Heat linked to both Mike Bibby and Troy Murphy

Mike Bibby shoots over his brother-in-law, Heat swingman Eddie House.

Hey guys...sorry for the lack of posting lately.  I haven't been feeling so hot, but the show must go on.  In the wake of the Heat's home loss to the Knicks on Sunday, there could be some light at the end of the tunnel.  Former Hawks point guard Mike Bibby and former Pacers power forward Troy Murphy were both bought out of their respective contracts are could be free to sign with other teams.

Bibby would absolutely be an upgrade offensively at the point, both in making plays and shooting ability.  The problem is that he wouldn't do much to improve the defensive side of things, which has some people thinking the Heat should be hesitant and not spend the money, even though it would just be the veterans minimum.

Star-divide

I'm under the belief that it will improve the team, and we can afford it, then why not?  Another thing about Bibby is that he is a proven leader, which could be a good thing for the Heat.  They certainly have some talented players, but they sometimes appear to take back seats to one another.  Maybe having someone out there taking control would help things.

Troy Murphy could step right in and be useful for the Heat, filling the void left by Udonis Haslem's injury.  If Udonis comes back, he is still a good 4-6 weeks away from being his usual, productive self.   If the Heat wants to spend the money on Murphy then by all means, bring him in.  It would also be a good idea to nab Murphy if for no other reason then to keep him off of the Boston Celtics roster.

We'll find out in the next day or two where these guys are going to end up, but reports are that the Heat is front-runners for both.  If they do end up signing in Miami, there would have to be a couple of roster cuts to make room.  Odds are that Jamaal Magloire and Carlos Arroyo would be the ones to leave, though there is a chance that Juwan Howard could be let go of.  Howard shares an agent with Bibby though, which is why it seems he gets a better chance to stay.

Bibby could give back what Miami loss

I was really disapointed and stunned by the importance of guys like Billups – Mr Big Shoot just killed the Heat. On the other side I ask myself: whats up with DWade? In nearly every big game, he struggles – is it because of James, who maybe gives him to much pressure, because of his attitudes of winning those games? For me it feels like a curse… but Bibby really could help out – because he’s a true veteran point guard with a lot of playoff experience, give you 5-6 assist and is able to hit those big shots and would give the team the much needed confidence, who they lost in these crucial last games against Chigaco and NY. The only problem with Bibby: his defense, but if you need the D you go with Rio otherwise with Bibby – sorry Carlos, but their is no room for you anymore…

about Troy Murphy: no need for him but he is a good rebounder, made 10 boards per game in Indiana – With him, the Heat have another guy like Big Z, who is also a better defender because he is faster and 5 years younger. I would waive Jamal Magloire, if he signs with the heat.

No question about it sign both

There’s no way on earth Bibby and Murphy can do less than Arroyo and Big Cat..

Yeah, it certainly can't hurt at this point--Big Cat has hardly even played...

and Carlos hardly plays as compared to the beginning of the season and is not a very good defender.

Two Celtics have the same agent as Murphy

West and Wafer.

So hurry up and wait…

Bibby should be signed for his experience. He isn’t great by any means, but can be a poor man’s Billups.

Bibby for Vets minimum...

good deal, too good to pass up. I wonder, how much would we have to pay Murphy? I dont know much about what happens to the contracts when this type of thing happens.

I gots to put the team on my back, doo.

Bibby will be in a Heat uniform.

But the same cannot be said of Murphy. He will, in all likelihood, be a Boston Celtic. That is unfortunate. I believe he could really help the Heat. The absence of Udonis Haslem has hurt the team greatly. Who is our back up power forward right now? Juwan Howard? Not good.

Would the addition of Mike Bibby make the Heat a better team? Yes!!! Mario Chalmers has been terrible. I may go so far as saying Arroyo was a better floor general. Time to end the Chalmers experiment. He is not, and never will be, Rajon Rondo.

Getting both Murphy and Bibby would be the best scenario. We shall see.

1+3+6=how many rings???

by Dollar Man on Mar 1, 2011 11:21 AM EST reply actions

the question becomes

do they chase ring success or do they go after the money?the heat can only offer the vets minimum to any of those players, but their are teams out there that under the cap that can offer a million or more. Especially with a new CBA looming it will be interested to see how this plays out.

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

Both would have been nice

If nothing else, they might have disrupted the Heat’s use of non-conventional line-ups that hasn’t delivered when it mattered most. I’d rather see a 10-man rotation by position than a shortening of the bench that means disarray on D & TOs on the offensive end.

The Heat can use any help they can get Bibby is a upgrade at point and Murphy is a upgrade over most of the big men we have

by Bbett on Mar 1, 2011 2:10 PM EST reply actions

Hopefully Bibby will be a solid role player

I know people like to rag on Chalmers but he has been very good the last few weeks and is also young w/ upside and is a decent defender.

Bibby on the other hand is a vet who’s D is questionable at best but Tom Haberstroh made a post that, apparently, the Hawks this season are better defensively with Bibby than without (an interesting point) so who knows

He just needs to make shots

go to the hawks sbn site

Peach Tree Hoops and there is a pretty good rebuttal (or blatant tear down) of Haberstroh’s article

If he can make some shots as you say...

It will be worth getting him with no other non big 3 player making shots consistently especially in big games. I hope his experience will help the offensive flow out when he is in there and his D is something like Carlos’s I would think who hardly even plays of late—at worse, it’s a wash if the Heat get him and let Carlos go. I hope he comes.

Idk about chalmers having an upside. Players with upside are guys who every team wishes they had. There isn’t a team in the league calling the heat asking for Rio. If only Riley traded beasley for jonny flynn instead of a 2nd round pick we wouldn’t need a pg right now.

by ChristianW on Mar 1, 2011 4:28 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I agree with Mario being a decent pg right now, but I’m not so sure Flynn would be any better. I know the Twolves are very bad but he is not exactly lighting it up over there and a good pg should make a team a little better.

Heat are happy with Rio

Bibbys importance is only offensive – minded. An experienced vet point guard like Billups, Nash, Kidd or Fisher make the right decisions in critical late game stretches – Rio on the other side is one of the best defenders on that position. If the offense is rolling, Rio will be on the floor most of the time – otherwise Bibby has the ball… Both make the team better – in different ways. Hope that the Heat get NY in the playoffs – Bibby against Billups should be fun to watch as well as the other match ups ;) A new rivalry was born – I see it in Spoes eyes^^

Flynn was one of the top rookies last year. You put chalmers on the twolves and he wouldn’t even get playing time. They got like 3 pg’s better than him. I give chalmers 2 more years playing with this team and then he’ll be released.

by ChristianW on Mar 1, 2011 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

Flynn was injured and had surgery in July and since he got back in games this year, has not played like he did.

In 32 games he has averaged 18 minutes, scored 5 points and 3 assists; even in his rookie year he only averaged 4 assists per game and John Wall is averaging 9 on a bad team—not trying to put him down, I’m just not so sure he is not just an average point guard at the moment.

Chalmers should have been trdaded

Chalmers was one of the reasons why the Heat lost to the Knicks on Sunday. As a PG, he should have conficence in every player. Against the Knicks, Chalmers was predictable. If it was not Dwayne or Lebron, Chalmers would hold on the ball until either was open before he wil pass the ball. Several times Bosh or another Heat player was open and inches away from Chalmers, but Chalmers would not pass the ball.It was so noticeable that all the knicks had to do was lock down Lebron or Dwayne in the 4th quarter.Chalmers should trust his other players and move the ball to them so that the Heat offense will be free flowing and not a two legged offence that is static of Dwayne or Lebron. If not, he should be traded next. Arroyo was good, bad decision to have let him go.Maybe because he is not a good defender as Chalmers that is why he was traded.I hope that the Heat will not regret that move.

by Who donnit? on Mar 1, 2011 10:43 PM EST reply actions

If we traded him...

who do you think we could have signed to replace him? He costs almost no money. Chalmers is inconsisent, but a very good player for the price he is payed.
