Heat falter late in 4th, head home in 3-2 hole
The early stages of this game were great from a Mavs perspective and not so much for the Heat. Dallas shot the ball well from the beginning of this one, and that will happen when you give a team some of the easy looks that they were getting. Miami stayed close though, despite a few more turnovers then you'd like. Mario Chalmers capped off a nice late 1st quarter run by hitting another halfcourt shot at the buzzer, putting Miami up by 1.
The Heat got a scare late in the 1st quarter though when Dwyane Wade went down after colliding with Brian Cardinal and went back to the locker room. He returned about 10 minutes or so later and the report was that he had a left hip contusion. That wouldn't keep him out of the game though, and Miami did a good job maintaining a lead for the majority of the 2nd quarter.
That changed late though as the Mavs went on a late 12-2 run to go from down by 6 to up by 4. A Mario Chalmers triple would give the Heat their first field goal in almost 4 minutes, and Miami went into the half down by 3. That was a bit remarkable considering Dallas shot 65.7% while the Heat hit 51.3% and turned the ball over 9 times.
The Mavs held the lead throughout the 3rd quarter, though Miami stayed close. Dallas just couldn't seem to miss from downtown, making 4-of-5 to start the quarter. It's quite demoralizing for a team to seemingly hit big shot after big shot regardless of how well you might be playing defense. This was certainly a game where the role players stepped up, and I guess the Mavs just got the best of Miami.
A 9-0 run by the Heat would help them capture their first lead of the 2nd half, and they were up by 4 with 4½ minutes left. They wouldn't score much from there on out though, as Dallas answered with a 17-4 run to close out the game, hitting some big time shots that put the game out of reach. Miami now heads home needing back-to-back wins if they want to knock off the Mavs and take the title.
GAME NOTES
- Miami has lost back-to-back games for the first time in the Playoffs.
- LeBron had a triple-double (17-10-10) but again disappeared in the 4th quarter, scoring just 2 points.
- While he only played 34 minutes, Dwyane Wade led the Heat with 23 points. He did most of his damage at the line, going 10-of-12.
- The Miami bench was great, scoring 45 points.
- Another 4 triples for Mario Chalmers, who finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
- Chris Bosh had a double double, scoring 19 and grabbing 10 boards.
- Each of the Big 3 had 4 turnovers apiece.
Miami now heads home to South Florida to try and grab a win in Game 6 and force a deciding 7th game. We've got a couple days to wait, as the next game doesn't come until Sunday night.

like I said,
Joe Crawford made the call that was the nail in the coffin for miami.
Was that
LeBron’s offensive foul on Chandler? Because to me that has to be the pivotal swing that opened the flood gates. The only way I could come to grips with it was home court advantage. Something we will have in Miami.
NBA Playbook examined that play
It’s a pretty thorough analysis:
Looks like it had to do with where James caught the ball, and how his positioning nullified the “outside the circle” restricted area rule.

Still think it could've gone either way
but the home court got the advantage. I still don’t think his feet were set before James got to his spot.
sucks to lose another close one but we're a pretty damn good team at home
if anyone can do this, its the heat.

Feel so deflated.
Sorry guys. I cannot see this team beating that team twice in a row. I really hope the heat win. I will cheer like he’ll for them. But Dallas is playing too well. Lebron can’t score in fourth. Everything sucks but lets get two in a row.

Hey Guys,
exciting and great game again tonight with both teams playing tough. It was a offensive game for sure. It goes back to Miami where its going to be a slugfest and I expect nothing but the best from the Heat. It should be great like this series has been so far. Good Luck Sunday.

Hey there...
Good win for the Mavs—shot lights out, but Heat were close despite that, another great game. Sunday will take things up a notch, do or die—looking forward to it;

Classy. No need for hate between fans IMO.
Mavs are heading to Wade’s house. Better be ready. Wade’s not going down that easily at home court. Mavs have been giving us their best basketball and they shouldn’t let up at all because the only way the Heat can truly win if they can 1up the Mavs. See ya’ll Sunday(there, Monday here).

Considering Dallas shot 56.5% overall and 68.4% 3-Ball.......
……it’s amazing that Miami even crawled back to a lead late in the 4th…
We didn’t get fully Laker’ed tonight. Mavs did get some open looks from their schemes but they are going to have to prove they can replicate that insane accuracy in an unfamiliar and unfriendly arena on Sunday. If they do that, I’ll be there to congratulate them.
However, win or lose the series, I want at least a Game 7.
Go HEAT.

Miami has to figure out how to get Lebron more involved, he’s being way too tentative. Deferring to Wade does not mean he has to be tentative. However, with the way the Mavs were shooting, I’m not sure it really mattered. They put on a offensive clinic: great shots and few turnovers.
http://theresastatforthat.blogspot.com/2011/06/dallas-miami-game-5-rare-offensive-show.html
Hope Wade can go and is ok...
I think the way the series is playing out, he and Bosh need to get the points (Wade for near 30)—-Bron needs to facilitate and board and pick his spots like he did tonight; have to cut down on those open looks and the Mavs will not likely shoot this well again. Get game 6, and the pressure swings back some on the Mavs.

LOL. Troll sighting.
Anyway, I still believe the Heat can win this. Of course. They’re my team. Hope D-Wade doesn’t get any post-game aching in his hip. I want a bird to crap on Card’s bald head so badly. We have got to get more production from the big three in the 4th. Not just on offense. We need to get stops. And we have got to stop following this ‘game of runs’ trend. If the Mavs end our run, then start a new one. Don’t let them get momentum from that one shot. Bench play has been superb though, and we’re gonna need that. Hope it carries on to the next two games. Heat have only lost at home ONCE in the playoffs and it was a pretty darn close game. I just don’t see Wade or any of the Heat giving up at home. There’s just no way they’re going out like this. Wade, keep scoring and do your all-around game. Same with LeBron. A great all-around game from both would destroy the Mavs. Bosh had a good double-double tonight. Let’s just let him to what he did best tonight. And the bench, Rio, UD and Mike. They were huge and I hope their performances can get them even hungrier to perform at a much higher intensity. It ain’t over ‘til the horn says so! LET’S GO HEAT!

That offensive foul by LeBron in the late 4th
was bullsh!t. Chandler was in the restricted. Period. LeBron should’ve been on the line instead of the Mavs getting the ball and ultimately momentum.
I was pissed by that as well.
I jumped when I thought they called it for an And1, but damn, I punched my pillow when they called the offensive. Now, there’s nothing we can do but play BETTER than the refs. Heat have home court for the next two games. If the refs make a call that is so bleeping wrong, they’d better get ready for a riot. The league has got to get better officials. Seriously.

Unfortunately... It was the proper call
I had the same discussion with a bulls fan during that series. There is an imaginary box that extends to the freethrow line. If you receive an entry pass inside this box, the defender does not have to be outside the restricted area to draw a charge. All the defender needs to do is establish position. Look it up. With that said, Chandler is getting way too many loose ball foul calls.
by Heatallica on Jun 10, 2011 8:47 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I think I've heard about that before.
But it was with Rio’s 3 at the buzzer in game 3 I think. I couldn’t quite understand that at first. But anyway, it sucked. We do get too many loose ball fouls. The foul on Bron was pivotal emotionally, but every other loose ball foul that gets called on us pretty much hurt just a much.

James and 3's
The Heat unfortunately have absolutely no chance to win if James keeps throwing up 3 point shots, absolutely none.
He is shooting less than 20% on 3’s.
If management doesn’t recognize it, they are partly to blame.
Play Chalmers more than Bibby.
Remember when D-Wade was the manager in 4th quarters?
I miss that, it was great for LeBron to step up against BOS and the Bulls but now get it to the man who really is the leader of this team, and will be the finals MVP after Miami wins game 7

But it’s not over. Go Heat, win game 6.
by Heatallica on Jun 10, 2011 8:42 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
The heat played well enough on offense to win! The problem
last night was the perimeter defense! Some of the Mavs 3pt shots were miracles, but several of them were wide open, uncontested shots.
The heat won the rebounding battle, points in the paint, 2nd chance pts and had more assists. 9 times out of 10 the heat win those games.
The Mavs shot 13-19 from the 3pt line. Terry, Kidd and Barea was 10-15 from there. That 3pt performance was an anomaly, a fluke.
If I were Spo, I wouldn’t change the offensive game plan going into game 6. Defensively, the Heat just need to tightening up the defense on the perimeter guys, stay at home on the 3pt shooter and not sag or cheat off of them.
There will be a game 7!
Lets go heat!
Watching since 1988
I have been watching most of the games since 1988 and this team is hard to watch.
My mistake, L. James is hard to watch.
I knew this was coming
We lost a real opportunity in game 2. The Mavs havent been shooting well in this series and i know that they would start to light it up at some point. We really shot ourselves in the foot not being able to close out game 2. We could be going home up 3-2 instead of down 3-2. The lack of perimeter defense is what killed us, not to mention their ungodly shooting. But we can do anything but go home and try to grind this out on our floor. We played their game last night and it hurt us. Cant do that anymore.
And i dont care that LeBron got a triple double. It dosent mean anything without a win. He needs to get his act together and put up some points in the 4th. Be assertive and take the ball to the rack.

Correction.
Just curious, has a flagrant offensive foul ever been called in the NBA?
Give credit to Dallas
As much as I hate to do it I have to give the Mavs credit for shooting lights out last night. It is a credit to our team that we were even in this game. If they shoot over 60% from 3 it will be very difficult to beat them. That being said, I don’t see that happening again, not in Miami. All we need to do is win game 6. Don’t even think ahead. Make it a one game series in Miami. I still like our chances then. Come on boys!!!! Can’t wait til Sunday….
by ModernWarfareCamper on Jun 10, 2011 10:06 AM EDT reply actions
Am the only one that thinks Mavs were due a shooting game like last night?
I thought it was going to be game 3, but Dallas has had a lights-out night in each series thus far. The 20 3pt bombs against Lakers come to mind.
The Heat need to stay focused inside the paint, and run at Chandler. No Haywood, and Mahini is a foul magnet. Push it inside like they did for that 12-15 minute stretch in the 2nd half, make Chandler play with fouls like in game 3.
The midget, and the headband will NOT shoot like they did last night again…68% from 3 is an anomaly…especially the riDIRKculous shot-clock beaters they put up.
Play Heat BBall…and win.
Bang on James all you want, but his triple double was the reason the Heat were within range all night.
Crawford’s call on James was awful…Mark Jackson said it best.

bq. This was certainly a game where the role players stepped up, and I guess the Mavs just got the best of Miami.
I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!
We can easily win games 6 & 7
1) Down 3-2 isn’t that bad especially considering that the Lakers were down 3-2 against Boston with the last 2 in LA. Heat could do this
2.) LeBron shouldn’t guard Jason Terry, Terry is quicker and Dwyane Wade, Miller, or Chalmers should guard Terry.
3.) Mario Chalmers should be in for the last 5 minutes of the game instead of Mike Miller, Chalmers is better defensively and allows Wade to switch off of Kidd and guard Terry. Also Chalmers has been the best three point shooter in this series.
4.) The point of this season, contrary to popular belief, was to show that the Heat team would work and just to shut a bunch of people up. They did that and while a finals trophy would be FREAKIN’ AWESOME. We’ve had a nice season.!

Everyone had high hopes for this season
But to be in the finals with three new starters?? Amazing. This has been an amazing season for El Heat and there is great things in store for this dynasty franchise. The game of basketball is truly like no other. At any time, anyone . No way will the Mavs shoot 70% from three in game 6, 7, or any game next season…. We played a solid game had few mistakes and still lost, but we still have a great chance of winning tomorrow (let’s not get ahead of ourselves talking about game seven) since we’ve only lost one home game this offseason.

My Lakers were down 3-2 going back to L.A. They crushed Boston in Game 6 and won Game 7! It can be done! Wade has to be focus for you guys. He is the MVP, the man. Lebron just has to play his game the first 3 quarters and then let Wade ATTACK AS THE CLOSER. Define the roles and play the roles. Any type of play or offensive set the Heat run in the 4th must have Wade in a position to score, especially in the painted area. Lebron should essentially play PG and defend. Simple. Good luck. I’m hoping for a Game 7 and an epic finish.

You are the most hyped, dissected, and criticized athlete on the planet.
Now with all the questions, will all the doubt and all the hate, you have the chance that kids dream of as they grow up. You’re down 3-2 in the NBA Finals. You have the world against you and the great thing is that you still have the chance to accomplish the single greatest athletic achievement of your life.
Your career won’t necessarily be defined by this series, but it may be. This may be your last Finals appearance. Look at Karl Malone and John Stockton, they got just two chances and they were both great. Malone being a league MVP.

is this a joke?
lebron on an off night is still better than 95% of the NBA when they are on. he is still an athletic freak who can lock down players on defense, rebound and ASSIST. yea he didnt score much in the 4th but he had a handful of assists. whenever he has the ball in his hands all the attention sways to him so he dishes it off to a likely wide open teammate. lebron has been very passive this series, yes, but hes still the best player in the NBA. you DO NOT bench him the last 5 minutes of a close game…

it's not working.
either sit him or come up with something entirely different. can’t keep doing the same thing. not with it all on the line. if they lose the series, will it all be because of Wade or James? it’s gotta be one of their fault. it’s all on him. just like it was Dirk’s fault the mavs lost in 2006. it’s what you do in the end that people remember.
I'm pulling for the Heat but...
….this series proves the point that when you have a 4th quarter leader, you’ve got to go for the kill, break your opponent’s neck. Double or triple your lead, don’t sit on it and hope. up by 15? Go for 30. Show the other team “We’re bigger, we’re faster, and we’re going to blow you out of this arena.” One collapse is all the other team needs to build their own confidence.
