Joel Anthony - most valuable big man?
Okay, let's start with the opinion, that Heat doesn't really have a big man. I don't know how you feel about it, but I certainly agree with that. I mean, ELTON BRAND scoring a double-double in this series. You got to be kidding me.
We need a solid defender and rebounder under the boards. We have got Big Z, Damp, Joel Anthony and forgotten Jamaal Magloire.
Dampier is currently injured. He has problems with his knees. Soreness kept him out of the court in this series.
Big Z. Let's not talk about his defense, becouse I usualy don't talk about somethink that doesn't exist. Really.
Jamaal is a solid big man but only for 3-4 minutes per game. Unfortunately. In his last game he has scored 8 points and rebounded 19 balls. 19 balls. In 30 minutes. For real.
And the last one is... Joel Anthony. He is doing really well in this series. I mean, seriously, have you heard the Heat fans screaming "MVP" to Joel in game 2? If you haven't you'd better watch it.
Anthony has lost his minutes after Erick Dampier's signing. But I believe he is a great player.
He was born in 1982, so he's pretty old - 29. But age is not everything.
I bet you heard about Gary Neal. 27 years old. But he's a rookie. It was pretty similiar with Anthony, who has spent his whole career with Heat. His career is not very long though. He is playing his 4th year as a professional player. So he started as a 25 years old man. The best time for a player.
He's rookie year was weird. He played only in 24 games. But this season is his breakout season. He's averaging most minutes since rookie year. He's rebound average is worse only by .4 than his career-high stat in this category. He's shooting his career high 54% from the field. He's also the best blocker in our team.
But Anthony does many things that, aren't in the boxscore. He's doing "the little things" that matters, and can get your team a win. Just look at his defense in this series. He is finally playing, what we expect from him. He doesn't score many points, but he's important factor of this team.
Let's take a look at his stats in this year's play-offs. 3.25 ppg, 3 rpg and 1.25 bpg. Not impressive. But his defensive work really is impressive. And it's interesting when you look at his minutes.
Game 1-26 minutes. Game 2 -27 minutes. Game 3 -29 minutes. And finally: game 4 -34 minutes. It keeps on growing. Same as his +/- stat. +7, +15, +15 and +18 from our last four games. It shows what he does to this team. He delivers spark drom the bench, doing good job at the defensive end of the floor. He just need a chance.
I told you earlier that he's not an offensive player. He's shooting 3-14 from the field in this series but 7-10 from the line.
Everybody keeps on talking about upcoming off-season and maybe signing Tyson Chandler, or Marc Gasol. But we have forgotten, that we may have a diamond near us. And this rough diamond is Joel Anthony.
I'm sorry, if there are any gramatic mistakes.

I love Joel Anthony!
That being said, he is a liability on the offensive end of the floor. Defenders can cheat and the Heat end up playing 4 on 5. This is a problem. If you can leave a big unguarded in the paint to provide help on a slashing D Wade or LBJ, this limits the options that penetration normally brings about.
1+3+6=how many rings???
Right on.
Great defense, great hustle, solid rebounding, but offensively challenged. but he needs to keep playing these heavy minutes be/c illgauskas is so bad right now in every facet of the game and Magloire and Dampier are just big space-eaters.

What Joel does never ends up in the box scores....
he is in the perfect position right now. As a starter, he would not be very good. But his energy and shotblocking off the bench is huge. He is the type of guy who plays very will in limited minutes, so that is another plus to him coming off the bench. He is a liability on offense, however we play much better when he is on the floor (both on offense and defense). His outstanding D leads to easy offense (transition buckets for Wade and Lebron). So while he isn’t finishing plays by scoring, he still has an impact on offense. It just isnt as apparant because it does not show up on the box score.
Looking toward the future, Joel needs to be paired with another big man (with size and strength). Tyson and Gasol are very good options (as is DeAndre Jordan), but they will all get too much money. IMO, our best opition is Samuel Dalembert. He is a very good rebounder, defender, and shotblocker. That is all we need in the paint. Plus, I read somewhere that he said the Heat will be at the top of his list this offseason. Pairing him with Joel would solidify the center position for the future as they are both 29 (not young, but not really old either). Also, do not forget that Pittman is still on the team…

Also, and this sounds crazy...
Greg Oden is a posibility. It is very unlikely, but still an option. Remember he is still just 23 years old. When healthy, he averaged 11 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks in just 24 minutes per game. Because of those injuries, he could be had very cheap. Not saying I am 100% behind this, but it is an intriguing option.

I agree
with you #1Heatfan. Greg Oden is an option, and he is very young. I would really like to see him in this team, and I guess he wants the same :D
We have nobody else so I voted "good how it is right now".
Joel plays hard defense and rebounds very well, but let’s not forget that he is offensively challenged. He had only 4 points and ZERO FG ATTEMPTS in 39 minutes last game (and 5 rebs isn’t amazing). And that is not uncommon. We have no other option now so we will stick with Anthony, and Spo won’t ever be afraid to play Joel 40 mins.

You guys bitching about Joel’s offense must be ridiculously spoiled or something. We have a team with lebron james dwyane wade and chris bosh. a defensive specialist at center is a perfect fit, and joel does amazingly well. he has also improved offensively in each of the last 3 years so stop complaining and appreciate what we have. obviously pat riley knew what he was doing when he signed anthony to the long term contract, but i guess you guys know better then him because joel is offensively challenged.

I depends on who the Heat are playing...
without Shaq in there, then play Joel a lot because he did really well against KG and I think he can handle JO. Joel is being a lot more aggressive when getting the ball and he did hit his ft’s under pressure (form is good) so I hope he continues to take shots. Damp and Big Z have size and length which is important against Big traditional centers/forwards like Shaq, and the Lakers’ bigs. Good for the Heat to be able to match up against different situations.

JOEL
ok he got 5 reb but how many does he tip out to other players? maybe 3 or 4 a game. how important is it to find the other teams best rebounder and box him out so his teamates can get the board, he does that all the time!does anyone else notice Lebrons confidence goes up after a joel screen because he knows its going to be a solid screen. he might not get the block all the time but he makes the other team miss atleast 5 shots a game. ive been talking about joel since Before the season even started and was ridiculed for it, now i finally get to say I TOLD YALL SO!!! with that being said i do believe he should come off the bench but still play 25 to 30 min a game. but if we pick up another big how will the min be distributed with bosh, haslem, joel and another big.
LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!
Joel Anthony is the man
