Who will be the 'center' of attention in Miami this season?

Vacations are great and much needed at times, but now that I'm home and still awake I wanted to type up something I'd been thinking about during my break.  First though, a quick thanks to all of you for keeping things live and interesting while I was away.  Now that the Heat has a more then full roster, there isn't much more for us to do then wait and speculate...

One thing that has been on my mind lately is Joel Anthony starting at center.  To me, it seems like the obvious decision to start him over Zydrunas Ilgauskas.  Miami's starting lineup is not going to lack anything on offense with all their new acquisitions, so having the defensive minded Anthony out there will provide a nice balance.

Those of you who have been following the Heat closely for the last couple years have probably said on more then one occasion that if Joel Anthony got a chance to start, or play 25+ minutes a game, he could possibly lead the league in blocked shots. While that seems like a very lofty goal, especially with Dwight Howard out there playing 35 minutes a game and averaging just under 3 blocks, the numbers say otherwise.

Star-divide

Joel should be right up there with the league leaders in blocks, while probably still averaging 5-10 minutes less then the people around him on the stat sheet.  Anthony has averaged 1.4 blocks while playing just 16 minutes a game in each of the past two seasons.  Double that and he's averaging more blocks then Dwight (and anyone else in the league) in 2 less minutes a game.

With so much talk about how Mario Chalmers could end up being the next Rajon Rondo, think about the possibility of the numbers Anthony could put up if he played 30-35 minutes every night.  The first guy I think of to compare him to, defensively only (at this point) is the great Alonzo Mourning.  Zo was a fearless shot blocker and I see a lot of those same qualities in Joel.

Anthony has also shown great improvements in each of his three seasons, working on everything from his footwork to his shooting to his hands.  When he first joined the Heat, I thought his hands were literally made of stone.  He could block the hell out of the ball but couldn't catch a cold in the paint on offense.  That isn't the case anymore, and now he's getting better at making moves with the ball and putting himself in a good position to score.

I also think that it makes more sense for Zydrunas to come off the bench. He's more of an offensive weapon then anything else, so having him on the court when the big 3 are resting seems like the smart thing to do.  Of course, until we have an idea of what kind of rotation Erik Spoelstra is going to roll with, all we can do is guess.  But for the same reasons I think Joel should start, bringing in Z off the bench and keeping him fresh seems like the logical move.

Who knows...maybe one center will play better with Chris Bosh and the other will be better suited playing with Udonis Haslem.  With all the lineup options this roster provides, the possibilities are endless.  When the season starts, all the attention will be on the big 3...that's a given.  After a couple weeks of Joel Anthony blocking 2-3 shots every game, with many of them on national TV, he could end up being the ‘breakout' guy instead of Mario Chalmers.  Or maybe both will breakout...

You know that old saying...'the best players are the ones that make their teammates better'.  Well starting now, the Miami Heat are going to put that to the test.  Can the ‘Super Friends' turn Joel and Rio into stars the way that Boston did with Kendrick Perkins and Rajon Rondo?  Honestly, at this point I have more confidence in Joel then I do Chalmers only because Anthony has shown a steady improvement in all three of his seasons while Rio seemed to take a step backwards in his sophomore year.

That doesn't mean Chalmers doesn't have the skills to become a great point guard in this league, and maybe playing with Wade, Bosh and LeBron will give him the confidence to turn into something special.  Just the fact that its up for discussion shows the possibility of Rio (and Joel) becoming something special.

Hmm

Joel is the defensive center,Z is the offensive center but slow, can block some shots and rebound,Magloire is the enforcer,Pittman is a working progress.
Sign Kwame Brown!

Miami Thrice is incredible....Heat Tri-nasty is inevitable!

I agree on Kwame

I think he could have been a Perkins type defender on this team

After the attributes you’ve listed against our center’s – why do we need Kwame?
Anthony and Z will get the majority of the minutes this year whilst Pittman develops – I think Anthony getting 25-30mins a night is best for this team, defensive guy in the middle with Z to give a different look – not including times when Bosh plays the 5 and Haslem the 4… no need for Kwame I think.

I agree that Anthony should start

He provides a dimension (shotblocking) that no one else on the team can. Yes, Wade and Lebron get blocks, but they are mostly chase down or weakside blocks. I want Anthony patrolling the paint from the beginning. We will, I believe, see more of Magloire in the regular season in order to save Big Z a little bit. Also, I feel strongly that Haslem will be playing center at the end of games. He is a better defender that both Anthony and Big Z (defender not shotblocker) even though he is undersized (he is only 1 inch shorter than Anthony though). He also gives you the same shot as Big Z on offense. Plus, if you think about it, how many teams go to their center at crunch time? The only one I can think of is Orlando which is fine. Just put Howard on the free throw line.

lag of size

sure Joel has great defensive abilities but he is to small for a true center. Can he block guys like Bynum or Shaq?
I guess no and also will have his problems with defending them in the post.. but every team has his weakness.

david is right on the money!

ask lebron about joel anthony. he has been very up front about his support for the under-sized center. his defense in the post will be the biggest factor in whether we win the NBA title this year or if we have to wait until next year (assuming no lock out) with a MLE player to fill that position. pittman is a project, z is what z is, and magloire, well, he’s a really, really good guy. UD can always be counted upon, but it will be up to joel to ensure that we are hoisting the o’brien trophy in june.

Joel

Yeah, I think Joel should start at center next to Bosh at power forward. Haslem can be brought off the bench for Joel or slide Bosh to center when Haslem comes in. I could also see Haslem and Z on the floor at the same time, playing alongside Wade or LeBron while Bosh is resting. Both Z and Haslem will be open for jumpers while Wade or LeBron draw double teams.

Seeing how this team’s rotations will play out will be fascinating. There’s just so many options.

the only thing the heat lack

is lbs at the 4 and 5 position. Anthony, Z, Bosh, Haslem are all light weight players compared to fat ass shaq, big bynum, howard, perkins. However, you know what those players dont have?
A shot. none of them can shoot the ball. Z Bosh Haslem can all make the jumper with a high %. Im telling you now, teams need to be careful with the amount of points they will give up.

thats all great during the regular season...

In the playoffs offense isn’t much of a factor as defense! Defense wins titles not offense.

by Tony_G on Aug 6, 2010 3:11 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

So we counter with DWade and Lebron (1st team defense), Haslem (defensive specialist) and Anthony (check his blocks per minute) as well as being coached by ’Spo who made the Heat a formidable defensive team last year…I think we will be OK on the defensive end.

I think the big issue is toughness and length

Because I can see a team with a big front court getting a bunch of second chance points

by MJ5 on Aug 5, 2010 6:15 PM EDT reply actions

An question here

Do you guys really think the Heat have the size to compete with Orlando and the Lakers? The centers seem to be a bit lacking in size. I want to belive they can, but i see a problem.

by kujo24 on Aug 5, 2010 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

Obviously, it is a potential problem

But I think we have enough talent on the wing and with Bosh to overcome it. The only player I am really worried about is Howard. However, we are more than good enough to keep pace with Orlando even if he is having a great game. Then at the end put him on the line. I am not really worried about Bynum because he is always hurt and isn’t much of an offensive force right now. But the only center who is undersized is Anthony (likely starter) Big Z is 7’3" and Magloire is 6’11". I think they are going to surprise a lot of people this season. Also, wasn’t Ben Wallace undersized, that worked well for him.

by #1Heatfan on Aug 5, 2010 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

bynum was hurt...

And he still was able to create problems for the wcf and give boston a hard time. Aside from that there’s another seven footer named gasol. And odom who is 6’11

by Tony_G on Aug 6, 2010 3:09 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Odom is the xfactor...

Odom doesn’t play sf he is the back up power forward! Finess player I didn’t get that last year or the year before from around the league. Rebound machine, the only length the heat have is z who I doubt can cover either Bynum or Gasol… Let alone Dwight Howard. Will be interesting to see how they adjust against the elite teams with length.

What we may lose defensively against the frontline of the Lakers we will more than make up on the offensive end with our wings + Bosh, regardless Lakers are the Champs and current benchmark and we are capable of matching up pretty well with them.
The Magic’s frontline is really just Howard, and as other teams have shown once he is in foul trouble the Magic frontline crumbles (Rashard Lewis…). With Wade, Lebron and Bosh hitting the rim it would be hard for any frontline to stay out of foul trouble consistently.
Regardless giving up 2-3 inches doesnt take into account positioning, execution, wingspan, vertical leaping and shot blocking ability of our own frontline + the added bonus that Bosh, Z and Haslem can hit the mid range shot consistently which could draw the opposing 4 or 5 out of the paint – if the other team play zone to combat that, they will be left to try and not draw fouls against Lebron and Wade.

don't forget Boston

I would fear the Celtics more as the others – with the signing of JO and Shaq and a possible return of Sheed, they have the strongest front line in the league! K.G. and JO will be 100% again and stronger than expected.

Chalmers is the same age as Rondo right now.

If he was going to be rondo wouldn’t he have been it already?

Big men is probably the most glaring weakness for you guys, (not that you don’t have strengths in other areas haha). But when the eastern conference champions and defending nba champions have exceptional depth in that area (Perkins, Garnett, Wallace, O’neal, O’neal, BBD) and (Gasol, Bynum, Odom). I think its something you guys should really focus on in your analysis.

Article is rubbish…
>Bosh doesn’t guard Dwight – pointless.
>Only mentioned DWade, Haslem and Anthony as holdovers from last year’s team – forgetting Mario, Arroyo, Magloire, James Jones…and of course Coach ‘Spo.
>Downplays Lebron and Dwade as streaky shooters…really? if that is the case I’m pretty sure everyone would want to be that streaky, complete disregard for 2 of the most offensively gifted players in the league…
>They’re hated and will get the best of every team every night… of course they will – same as the Lakers and Celts routinely get – it’s called being a contender.

The only legitimate one is the fifth

Atleast for this first season, the intensity other teams will every night will be unreal. I remember the first season our big 3 got together, and it was just relentless. And it has eased up significantly since then just because they’ve been together now for a while.

You guys are pretty hated, teams are going to do anything to see you guys fail.

Anthony is great at his cost

…but this whole notion that he would continue his blocks-per-minute production if you more than doubled his on court time is flawed, at best. 1.4 blks in 16 mins is nice, but to assume he would block 3 shots a game if given 35 mins seems like wishful thinking.

And I know they are getting a lot of offense from other positions, but do you want to have someone who is as big of a an offensive liability as Anthony on the floor for 35 mins a game? With that said, I still think he should start over Z, but only because Z is DONE. He can’t move anymore, just take jumpshots. He’s a slightly taller Michael Doleac at this point.

Zo would choke you out if he heard you compared him to Joel Anthony. Well, he probably wouldn’t because he is too nice of a guy, but he’d be justified in doing so if he did.

I'll buy Joel playing starter's minutes

say 25-30 minutes, but I don’t know if I buy him starting. Big Z can block a few shots at 7’3", and has a nice touch on that 10-15 foot jump shot. I can see him as the starter with Joel playing big minutes and Mags chipping in about 10 minutes a game.
