Haslem returns with big game as Heat even series with awesome defensive effort

Big 3? How about a Big 4...

The early stages of this game was just an extension of Game 1 with the Bulls shooting poorly but dominating the offensive glass.  Before the opening quarter was half over Chicago had already collected 7 offensive rebounds which led to 6 points and helped them overcome missing their first 9 shots, going from down by 5 to up by 1.  That prompted Jamaal Magloire coming into the game and he made a quick impact, but we've seen that before; we need something that makes a lasting impression.

Udonis Haslem came into the game late in the first quarter and within 60 seconds had already collected an offensive rebound and drawn a charge.  It wasn't enough to inspire his teammates as Chicago closed the first quarter on a 17-4 run to take a 7-point lead after the 1st quarter.  It wouldn't have been a big a deficit if not for a halfcourt shot that was made by Luol Deng at the buzzer.

Star-divide

Miami did a better job of keeping things close in the 2nd quarter thanks to some amazing quality minutes from Udonis Haslem, especially on the defensive end of the floor.  He showed us all what the Heat have been missing for the last 6 months, something that we will hopefully be getting for the duration of the playoffs.  When he was in the game Chicago had no offensive rebounds but had 9 when he was on the bench.

Miami hit 51.5% of their shots in the 1st half and held the Bulls to shooting just 37.8% but 9 turnovers by the Heat and 9 offensive boards by Chicago made a difference.  Still, the Heat came back from down by 7 after the 1st quarter to take a 48-46 lead into the halftime break.  You could tell that something clicked for Miami during the 2nd quarter and now we could only hope that they kept it going in the 2nd half.

A slow start in the 3rd quarter led to some suffocating defense by the Heat, and for the time being you could see the tides turning.  The Bulls matched Miami and kept things close but then late in the quarter the great D turned into a 10-0 run by Miami which included a pair of big stuffs by none other then Udonis, whose help defense and rotations were a thing of beauty.  The Heat were finally getting out in the open court with 12 fast break points in the quarter compared to just 10 in the 1st half.

Taking a 6-point lead into the 4th quarter, Miami was getting some very solid minutes from the players that they needed to step up, but it was yet to be seen if they would be able to close this one out.  The Bulls certainly made their case to take the game, going on a 17-6 run to tie the game halfway through the 4th.  Miami's offense was all Udonis Haslem; he had the Heat's last four field goals as no other Heat player had scored since Dwyane Wade's layup with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

More distressing is that Haslem had Miami's only 2 points of the 4th quarter and we were almost at the halfway point.  After a couple of blood-induced timeouts we finally got some scoring.  LeBron hit a triple and then after a nice defensive play by Mike Bibby on a driving Luol Deng, James hit another tough shot as the 24-second clock was about to expire to give the Heat a little 5-point advantage.  From that point on Miami's defense was just ridiculous.

The game was tied at 73 after a Taj Gibson dunk with 7:13 left in the game and from that point on it was all Heat.  They held Chicago to just 1-for-11 from the field through the end of the game and Miami outscored the Bulls 12-2 to take Game 2, tie the series and head back home to South Florida for Game 3 on Sunday night.  LeBron was LeClutch down the stretch, scoring 9 of his 29 points in the final 4:28 of the game.

GAME NOTES

  • Udonis Haslem played 23 minutes, scoring 13 points and grabbing 5 rebounds.  He was 3-of-3 from the charity stripe and played some amazing D.
  • After combining for 33 points in Game 1, D-Wade and LeBron James put up 53 in Game 2.
  • Wade had a big 1st half, scoring 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 5-of-6 from the foul line.  He finished with 24 points including 3 big free throws down the stretch.
  • A quiet night for Chris Bosh, scoring 10 and grabbing 8 boards but led the Heat with a +22 rating.
  • Mike Miller had 7 rebounds in 18 minutes.  I'll take it.
  • As a team the Heat out-rebounded Chicago 45-41.
  • The Bulls had 7 offensive rebounds in the 1st quarter and just 10 the rest of the game.
  • The Bulls started the game 0-for-9 and finished the game 1-for-11.  They shot 34.1% for the game and went just 3-of-20 from downtown.  They were also just 16-of-26 from the charity stripe.

Following the game Udonis Haslem and Miami owner Micky Arison shared a nice hug behind the Heat bench.  You know that this is a night that Udonis has been looking forward to for a long long time, and now he is finally back.  Game 3 from the AAA isn't until Sunday night so both teams have a few days to get ready for what should be a hell of a match.

HASLEM AKA SHOWTIME

Mann he was inspiring tonight. Guy was working hard and looking for the right players, playing smart and everything. Just great.

Haslem is more important than bosh

i thought so at the start of the season, and i know so now. When haslem cheked in i told my family, “i hope hes not 100% yet” i knew he would be a factor….he gives the heat something that they terribly lack.

Dont think you figured out the bulls though….

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

But seriously it is not that hard to figure out the bulls.

It’s just a matter of how you will execute that gameplan.

Theres a reason why UD is a team captain...

great effort tonight, if he plays like this, the heat shouldnt have any trouble disposing of the bulls.

Proud Heat fan in Dallas, Texas. Proudly Reppin D-Wade in the Dirty D since '03!!

Welldone Heat but it is far from over!

The Good….
The energy from the Heat was great. It matched the Bulls’.More of it Heat.We need some consistency.
Udoni Haslem was fabulous.
The big three did thier thing on the boards.
Bibby played Rose real tight.Kept Rose in front of him for the most part.Welldone, Bibby.
The Heat improved their chances of scoring and scored when they moved the ball around. They were not predictable, when they moved the ball around. Please, less of 1-on-1 ball offense, ditto the big 3, you become so predictable to the opponents defense.Save 1- on-1 ball offense for the last few seconds of any qtr.

The Bad……..
Coach Eric Spoe had some mental lapse in the 4th Qrter while his team was doing its best to keep up her energy level..His late time out when the Bulls went on a 17-6 run to tie the game 73-73 almost cost the Heat the game.He could have called the timeout earlier when the Bulls went on a 7-0 run or 11-4 run.Great Coaches never want to give their opponents the swing in momemtum. Why wait for a 17-6 run and have the Bulls erase 11 points deficit.I criticised Coach Eric for his habit of calling out timeouts rather too late during the regular season that I felt cost the Heat games . I have also praised him during the playoff, as he seems to have changed and called timely timeouts. His timeouts in the first 3 qtrs today were great but to allow a 17-6 run in the 4th qtr before calling a timeout when there were opportunities to do so earlier and stop the bleed was bizarre and caused some anxious moments. It was a gamble not worth repeating again.Nice that the Heat won.If the Lebron had not stepped up in the last minutes of the 4th qtrs, it would have been a sad game for the Heat.If the Heat had lost, that would have been why they lost IMAO.

The Heat cannot afford silly and very clumsy turnovers (many dribbles or bad passes) against a physical and mentally alert team like the Bulls. Those turnovers have to stop and now.

The Ugly………..
Who the heck was the ref with #9 shirt on? This was not a charity game. You could tell which way his call was going.Horrible!
I wish Reggie Miller as much as I liked his exploits with the Indiana Pacers (as a matter of fact I once lived in Muncie,IN), could be less biased and been a little bit more enthusiastic when the Heat make plays as he does when the Bulls do.Being a TV commentator we expect a fair and balanced comment from him. Some fans see the game through the commentaries.

Folks welldone for a game well played.Rest those legs and lungs tonite. You will need them on Sunday.Expect the Bulls to come out charging on Sunday.

Go Heat Go!

by Who donnit? on May 19, 2011 1:11 AM EDT reply actions

I hear ya loud and clear about the commentating

i dont know why it seems to bother me but the commentHATING on the Heat is very agging. Like you said, Reggie damn near jumps out his seat with enthusiasm when the Bulls make a good play and then Heat make a great play he’s quite “meh” about it. I dont live in the Miami area or even Florida so I know you guys have probably heard the negative comments ALLLL year. The good thing is winning shuts all that up. Go Heat!

by Ro Joseph on May 19, 2011 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

The commentary last night was a joke. Not only were they ridiculously excited whenever Chicago scored (“YES!!!!”) and showing no signs of joy at Miami, but they were actually picking at the refereeing. Bad calls went both ways (as is typical of the NBA), but they were constantly highlighting the ones that went against Chicago (including ones which were actually correct calls anyway), and ignoring the ones against us.

This shouldn’t bother me, because I’m used to the bias against us, but as Whodonnit? points out, some fans watch the game through the commentary so the “Heat get all the calls” nonsense is forming their opinions for them and contributing to the nationwide hatred of us.

Steve Kerr

was also on chicago’s side. the only unbiased commentator, IMO, was the third one. couldn’t name him sorry.

UD U R the man!!! What a nice win

That 2 dunks….oh my, he’s back with insanity.

Something to prove II

by flash3 on May 19, 2011 9:33 AM EDT reply actions

uggh Good Game Heatles

This is what I was worried about with UD. The refs were awful for both sides.( It seems like they were awful for the Bulls then awful for the Heat)

Hopefully Korver finds his three ball and we take one in Miami

by houstonbull on May 19, 2011 9:51 AM EDT reply actions

That's exactly what we needed.

Going down 2-0 against a quality team like Chicago would have been very bad. We needed a win, if only to prove that we could actually beat the Bulls. The same way the final regular season meeting with Boston provided the Heatles with enough confidence to take them in five.

UD was heroic. He is the heartbeat of this team.

Notice how if we beat the Bulls and meet Dallas in the finals our path to another NBA title would have gone through teams we went 1-8 against in the regular season (Boston, Chicago, Dallas.) This was never going to be easy, but that’s crazy.

Mario Chalmers looks lost out there. I know Bibby isn’t doing much either but he at least he can run the offense a little.

Hold serve at the AAA and put the pressure on Chicago!!!

1+3+6=how many rings???

Heat played a great game last night...

But lets not go overboard with the “big 4” picture caption. You have to play a consistent, standout season to be called #4. For example, a solid point guard such as Rajon Rondo that plays consistently throughout a season, yet is often forgotten as #4. But yeah, Haslem shows signs of life after such a long recovery period, as he should…

by LizzakeShizzow on May 19, 2011 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

I hate Charles Bark-ley!

He called Heat’s 3 a “whinny bunch” but He is the one who won’t shut up about the Heat! He criticizes the Heat even when good things were happening. I don’t want to see him here in Miami on sunday.

by wadeNsee on May 19, 2011 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

.....

Charles kind of right and wrong at the same time. If you want to know the most bias announcers, they are Jeff Van Gundy(goes with Miami all the time) and Magic (Lakers all the time). They even talk about Kobe/Lebron in OKC games!

Suns fan here...

I’m also a huge Heat fan. Everyone out here in Arizona is a hater, but I’ve been rooting for your squad all year.

So I imagine this has already been discussed here, but I was curious about your thoughts on why the Heat never run the pick’n’roll with Wade and Lebron. Wade running point and Lebron at the PF spot. It seems obvious to me that it would be unstoppable but it seems like Spoelstra is holding it back. What do you guys think?

Let the fools have their tartar sauce!

by Funky Flapsack on May 20, 2011 2:01 AM EDT reply actions

Shhhhhhhh. We run it a bit but not that much. I guess Spo just doesn’t want to abuse the Wade/James tandem.

Why shouldn't the Heat celebrate? They just made it to the ECF by winning a game show quiz.
