Eastern Conference Finals Game 4: Chicago Bulls (1-2) vs. Miami Heat (2-1)

Even the fans look scared...

Finally, we only have to wait a day in between games.  After winning Game 3 at home on Sunday, the Miami Heat will put their hardhats on and get back to work tonight when they host the Chicago Bulls in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals.  I think we're really going to see what these teams are made of because this is such a ‘make or break' game.  A win for Bulls gets them back into the series but if they lose then they will have to win 3 straight against what will be the hottest team in the playoffs.

Before Game 3 Chicago hadn't lost consecutive games since early February, and they haven't dropped 3 in a row all year.  The Heat certainly don't care about that, taking it one game at a time, just trying to maintain the home-court advantage that they have earned for themselves by getting the split in Chicago.  The Bulls can still turn things right back around though, and they can do it the same way that Miami did by losing the first road game but coming back and winning the 2nd.

Star-divide

The main problem for the Bulls has been that they cant get any consistent scoring going while Miami has several offensive weapons that always combine to put up the points needed to win.  I'm fully expecting Derrick Rose to try and step up in this one, early and often.  The Heat has done a good job of controlling his touches and not only keeping him from scoring a lot but also limiting his assists, which is huge.

Overall Miami's defense in this series has been great, especially in the last two games.  They have held the Bulls to just 160 points in Game's 2 and 3, their lowest total in consecutive games this season.  It's very likely that the Heat are going to have to take Chicago's best shot because it will be desperation time for the Bulls.  They definitely don't want to go down 3 games to 1, but on the other end of that, Miami certainly doesn't want to hand the home court advantage and series momentum back to Chicago.

GAME NOTES

  • Miami is 7-0 at home during this years playoffs.
  • The winner of Game 3 in the Eastern Conference Finals has gone on to the NBA Finals for the last 5 years.  However, the last team to win Game 3 and not move on was the 2005 Miami Heat.
  • Derrick Rose has made just 15-of-42 from the field in his last two games.
  • Chris Bosh is shooting 67.4% while averaging 24.6 points and 7.3 boards in this series.
  • Both teams will look to get off to better starts then they did in Game 3.  The Heat shot 35.3% while Chicago shot 25.0% in the 1st quarter last game.
  • The Heat is still reporting no injuries.
  • Chicago center Omer Asik (ankle) is day-to-day.  If he can't play expect former Heat center/forward Kurt Thomas to get some minutes.

Tipoff from the AAA is set for 8:30 and the game will be broadcast on TNT, who decided to move their pre and post game show indoors after holding it in front of the arena for Game 3.

Game 4, the heart of a Champion's Game.

This is a game that will set the tone for the series from now.If Bulls win, we are in for a long series, if the Heat win, they will be eager to end the series soon, so that they can get some rest against the Western conference winners. This is a game to determine the heart of a champion. Who will it be?

Game 4 is a game the Bulls do not want to loose for many reasons. Paramount will be wanting to go back to their fans in Chicago with some kind of accomplishment, by possibly splitting the two games in Miami if they win tomorrow. If they split the Games in Miami, they will still remain heroes to their fans and get back their swagger. Which might mean a long series for both teams. The other reason being that the series is getting very personal for some Bulls’ players who vented their frustration last night with trash talks.Expect them to channel those frustration into hustle plays on the court tomorrow.

What does this mean for Game 4. I expect them to approach Game 4 with some desperation and urgency in both offense and defense. Expect Derrick to drive more to the rim. The Bulls played better in the 3rd qtr of Game 3 and will likely continue from there tomorrow. Most probably, they will approach Game 4 as a continuation of the 3rd qtr of Game 3 and use the same pieces they used in the 3rd qtr to start Game 4.
The Bulls did every thing I expected them to do in Game 3 but for two things.(1)They played Boozer more and (2) did not bring in Kurt Thomas who has both offensive and defensive mind set unlike other Bulls’ bench players who are either offense oriented or defense oriented but not both. I expect they will go to Boozer early in Game 4. Possibly introduce Kurt Thomas to the series in Game 4.

This is going to be a do or die mentality game for the Bulls.

For Miami, the concerns will be complacency and fatigue. They have really up-ed the tempo of their energy but can they sustain it. They have put a dent into the ego of the Bulls, can they put in the dagger? A win tomorrow for the Heat will be a great cushion for the Heat and shake the confidence of the coaching crew of the Bulls , which should affect the entire Bulls’ team heading back to Chicago. The Heat needs to see tomorrow’s game as the most important of all games played so far, though each had its significance.

The Bulls again dominated on the boards in Game 3 and had more shot attempts at the rim than the Heat.It will be worrisome if they start making those shots tomorrow. The Heat still have to do a better job at reducing second chance opportunities for the Bulls. The Bulls thrive on them and did throughout the regular season.

I do hope that D-Wade clicks tomorrow. We have not seen his brilliance at the rim this far.He has contributed significantly though to the defense like the rest of the Heat players.

Udonis Haslem presence has ignited the confidence of Miller and I see Miller hustling more and playing like someone who belongs to the team and has a stake in the team. He no longer plays out time as someone on loan from another club.I do hope that he also will start making shots. That will be frightening to the Bulls defense if he does in Game 4.

Bibby has stepped up and I hope he continues .Chalmers should continue to attack the rim when the opportunities present.

The Heat need to keep their composure tomorrow , keep their energy level up, limit turn-overs, good ball movement, good rotation in defense, cut and slash in offense, reduce second chance opportunites for the Bulls and continue to play Rose very tight (Rose will certainly force issues tomorrow, expect him to drive more to the rim) all of which the Heat did well in Game 3.

Let's Go HEAT!!!

Big game – I’m expecting a bounce back performance from DWade. It’s imperative for the Heat to continue to stifle Rose (2/6 in 4th qtr of last 2 games…). The Heat defense has been amazing the last 2 games

"Great effort springs naturally from great attitude" - Pat Riley
"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships" - Michael Jordan
"You show me one team, one GM, one person, one organization that wouldn't jump at the opportunity to take a Chris Bosh, a LeBron James, a Dwyane Wade together, and I'll show you a liar." - Dwyane Wade

A Must Win

Let’s go boys!!!! I really think whatever team wins tonight is going to win the series. We can’t give the Bulls hope and home court advantage back. No mercy!!! Look for D Wade to have a monster game tonight with Bron getting close to a triple double and CB and the rest of the guys contributing nicely. Heat rule!!!!

Where, oh where?

Yes. Where are all the Spoelstra haters now? It is not too early to take a step back and reflect on the job he has done all season long. The 9-8 start. The bump. Cry-gate. How many coaches could have survived this intense level of scrutiny? Unprecedented scrutiny. The one time I felt he had seriously erred (cry-gate) turned into an exercise in team-building. The guy has done a terrific job and regardless of whether or not the Heat win six more games this year (um, they will) Coach Spo has been great.

What has he accomplished, you say? He took a notorious coach-killer (Lebron) and won him over. James now completely buys into what Spo is selling. This is what great coaches do. The X’s and O’s are really for the assistants to fuss over. He has developed a system whereby two superstars (whose games are near mirror images of each other) can thrive. He has embraced advanced statistics in a way few other coaches in the NBA have and it has yielded results. He has weathered the most frenzied media attention any team in the NBA has ever faced – and done so with grace and a steadfast believe in himself, his players and “the process.” In short, the obstacles he and his staff have faced all year are unlike anything anyone has ever had to endure. It has been a pleasure to watch. And I hope Heat fans understand how special he truly is. In short, I believe Spoelstra is the future. As I have stated many times here on PIM, we are lucky to have him.

Now one can nitpick when he does or does not call a time out, the minutes given to the Big 3, the rotation, etc. These are all valid. But what is most germane is that we are six wins away from glory.

Go Heat.
