Game One Statement: Miami 99 Boston 90

                           I_medium

Dwyane Wade played arguably his worst four games of the 2010-2011 season against the Boston Celtics. In game one of the Eastern Conference semifinals, he more than erased those painful memories. Wade scored 38 points in the Heat's 99-90 victory. In the four previous meetings this season, Wade averaged 13 points and 5 turnovers a game on 28% shooting, by far his worst numbers against any team. This afternoon, however, he was ready. After the game Wade said, "I wanted to come out today and be a leader." Leading by example is the most effective form and as if to make that point, Wade came out onto the AAA floor a full three hours before gametime to work on his shot. (He went 14 for 21 from the field.)

The game was physical throughout with double technicals, flagrant fouls and one ejection (Paul Pierce.) Involved in two of those episodes was Miami sharp shooter, James Jones. Besides getting into it with Jermaine O'Neal and Paul Pierce, Jones went off for 25 points. He was 5 of 7 from beyond the arc and a perfect 10 for 10 from the charity stripe. Lebron James had another all-around solid effort, scoring 22 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Star-divide

Boston was playing tough in the first quarter as both teams (besides Wade) were cold. With almost a week's lay-off, it may have been expected from the Celtics. Miami had trouble coming out strong against the Sixers in the first round, so their slow start was no surprise either. Add to that the fact that Boston and Miami are two of the league's best defensive teams and you had the recipe for a slugfest. A Mario Chalmers lay-up at the end of the first quarter (his only field goal of the game) definitely seemed to energize the crowd and the Heat carried that intensity into the second quarter.

Early in the 2nd Boston point guard, Rajon Rondo, was called for his third foul and from that point on never really got it going. Although he ended with a respectable 7 boards and 7 assists, he only mustered 8 points. Kevin Garnett was even less of a factor, scoring 6 points. Ray Allen led the Celtics with 25 and Pierce chipped in 19 before getting thrown out after a double technical was called when he and Wade collided on the Pierce screen.

Chris Bosh had a quiet night scoring with only seven points, but his twelve rebounds helped Miami stay even with Boston in that category. Mike Miller made an eight minute appearance, going scoreless, but had 3 boards and 3 assists. Not to be discounted, though, was his energy and a very good plus/minus.

Boston was without Shaq and Miami was without Udonis Haslem, but both could play in this series. Shaq will likely be back for game two Tuesday and Haslem, who hasn't played since November could also be available. How this would shake up the rotation is anyone's guess (as is just how effective he could be after such a long lay off. But we shall see.)

Miami is now 4-0 on its home floor in these playoffs while today's loss was Boston's first.

The play of the game, in my mind, was Dwyane Wade waiving off Coach Spoelstra's pleas for a time out just before half time, motioning his teammates to clear out and then banking in a tough shot over Ray Allen to give the Heat a 15 lead at the break. Although Boston played well early in the third and had a nice little run late in the fourth, it really felt like Miami had the game in hand from that moment on.

This was a good test for the Heat, who are 11 victories away from winning in all. Having now beaten their arch rivals twice in a row, Miami's confidence level has to be very high. As Wade stated after the game, that there is no quit in the Celtics, we all know how good Boston is. They are the defending Eastern Conference champions. When the Big 3 were constructed it was almost a given that for Miami to achieve its ultimate goal, Boston would be their main competition. No offense to what Coach of the Year Tommy T. has done in Chicago, the road to the NBA title most definitely goes right down the middle of Bean Town.

Game two is Tuesday night at the AAA. If Miami brings the same kind of effort it displayed in game one, Boston will head back home a very desperate (read: dangerous) team. Thankfully, with three straight losses to this team earlier in the year, the Celtics have Miami's complete attention.

Thrilled to have Haslem...

Hate that Shaq will be like a sideways turd clogging the lane for the Celtics

Bron and Bosh need to be more aggressive in game 2

But I have no doubt they will be – they played well other than scoring as their presence allowed DWade and JJ to thrive

by Seraph042 on May 1, 2011 10:23 PM EDT reply actions

My points to win were shown:
Wade to score 20+=he had 38
Bron to score 20+=he had 22
Bosh to dominate the baords=he had 11rbs
Bench production=Jones with 25points(5/7 from threes)
Bosh must average a double double next game though.
Wade was killin em.
Let’s go heat!

.Heat Tri-nasty is inevitable!

Wade!

What a game. I have always been of the opinion that Dwyane Wade is the best basketball player in the world. Game one proved why.

Once again, Joel Anthony was great. Can he be dominant against the Big Diesel?

1+3+6=how many rings???

i think with shaq and joel playing

the Heat can be dominant as a team like usual. Joel and the team D will make shaq move up and down the court faster than he wants, if they play shaq he will be dominated. shaq vs big z is there only hope

LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!
Joel Anthony is the man

keep leading the way DWade!

excellent write-up …I wonder what our record is this year when DWade has a high scoring, highly efficient game? We seem unbeatable when this happens. We also seem unstoppable when Bosh has a huge night. LeBron had a VERY good game as well, i loved his and Wade’s defensive intensity.

Man if you give Ray Allen a smidge of room he is going to get his shot off! Does anyone think Shaq will be relevant? I think he’s mere presence will be a factor. Lets keep it going PIM!

Excellent team defense from the Heat for the most part...

Bosh did not help in the paint scoring wise but he did get 12 boards and James had on overall good night; Wade in a zone is always fun to watch—was in a zone of defense a lot of the time also. I found it interesting when Mark Jackson was going over some plays at the half of how the C’s were focusing on keeping Bron out of the paint—he would dribble forward and draw attention from three to four players and Wade would cut and get to the rim, that was cool. Supporting casts will need to continue to step and hit wide-open shots—way to go JJ!!! One game in the rear-view

Go Heat! game two, bring the D effort again, beat the C’s again.

Conditioning.

The Heat should expect the refs to turn blind eyes in game 2 to please the Celtics. The Heat should play hard but smart.

I cannot believe I feel asleep with 30+ seconds left in the game -.-

This was a good game and a great start to the series. We got big help from our bench in JJ and Wade was an absolute monster. I’m a bit concerned about the wide open threes they were giving up. But I’m sure the Heat will be capable of tuning down Boston in the next couple of games. Even though Bosh wasn’t playing well offensively, neither did Garnett. They did cancel each other out offensively and that’s something good. Also is that Bosh dominated Garnett on the boards. They also did a good job of getting Rondo to have 2 fouls early. That would be key since he’s the only positional mismatch. If the Heat can keep shutting down Rondo, they have this series in the bag. Shutting down the opponents PG should also help them when we face the Bulls in the ECF. GO HEAT!

OH! Those are really cool! (OH! Those are really cool!)

YO GUYS

I LOVE PiM. I was sooooo pumped for that win yesterday. Bones just spanking Celtics haha. And Peirce’s ejection (warrented or not) really set the tone for the series. The Heat aren’t gonna be pushed around the by the AURA that surrounds boston.

D-Wade

As awesome as D-Wade was last night, that’s how bad Bosh was. Only 7 points on 3-10 shooting is not gong to cut it on this team. Fortunately, Jones stepped up with this three-point shooting, but he won’t be able to do that every game. D-Wade and LeBron need some consistent help if the Heat are gonna win this series. Thanks, but I hope you give congrats three more times,

This is going to be a tough series—may the best team win. Good luck but not too much; go Heat.

I just wish I could have heard exactly what was said...

it didn’t look like he said anything profane or went crazy or anything, but SportsCenter said he directed profanity at Wade.

You have to admit

If that rule was enforced every time someone “directed profanity” at another player, half the court would be ejected. I mean, the C’s probably would have lost anyway, but the job of the refs is so that fans don’t have to sit around and think about stuff like this.

by JT11 on May 2, 2011 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

well if your gonna shout it into the ref's ear like Pierce did

then you’re gonna get T’ed up.

Good point, he was right next to the official when he said stuff.

If he said it from farther away from the Refs then they wouldn’t have heard or wouldn’t have reacted. I do admit profanity is thrown around alot, and that is probably shouldnt have earned the boot for Pierce, but he surely wasn’t smart about it.

Pierce should of not got ejected plain and simple

At the same time Pierce can’t react like that but knowing him, he’s gonna go nuts next game hope we can contain him
