Pat Riley speaks out, openly upset with Heat haters
For the last two months I've been preaching about how everybody is going to hate on the Heat and to be prepared for it. With Chris Bosh and LeBron James coming to Miami, along with the rest of this amazing lineup, its an open invitation for everyone out there who feels the need for their voice to be heard to bitch and moan about the Heat. I'm willing to bet everything I've got that none of them would say a word of James and Bosh had chosen to play for their team.
Obviously I'm in no position to tell anybody what to do, just merely making suggestions that I hope you consider. It's something that I've been getting ready for, and I'm banking on the idea to let them hate because in the end, we have all the cards. We have the lineup of all-stars who left money on the table to play together and work towards the common goal.
For those of who feel like the negativity may get the best of you, don't worry. Even the best of us can let things get under their skin and lash out, and as of today that includes Pat Riley. He spoke to the press today during a 42-minute conference call and when asked about some of the NBA ‘professionals' who had choice comments about the Heat's off-season acquisitions, he didn't mince words.
I'll start with his comments directed to Orlando Magic GM Otis Smith, who opened his mouth about LeBron and his choice to come to Miami less then a day after the decision took place. He said that he thought James was "more of a competitor"; that "the great ones" can win on their own and "usually stay in one location".
That wasn't all he said, and for the full account of his anti-Heat blabbing you can read about it here. As for what Riley said about it...
"When Otis Smith made a point about LeBron's competitiveness because he didn't stay in Cleveland, I thought it was an absolutely stupid remark. He never made any kind of comment like that when he signed Rashard Lewis and brought him down from Seattle to a $128 million contract"
After reading what Smith said back in July, Riley really held back in my opinion. But the fact that he said anything at all shows how irritated the comments made him. The other guy on Riley's rant list was Charles Barkley, who over the past year cant seem to resist opening his giant mouth and say negative things about the Heat.
Barkley went so far as to refer to Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James as punks. Said Chuck:
"I thought that (James') little one-hour special was a punk move. I thought them dancing around on the stage was a punk move, and I thought he should've stayed in Cleveland."
That was after LeBron's tweet that he was keeping track of all the people who were taking negatively about him. It was Barkley's admitted intention to be added to that list, which is where these comments were derived from. LeBron's ‘decision' may have been a douche move, but one action doesn't stack up against the countless ways that Barkley has upset and offended people by running his mouth over the past couple decades. Here is what Riley said in response to Chuck:
"Charles Barkley, to me, went way over the top. Way, way, way over the top. For some reason (the media) and the network he works for has given this guy literary license to say whatever he wants, whenever he wants to say it. I think Charles is the only guy in the league who can get away with what he gets away with...and we all let him get away with it again. I can guarantee a couple of guys don't like that, being called that. LeBron isn't that. Dwyane is surely not that, and neither is Chris."
I think it's a combination of Riley defending his players and just being really fed up with people open criticizing and trash-talking about his players. It's beyond unprofessional, and it's something that you will never hear come out of Miami. We're all well aware of how classy of an organization they run down here and Riley speaking out shows just how upset he must be.
For him to speak out instead of taking the high road shows that he felt the need to defend himself and his players. Here are the rest of his comments that I thought were relevant:
"I think all these people should get a life. I really do. Most of it has been silly, absolutely silly. But I understand. We live in a different world now. I can't even relate to it. I take a little bit of umbrage to some of the things that came from people in our game that all of a sudden have become the moral conscious or moral authority on the decision every team or some individual might make."
"There have been a number of things written all summer long about the three guys we signed. But in the end, they're the ones, all three of them, that showed a world-class personality. They took the hit, and now, they're ready to compete. They've been mentally tough with all these kind of things."

So the Lakers no longer own the title of the most hated team in the NBA?
I don’t know if I should be pleased or pissed.

Lakers have been dethroned in Cleveland's eyes...
… but thats not too much of a surprise, now is it? XD
Don't be afraid to fight for your rights!
LOL nope.
Still, Cleveland has been the most unlucky city in sports. Can’t help but feel sorry for them.

Pat also said that Butler will not be back until midseason. But he "hinted" that he may be signed regardless (read it on Realgm.com)
Another comment that he made was that Wade and Lebron could be used at the point. We already knew that, but it shows that the organization sees it as an option and have thought about it.
The rest of the league can bring it...
We are in a better situation than most fans entertained was possible before free agency – as fans we can enjoy watching our team and forget about the “haters”. Especially when Pat has our back :)

Who the hell was Otis smith to talk shit?
His sorry ass franchise has never won shit, and until now always been bottom dwellers.
Heh.
Let haters keep on hating. They’re just mad.
I’m just waiting for the highly anticipated 2010-2011 season to start so we can settle the debate.

“I thought that (James’) little one-hour special was a punk move. I thought them dancing around on the stage was a punk move, and I thought he should’ve stayed in Cleveland.”
And I think Charles Barkley should have stayed in Philly instead of chasing rings in Phoenix and Houston.
And I love how we’re more hated than the Lakers despite having a payroll $20 million lower. We’re not like the Yankees, we’re more like the Padres or Rays, building a contender on a budget.
Builiding a contender on a budget? Chasing rings?
Puh-leeze.
What do you think is going on with YOUR team?
Believe me, if Chicago or NYC could have worked out a better deal (i.e. gutting their team for cap space and essentially becoming a 1st round playoff doormat for the last 6 years in the hopes they’d hit the “greed lottery”) you’d be crying like a bunch of little girls just like the fans in Cleveland & NYC are doing.
Your team and it’s owners didn’t do anything more than sucker fans into paying their hard earned money for a team that had no hope of winning for the last 6 years for a chance at a “Hail Mary” play.
And the truth is, nobody “hates” you. Your team hasn’t done anything to warrant any hate besides getting the Golden Ticket. Any team would have caught the flak you’re team’s getting if it had been them.
See, you have to earn respect to be hated. When you have a winning tradition and have crushed the dreams of many a lesser team and it’s fans like the Lakers, Yankees & Patriots you’re hated.
Your team instead is being clowned because most people think it’s not going to work because beyond the Big 3 there isn’t enough there to carry the team. And the fact that 1 of your 3 has shown the intestinal fortitute and maturity of Francis Buxton (Pee Wee’s Big Adventure) just adds to the ridicule.
Here’s your reality check, andre…
The two guys who came here in the offseason should have stood in Cleveland & Toronto and not come to Miami to “chase rings”.
News flash… Your team ain’t building anything “on a budget”. You maxed out for 3 guys and that’s why all you got after that were the guys Riles found playing 3 on 3 pick-up out on the courts on South Beach. Go talk to the Grizzlies and T-Wolves when you talk about budget.
And the Lakers will always be more hated than you because they’re WINNERS.
You know what everyone else actually HATES? Big-mouthed fans whose team sucked for 6 years, hit the proverbial lottery and are now coming out of their holes to bark because they think they’ve got something going and yet their team still HASN’T DONE SQUAT.
Well… there’s the bell. Class dismissed.

Jumping to conclusions?
I’ve read the whole thing, twice before I posted. Just to make sure my eyes were not deceiving me. I could disprove what you typed up one by one. Umm….yeah lets begin.
Your team and it’s owners didn’t do anything more than sucker fans into paying their hard earned money for a team that had no hope of winning for the last 6 years for a chance at a "Hail Mary" play
No hope of winning? Umm…they did bring players to the team that made us a damn good title title contender. We did go to the Eastern Conference Finals back to back years right? Within those “last 6 years.” Oh yeah it must’ve slipped my mind, they did win the NBA Championship within those years aswell.
And the truth is, nobody "hates" you. Your team hasn’t done anything to warrant any hate besides getting the Golden Ticket.
The word “nobody” refutes that claim for obvious reasons. Golden Ticket to another Eastern Conference Finals, uh huh.
See, you have to earn respect to be hated.
Not necessarily yet again for obvious reasons.
Clowned…er hated. Because we do have well…like you said the Big 3. In their own minds it disrupts the balance of power. Oh and by the way, I have yet to see LeBron James and Chris Bosh do anything immature since signing with the Miami Heat.
The two guys who came here in the offseason should have stood in Cleveland & Toronto and not come to Miami to "chase rings"
You’re a bright kid, ain’t ya? Why would you stay somewhere knowing you will not get the highly coveted NBA Championship. LeBron James, his last seven years with Cleveland got him where? At most, a NBA Finals Apperance only to get swept by the Spurs. Chris Bosh?…Lets not get started with him.
News flash… Your team ain’t building anything "on a budget". You maxed out for 3 guys and that’s why all you got after that were the guys Riles found playing 3 on 3 pick-up out on the courts on South Beach. Go talk to the Grizzlies and T-Wolves when you talk about budget.

I'm going to attempt to rebut your horribly written and spaced writing. Here we go....
Since the ‘05 – ’06 season when your team sold it’s soul (and it’s fans) to buy a title, your team has been a no-hoper that’s been nothing more than a 1st round step-stool for the Bulls and the Celtics. And bear in mind I’m not even mentioning that first round loss to the ATLANTA HAWKS (?!) and that pathetic 15 win season. That’s Fact.
It’s true. Nobody hates the Miami Heat. You haven’t been relevant enough in this league for anyone to hate you. Your team is a punchline. Just like any team that would have ended up with the “Big 3” would have been a punchline and gotten clowned. There’s no special hate for you. You’d be writing all about the NY Knicks or Chicago Bulls “Big 3” and what a little bitch DWade is if things had worked out any differently. Sorry to burst your bubble, junior but your team isn’t really worth anyone’s “Hate”. It’s just circumstance. That’s Fact.
Here’s where you’re showing your lack of comprehension skills. The comment I made about LeBron & Bosh going to Miami was a direct answer to andre316 who commented……. “And I think Charles Barkley should have stayed in Philly instead of chasing rings in Phoenix and Houston.”……… because he said he thought LeBron should have stayed in Cleveland. How does someone not come off as embarrassingly hypocritical when he jabs Barkley for leaving his original team to chase a ring when his favorite team is the team who just ended up with two free agents who are “chasing rings”? Not too bright, right? THAT’S FACT.
And as far as all the other stuff…. I think that the best you could muster was a dopey “Lol” which tells me how obviously right I am.
Wow! It’s easy to write a rubuttal when the person you’re writing in response to doesn’t have much of a leg to stand on.
Anything else you need me to explain? Like how the stars stay hanging in the sky like that?

Stop while you're [not] ahead.
I’ll start with the “dopey” lol comment, since it’ll be quick and short. I should’ve typed it all out for you, but hey you’re well…you. I refuted your main point of the last 3 paragraphs so a full typed out reply imo was not needed.
I guess you can’t stomp out the back to back Eastern Conference Finals appearance and nba championship. But yeah since then we’ve been on the underachieving side. Departures really took a toll on us. But hey at that time the Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls were a damn good team. But yeah where are they now? Celtics come on? 5 on 1 and we still took it to 5 games.
Read over your third paragraph.
So yeah, we had our ups and downs. I guess you’re just grasping at what has happened to the Miami Heat since winning the NBA Championship back in ‘06. And for that: http://www.peninsulaismightier.com/2010/7/12/1564809/heat-history-for-the-new-fans

Have you ever heard the term "talking in circles"? Because that's what you're doing.
If you understood the concept of a team selling it’s soul to win a championship, you’d understand what happened with your team. It was litterally only through an incredible (and improbable) once-in-a-lifetime situation of having so many superstar players come to free agency all at once that your team’s fortunes changed or otherwise you’d be stuck with your one star and another season of no hope at a champioship and 1st round playoff stomping for the next decade.
Your ownership was content to play it’s fanbase for suckers and put out an inferior product season after season because they could always point to the “1 Championship” and all of the sheep would smile and say “Baaaaah!”
Thank the gods, friend, because this wasn’t the team’s doing. He was already taking your money because fans were dumb enough to keep giving it season after season for a bad product.

First of all before I start the dissecting I loved "1 Championship" and all of the sheep would smile and say "Baaaaah!" Used it before but it wasn’t sports related.
Yeah I see where you’re poking at. Pat Riley becoming team president/coach and trying to win a championship for the Miami Heat asap. After that championship it seemed as if the Heat went on a downhill spiral. Dwyane Wade and Oneal sustaining injuries, key players departures. The team just couldn’t have looked any uglier. Years elapsed. And wham! A “once-in-a-lifetime situation” occurred. Well that’s where you’re wrong. It’s not that hard to call up a friend and tell him your intentions of “possibly” meeting up together to play on the seam team.
If it was another team that landed Wade,James, and Bosh we would be hollering at the top of our voices calling Wade this and that. But hey it was us and we’re satisfied and what has happened after what we have been through.
Why you mad?

The players set this up – but there’s no way this could have happened without the Heat positioning themselves appropriately financially.

Hilarious – as if the post-signing party with the unintentional prediction of ZERO titles for the Heat by LeBron (not 1, not 2,,,,not 7), with the dancing that INDEED WAS “punk”, and the “I’m changing my signature, so buy my stuff” was “mature”
by nba is the worst on Sep 11, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
I agree that the party was overboard (It was a lot of fun though), but disagree with the signature thing
Lebron is clearly changing his whole image. New team, new number, new signature. Companies had to change his products anyway because he changed teams, so changing the sig was no big deal.
Also, about the party, the players didn’t arrange the party, management did to get everyone excited. The players were there so they had fun with it. I really don’t think it was so wrong. If you were getting paid (a lot) to play with 2 other very good friends on a very good (potentially) team, my guess is that you would be excited about it as well
I didn't say it was "so wrong"...
But this article is about Riley defending against criticism – specifically Barkley’s use of the word “punk”.
Championship teams are serious – basically the opposite mindset of getting excited based solely on potential – and taking it to the ridiculous extremes exemplified by the reference to multiple championships (coming from a guy who never has won a game in the finals).
Obviously there’s a difference between “having fun” and giving your competition motivation to prove you wrong, with the quotes from the party…

The Knicks tried to gut their team, but failed. But you're right about Chicago, they didn't have to gut their team to become first round doormats. They just were that bad.
In those “6 years” your talking about the Heat went to the Eastern Con Finals and won the Finals. So, they were clearly first round doormats. Also, since there are only about 6 legit Finals contenders each year, by your logic, every other owner “didn’t do anything more than sucker fans into paying their hard earned money for a team that had no hope of winning”. Thats BS, Mickey Arison runs a first class organization. Plus, that “hail mary” play looks pretty good from where i’m sitting.
And what are you talking about? Nobody hates us? Have you been under a rock for the last few months?
I seem to remember a few years ago people saying that Boston’s Big 3 wouldn’t work. I think the Celtics are pretty happy about the turnout. People were making the same arguements: weak at the point and at center. So, to all those who are “clowning us” because we haven’t done anything, we will see who has the last laugh.
The Lakers are only winners because Shaq went “ring chasing”. If Shaq never came to town, Kobe would only have two rings assuming everything else went accordingly. And I think it is retarted to use the term “ring chaser”. Do we not want are athletes to care about winning? A group of players should not be critized because they took a one in a lifetime opportunity. And just because Themanthemyththelegend thinks Lebron and Bosh should have stayed doesn’t mean shit. They earned the right to be free agents and they took advantage of it.

If players are arranging something while they are under contract to another team, that is illegal. Sure, it probably happens all the time and there is no way to prove it, but it’s still against the rules. I think that the bigger concern would be Nick Arison’s access to the trio through Team USA activites a few years back when he would have surely been acting in an unofficial capacity as a representative of the Heat. I would say it is a legit concern, although we all know Stern wants no part of a “scandal” investigation after the laughable way the Donaghy situation was handled. It’d be an absolute PR nightmare for the league to do anything other than smile and say “We’re excited for the upcoming season”

Even Stern said there was no way to stop players from talking to eachother. Players talk about this sort of thing all the time. It just happened to come true this time

IMO Riley's defensiveness merely shows that the "Truth Hurts"!
“Charles Barkley, to me, went way over the top. Way, way, way over the top. For some reason (the media) and the network he works for has given this guy literary license to say whatever he wants, whenever he wants to say it. I think Charles is the only guy in the league who can get away with what he gets away with…and we all let him get away with it again.”
Barkley hasn’t been “in the league” for 10 years – and no matter the success the post-signing rally was with the Heat’s ticket sales/fanbase, there’s no question that acting like multiple titles are a foregone conclusion and the BS dancing can be accurately termed “punk” – and since no one knows yet how things will play out, also served to generate “hate” from the other 29 teams.
And as far as showing “world-class personality” – if by that Pat meant “huge egos” , then I guess that’s accurate…

Charles Barkley
may or may not have been right about everything. But, please be careful not to let a drunk, DUI commiting, gambling addict be the moral compass in any situation.

Riley is wrong here as none of the takes from Barkley or Smith were about the Heat, but rather on Lebron’s decision. And I agree with Barkley, two can’t captain a boat and I was also dissapointed to see Lebron take the easy way out. Even picking Chicago would have been more interesting. It is better for Heats now if stays as Wade’s boat. If it becomes Lebron’s, then his departure from Miami will be sooner. And again, this has nothing to do with the Heat nor with how many titles they win. Riley, you should get a life.
This hating needs to stop
other teams had the opportunity to get these guys, including Wade, they couldn’t get the job done and the Heat reaped the benefits. Instead of being hated on, Riley should be getting praised for, not only getting Bosh and LBJ and resigning Wade, but for getting the role players that he did. There are very few organizations, if any, classier than the Miami Heat in the NBA, maybe in all of professional sports. But of course he will never get that praise, maybe in 20-30 yrs when all these guys are old and retired, and people finally come to their senses.
