Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem: The core of the Miami Heat
As we all know, LeBron James got a lot of negative attention for switching teams after playing in Cleveland for the first 7 years of his career. Some were mad for the way he did it, some were mad for him taking so long to make his decision and some were just mad that he left.
Crazy as it seems though, he wasn't the only guy to leave a team after playing there for a while. Several guys did it, but since LeBron is best around and he did it in such a glorified way....lets just say that I don't think all the negativity is undeserved. Regardless, he is a grown man and knew what he was doing and I have to assume was well aware of how people were going to react.
Forgive me for not getting to my point quicker. LeBron's tenure in Cleveland got me thinking about what players had been with their teams the longest. Believe it or not, there are six guys in the NBA on six different teams who have played for those teams for over 10 years.
At the top of the list is Kobe Bryant who has played with the Lakers for all 14 years of his career. Then its Tim Duncan (13 years in San Antonio), Paul Pierce (12 years in Boston), Dirk Nowitzki (12 years in Dallas), Jeff Foster (11 years in Indiana) and Michael Redd (10 years in Milwaukee). I also have to give credit to the Spurs for keeping their core for so long. Along with Duncan, Tony Parker has been there for 9 years and Manu Ginobili has been there for 8.
To me, its very important for a team that wants to be good year in and year out to have a consistent and talented core. The Heat have that core and their roots run deep. Both Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem have been with the Heat for all 7 years of their careers and both are going to be here for several years to come.
It's no coincidence that those men are the captains of the Heat. They have been with the team through good times, great times and really bad times. From an NBA championship in 2006 to a 15-win season in 2008. They've seen all-stars come and go and been coached by three very different and very good coaches.
That core of those two talented leaders is key for this team because of all the new faces. There is an automatic respect that goes to them because even though the new guys haven't played with them, they know from being in the NBA what D-Wade and Udonis have done for this team on and off the court.
It also helps that Dwyane let Bosh and James know how much he looked up to Udonis before they came down here, and both of them acknowledged that U-D was very much a leader of this team. The other new star on this team is Mike Miller and he has been very close friends with Udonis since their days together at the University of Florida, so he is also well aware of what Haslem means to this team.
Granted, Wade and Haslem are the only two guys with a long Heat history but this is a team that is going to grow together. LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Zydrunas Ilgauskas all come to Miami having played their entire careers with one team. Joel Anthony and Mario Chalmers have only played for the Heat during their short careers. And then there's Eddie House, Juwan Howard and even James Jones who are all just looking to contribute and do whatever they are asked to in order to compete for that elusive NBA title.
Starting in a few weeks, these guys will all play together on the same team for the first time. But thanks to the awesome Pat Riley, there is going to be a strong core that will be playing together for many years to come. Wade, Bosh, LeBron, Udonis, Mike Miller and Joel Anthony are all signed for 5-6 years.
The blueprint is there for not just a championship team, but a dynasty. They laid the foundation with superstars, they surrounded them with complimentary talent and finished it off with veteran savvy. All the main components are signed on for several years, and the other roster spots will be filled with fresh role players whenever necessary.
It all comes back to D-Wade and Udonis though. They have been here the longest and earned the respect of not just their current teammates but players throughout the league. I'm sure that over the next few seasons the core of the Heat will get stronger but considering how many new faces are here, it's a perfect situation for the Heat to have a couple of established leaders already in place.
I'll leave you with this final thought. Kobe Bryant has been with the Lakers for 14 years and won 5 NBA Championships. Dwyane Wade's contract has him playing for the Heat for at least 13 years (he's played 7, 6 to go) and he has 1 NBA Championship. When D-Wade gets to that 13th year, will he have as many titles as Kobe?

So no news on Haslem's legal situation yet?
I did see that Delonte West signed with the Celtics…

Nothing new
Last I heard one of the passengers said the weed was his so all Haslem would have on him are the tickets for speeding and tints.

Ive said this before
I really hope that Bosh and Lebron are not named team captions. That honor should be reserved for Wade and UD. They are the heart of this team.
Agreed
No reason to think Wade and Haslem won’t continue to be the teams co-captains.

Joel Anthony is the man

Lebron finished out his contract and played hard all the time he was...
in Cleveland. Leaves as a free agent to a better situation—in an unselfish move leaving money on the table. This is the reality and the only poeple who should be upset should be Cleveland fans because they lost a great player. He is an equal to Wade in my eyes and should be treated as such and treating him any other way is disrespect to him—just like Wade, he has earned the respect from his peers also (the whole NBA). “When D-Wade gets to that 13th year, will he have as many titles as Kobe?” is a good question, but please ask the question also, When LBJ gets to that 13th year, will he have as many titles as Kobe? This is not an MJ/Pippen situation IMO and is a Shaq/Kobe situation—Lebron is coming over but this would be no different if Wade was coming over to Cleveland IMO.
Yeah - he really played hard in games 4 and 5 vs the Celtics...
Hogwash!
Any money that he left on the table will be refunded over the life of his contract due to the tax advantages on his total earnings due to no state tax.
LeBron has done nothing to earn respect of true basketball fans- quite the opposite, actually…

He did have an elbow injury--whatever and you reduce his whole career to two fucking games,
and the Celtics—is this your team—were the better team; as for the money, if that is true, big fucking deal anyway, he still dropped his ego knowing full well he would have to take a boat load of shit from haters like yourself and made the right choice to come to a better situation in regard to winning championships after finishing his contract out. I think he has earned the respect of the players on the floor and many fans (who are you to say who is a true fan or not, you show no allegiance to a team/player/anything). The same Cleveland fans who do hate him today (the only people that should) would love him and say nothing but good things about him if he had stayed.
Yes. Miami is a better situation. However, you can’t deny that there is significant evidence that this may have been meditated and been a decision he made a while ago. If that was the case, its entirely possible that he threw the series. If the cavs DO win the series against the celtics, how can he truly use the excuse that he couldn’t win. That would have been the third time in 4 years he made the conference Finals…If he wins there, thats 3 conference finals and 2 NBA finals in 4 seasons. There is no way he could leave cleveland and not get the ire of not only every NBA fan, but the owners and the comissioner.
There is also evidence in the series that he was milking it. Remember the free-throw that started it all? He shot the first one right handed and then decided to shoot the second one left handed. He definitely didn’t hurt his arm on the first free throw so why would he shoot it right handed then left handed? the most logical conclusion would be to make people THINK he was actually hurt. However, the fundamental flaw in this is that if he WAS hurt, he wouldn’t have been able to shoot the first free throw (and I believe he also made it).
There is enough evidence, that with an investigation, we could find out that he actually DID throw the games. If he did throw the series, how is he any better than the Black Sox…and they aren’t allowed in the HOF. Yes, they bet on baseball, but they threw the game for MONETARY reasons, and if lebron threw the game to come to Miami, even if it was for a championship, MONETARY reasons (i.e. the income tax) would have been a large factor.

He looked injured to me,
and I did find this, "James was re-examined Wednesday night by team doctors, who took more X-rays and an MRI exam that revealed the strain and a bruised bone near the elbow. James was not wearing a padded sleeve over the elbow at practice Thursday, but acknowledged it was more of a film session and walkthrough rather than a physical practice. He did sit out one portion of contact drills.
“The best thing about it is there’s no structural damage,‘’ James said. "The docs have given me clearance that I can’t hurt it worse and I can go out and play. Maybe it’s a strain in the muscle or the tendon.’’ From, http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/LeBron-James-MRI-reveals-elbow-strain-bone-bruise-still-expected-to-play-042910 I guess the Cleveland teams doctor were in on it—LOL.
What you are saying is pure speculation based on no factual evidence—just your observations. It seems you just do not like the guy and what you are doing here is a hater move for sure. If he (Lebron) is hated because of how he left Cleveland—a free agent who I think played hard while he was in Cleveland (as you said they did make it to the ECF three times and NBA finals during his time there; maybe Boston was just the better team.) so it was not just the regular season to be an a better situation—like Kobe is hated by a lot of people because he is arrogant, aloof, and just an overall asshole IMO, then I don’t get.
His career HAS been stellar
In regular season success. But that’s all.
IMO his “decision” to play without his usual effort after game 3 with a 2-1 series lead on the #1 seeded, overwheming title favorites is unforgivable.
The 2-time MVP only needed to lead his team to 10 HOME wins for a title – and with him on the court, the Cavs had the best home record in the league by far for 2 straight seasons…
by nba is the worst on Sep 2, 2010 9:57 AM EDT reply actions
that's right, hater...
…two-time MVP, best record in the NBA 2 straight years. Yeah, that guy must really suck. he’s awful. can’t play, no heart, etc. It’s amazing how these fat old men who have never played a sport in their lives sit around and complain about athletes and how they don’t perform up to their expectations. If you hate the NBA, don’t watch it. Don’t write about it. Just forget about it as we forget about you (like two seconds from now.) Lebron doesn’t care that you find his effort in the playoffs unforgivable. If he had had better players around him (see Kobe Bryant) a bad game here or there could have been overcome. Maybe he was injured more than you know. Maybe he just didn’t cry and complain about it like you, no doubt, would with a hang nail! What a joke.
1+3+6=how many rings???
Or maybe the delonte rumor was true
I see you didn’t refute the FACT that he played without his normal effort those games (3 consecutive bad games is NOT “a bad game here or there”).
And the only reason for the expectations was from seeing his normal effort.
The “better players around him” BS is just an excuse.
by nba is the worst on Sep 2, 2010 11:29 AM EDT reply actions
I found it quite telling...
…the way Lebron ripped his jersey off after game six. It was obvious he was done. Done with the 2009-2010 season. Done with Cleveland. Hey, maybe the Delonte thing’s for real. Either way, he did not seem to be himself. That being said, the talent around him is as important as the talent was around MJ (Pippen, Grant, Rodman) Magic (Kareem, Worthy, Scott) or Bird (Parish, McHale, DJ.) Hardly a BS explanation for Lebron not having won a ring yet. Take away Pippen and MJ does not win a ring. Take away Kareem and Magic couldn’t do it. Would Bird have won without McHale and Parish? Hell no!!! The manner in which the Heat made this happen (by themselves and not with the tacit help of owners and/or the league office) has angered many. Get over it, people. This is the future. Players taking a direct hand in their career direction. Whatever. Lebron is the best player in the NBA and he will prove himself now that he has hand-picked his supporting cast. Even in the post-season. Trust that.
1+3+6=how many rings???
But the talent WAS good enough
As the B2B 60-win seasons best record in the league proved.
It’s so funny how that changed to “he didn’t have championship-level help” (only) AFTER he tanked the series.
And to act like the heat didn’t know about the players trying to sign together is ludicrous – if you believe it was just a coincidence that the Heat had the space to sign all 3 under the rules without knowing/planning ahead, you are naive…

Lebron
2nd place all-time for consecutive 20-point games to start a playoff career with 19……
I can see where you would call him “regular season success. But that’s all.”
Get over it
whether or not he stop playing high level basketball like he normally does bcuz of the west and mom rumors, or bcuz of the great defense the celtics had on him( this is the reason IMO) or he just quit doesn’t matter. he’s a 2 time MVP at 25 yrs old. YES he was wrong for how he made his “DECISION”, BUT HE WAS A FREE AGENT. He could/can go where ever he feels gives him the best chance to achieve what ALL SPORTS PLAYERS JUDGED BY: CHAMPIONSHIPS. so its been 2 months now and he is with my HEAT NOW and he is gonna help us win titles.
Hmm
Wade should have 3 or more championships in his 13th season in the league.
Miami Thrice is incredible....Heat Tri-nasty is inevitable!
They will win a championship or two...
Of course after kobe retires with a few more, lol.
But it seams like this trio may have started a movement in the NBA where the super stars are gonna want to play with eachother (get your mind out of the gutter). So although this “mighty” trio might enjoy a few seasons of success, im curious to see what will happen when all the other stars team up.
"They call me the Muffin Man"
This is different...
…because there are only three truly elite players in the league right now (Durant is getting really close though.) Kobe, Lebron and Wade are sooooo much better than any one else that teaming two of those three up is HUGE! The NBA is a league based on concentration of unique talent. All the great teams in history had that more than any other feature. More than tough defense or team passing, etc. It has always been (barring injury) the team with the highest talent level that wins the title. Therefore, unless KD makes the jump into the elite and teams up with Kobe (not happening) this Heat team should be very, very dominant.
1+3+6=how many rings???
I would think Melo is pretty damn good.
The past 2 seasons he has gotten better. His offense was always there he has post moves and a sweet jumper (lebron knows that, lol). His D has gotten way better. I would put him up there with those 3 as well.
I do agree that they will be very dominant (although being a laker fan i hope they aren’t). But at the same time i feel that while we have kobe still able to kisk ass and the pieces that we have around him we are the team that is best equipped to beat the heat. I’m not too sure we are in need of KD just yet.

I think Melo is in that group just below the elite. However, KD is in that elite group right now, and I think a year or two down the road, he wil be the best player in the league.
I definitly agree that the Lakers are the team best equiped to challenge us and am really looking forward to the first head to head matchup. I just hope both teams are healthy. The Lakers are the reigning champs and to be the best you have to beat the best, I just cant wait for the season to start.
I agree, my sports life is a bit dead.
I’m expecting some intense battles.
