, all the people that was rooting on me to fail, at the end of the day they have to wake up tomorrow and have the same life that they had before they woke up today.  They have the same personal problems they had today. I'm going to continue to live the way I want to live and continue to do the things that I want to do with me and my family and be happy with that."-Lebron James

Good series, Miami. It was an interesting series. I try to be objective, but the media over-attention on the Heat, your fans chanting and throwing things at Barkley, memories of Salvatore and co giving the trophy to Miami in 2006, general arrogance of the Big 2 made it very difficult.

You’re right on Lebron needing a shrink, but I’d go further. Heat should follow Mavs and hire a full-time sports psychologist. If someone like that can get their egos and confidence in balance, it will help on-court and in PR.

IMO, Heat should unloadeveryone outside of Big 2, Bosh, Haslem, Chalmers, and maybe Miller. If Riley keeps filling out the roster with the wrong veterans, this year’s playoffs could be fools gold. Maybe trade Bosh if you can get a couple solid contributors. Have to at least active defender/rebounders that’re at least 6’11". Fill out roster w young, cheap specialists that play D and know their role. Let that team develop together.

If I were in your shoes, my main concerns would be Lebron’s mental health and Wade’s health/age. He’s a great player and competitor, but the way he throws himself around, his body will break down Iverson-style. Possible in the next couple years.

Also, can Spoelstra diversify your offense, and teach Lebron (and to a lesser extent Wade) to be much more effective without the ball? His job next year will depend on it.

Good points

But I have to disagree about unloading Bosh. Yes you can get some pieces for him, but he is as important to this team as Lebron and D-Wade. He has shown the ability to pick up the slack when the two are off. He is a good outside shooter and rarely misses from the line.

But it could be a way to send a message to Lebron that he needs to step up and play

My point w Bosh was that the Heat may have to unload him to get what they need, not that they should blindly get rid of him. Flipping him for a low post banger, a great 3 pt threat and a late draft pick or two would be more complimentary than a 3rd best player that isn’t an ideal compliment to the two stars. I like Bosh, but it was always silly of the Heat to use all that $ on him instead of building a real roster.

Look at some of the other contracts during "the summer of Lebron"

Amare, Joe Johnson (WTF?!?$#), Boozer.

Bosh was going to get a big contract where ever he went. What’s scarier is that he would have made more going somewhere else.

I’m not saying it’s a bad contract. The price may actually be a benefit to the Heat when they move him. I’m saying that after spending a lot of their cap on Wade and Lebron, they would have been smarter to spread the rest of the money and talent throughout the 3-9 spots on the roster. With the new CBA’s impending smaller (probably hard) cap coming there may not be much of another option in a year or two.

Overall, the current roster looks like it was built by Lebron, not Pat Riley. I expect old slick to take control again soon. 2 established and effective role players alongside cheap, young specialists should replace past-their-prime do-nothings like Juwan, Dampier, Z, Bibby, etc. Then the younger group can improve while working with Wade and Lebron.

I got you

I don’t know if I can agree with the Lebron made the roster. Why do you say that?

The Lebron Cavs seemed to construct rosters mainly with guys Lebron wanted to play with. This ended up with a lack of long-term planning and past their prime guys that weren’t great fits. This Miami roster from Bosh down echoes that, in my opinion.
Riley’s smarter than to spend the rest of his cap on Bosh and then sign guys with nothing left like Bibby, Z, Dampier, Magliore, Juwan, etc. I think Lebron and Wade said that Miami could have the 3 of them or none of them. Riley’s choice was obvious, and I think he decided to let them do things their way this year and when they failed he’d have the leverage to approach the roster his way going forward.

Obviously, this is complete speculation. It all comes down to my thinking Pat Riley is smarter than that.

Interesting angle

I don’t think Riley would go along with that, but who knows?

Really?

In one breath you call Cleveland a Garbage Dump, and the next you complain that there is too much hatred?

First off Cleveland is a dump

Its not a matter of hatred, its a fact. Have you been there? I have, and I never want to go back. Number one.

Number two, I’m from Chicago not Miami. So get city right buddy.

You completely missed his point. Having a paragraph whining about how people from other cities resent the Heat, and following it up immediately with another one saying there is too much hate, is a bit disingenuous.

I am not here to hate on the Heat. I actually like Lebron James, and agree with almost everything you said in your post. However, you have to understand the reason why so many people dislike the Heat. It goes beyond being “jealous,” and goes even further than that ridiculous welcome party they threw (which you have to admit was a pretty dumb management decision … that wasn’t Lebron or Dwyane’s idea, that was Pat Riley’s). The reason so many people are irritated by Miami is the attitude you embody so perfectly in your post. On one hand you say there is too much hate, and with the other you are calling Cleveland a shit hole. That is the same attitude that Lebron and Dwyane had all season: they’d complain that everyone was rooting against them on one hand, while on the other hand seemingly going out of there way to antagonize everyone.

Like when they “mocked” Dirk Nowitzki. I don’t particularly care about what they said, but just the fact that they went out of their way to do it in front of the cameras with all the attention they get speaks. They are not stupid people, they revel in the inordinate media attention everything they do or say gets. All season they just did stuff like this that seemingly serves no purpose other than to get a rise out of people for the attention. And then a few days later they sullenly complain that everyone hates them. That is the reason so many people dislike the Heat.

Anyway, besides that, I agree with everything you said. And I am hoping that this year’s learning experience will help the Heat mature a bit and give them good championship runs in the future.

No I didn't miss his point, I was just jabbing.

I can be reasonable about anything unless it comes to Cleveland. I think its just a bad city, and they are taking this Lebron James hatred a little too personally. It’s a business. Gilbert didn’t work hard enough to keep his superstar, who can blame him for moving on? Sure the special was a little over the top and shitty, but blame ESPN and his marketing for that. He knows it was a mistake. I have always had animosity against Cleveland because of how the people at businesses in the area are, the way they treat a nice guy like Jim Thome when he comes up to the plate, Indian fans piss me off. I just dont like the place. I could be wrong, but the 3 times I have been out there, not fun times.

I understand the reasons, and they may deserve some of it. But the real story is the Dallas Mavericks are champs. Not the failure of the Miami Heat. The day of, instead of focusing all attention on the champs, ESPN (or ABC whatever) decided to focus energy on the struggles of Miami. That was unfair to the Mavericks, and the fans in Dallas. That was what my last point really was about.

I really like this post,

some really good viewpoints in here. And it’s great that your staying positive, Jae.

Message to the basketball world: We had no center, Miller and Haslem missed loads of time with injuries, and it’s just the first season, and yet we were super close to winning it all. If we can nab a center in Free Agency, stay healthy, and the Big 3 improve as teammates: Watch out.
