Around SBN: Peyton Manning Medically Cleared To Resume NFL Career

Giving the Miami Heat franchise some due credit, LeBron's GQ article and more...

I was going to start this off by saying ‘the biggest star to play for the Miami Heat..." when talking about LeBron James and his interview in GQ Magazine.  Before even getting to that, the statement I was going to make sprung up a debate in my head.  Who is the biggest star to ever play for the Heat?

Thinking of the candidates on that list, its pretty cool that our franchise has had so many great players.  Obviously there is Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron.  In our teams past, the next guy would be Shaquille O'Neal and then the lesser guys like Zo and Timmy.  And a step below that you can add Glen Rice, Dan Majerle and even Penny Hardaway, who played for the Heat but had all his best years elsewhere.

It makes me think about how our franchise cant be considered a young one anymore.  The Heat are over 20 years old now, they have won an NBA title and 7 division titles.  In 14 of their 22 seasons the Heat have made the playoffs, and without looking up every other team in the NBA's first 22 seasons I can it's a safe bet that only a few teams could make that same claim.

Star-divide

Also, over the last 15 years the Heat have only missed the playoffs 3 times.  When you think about how much the face of the team has changed in that time, it's a real testament to Pat Riley and Micky Arison and their dedication to winning.  While the roster has changed, the franchise has been a consistent winner.

So yeah, back to my original point...it's amazing how we have been able to watch the Heat grow from an expansion team to a playoff threat to an NBA champion and now to being on the verge of possibly becoming one of the best teams to ever play this game.  But who would you say is the biggest star to play for Miami? Was Shaq a bigger NBA name when he played for the Heat then LeBron or D-Wade is now?

Getting back to LeBron's GQ comments, he opened up a little and gave some insight into things that many of us had been wondering since ‘The Decision'.  The thing that I found most interesting was that the ultimate reason he joined Miami was to join his good friends and feel the team camaraderie that he hasn't felt since playing in high school.

I'll let you read the article for yourselves, but here are some highlights.

On his family:  "They're happy to see me happy. That's what they can see in my face. They say: ‘It's been a while since we've seen you look like that.'"

On Cavs owner Dan Gilbert: "I don't think he ever cared about LeBron. My mother always told me: ‘You will see the light of people when they hit adversity. You'll get a good sense of their character.' Me and my family have seen the character of that man."

On possibly returning to play for the Cavs someday: "If there was an opportunity for me to return and those fans welcome me back, that'd be a great story.... Maybe the ones burning my jersey were never LeBron fans anyway."

On how his upbringing helps him now: "That's what keeps me humble, because I know my background, know what my mother went through. I never get too high on my stardom or what I can do. My mom always says, and my friends say, ‘You're just a very low-maintenance guy.'"

I'm very happy that LeBron chose to play with the Heat because it makes our team that much better, but I'm really looking forward to getting to know what kind of guy he is.  I never really had much of an opinion of him other then knowing he was an amazing basketball player.

Any time there was a reason to poke fun or to hate on him, it was an easy thing to do.  When you are on top there are always a ton of people looking to knock you down.  Now that he is part of our ‘family' down here in Miami, I really want to know more about him and learn all the positive things that he brings to the table.

Outside of Miami not many people are going to know or even care about any of that stuff, which is why I feel like its important to find out all the positive things he can do other then his on-court abilities.  But hey...that's just me.  You all can do and think whatever you want about James, but regardless I know we'll all be cheering for him when he steps on the court as a Miami Heat.

Heat 2nd round pick Jarvis Varnado to play in Italy

Jarvis Varnado, who the Heat took with the 41st overall pick in last summer's draft, has signed with Carmatic Pistoia of the Italian League for the 2010-11 season.  This move means that the Heat will keep the rights to re-sign Varnado after the season if they so choose.

The shot-blocking specialist did a decent job with the Heat in their summer league, and giving him a year to hone his craft in Europe will only help his chances of someday joining Miami's star-studded roster.

Laker fan here

So I’ve dealt with Kobe haters since about, oh, 2004, and it gets extremely old. “Kobe is a rapist, he’s so arrogant, he’s a douche, he can’t win without a big.” It becomes redundant.

You guys, at least for the next 6 years, will deal with the same criticism. Hopefully LeBron can pull a Kobe and win 2 rings in a row to make them shut up.

But even then people will hate on LeBron. At least Kobe never said “Dr. Buss never cared for Kobe.” As much as I hate the LeBron haters, that was pretty douchey.

Everyone in this room is now dumber. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Wait a second "pharoah"

There are so many things wrong with your statement that I don’t know where to start. First of all, Kobe has never won anything without a “big.” In fact it is inargualbe that Pau wasn’t the best player in the finals last year. If kobe doesn’t miss 72 of his 120 shots (40% FG) in the first 4 games and instead Pau takes more than 60 shots (he shot over 60%), then the lakers would have swept the celtics who refuse to double team anyone. Just because kobe averaged 28 points while taking 30 shots in those games doen’t mean that he was the best player. He shot them out of each game and Pau and LO and Ron bailed out the team in each of those 4 wins.

Secondly, Kobe never had reason to say “Dr. Buss never cared” because he never left the team and Dr. Buss never called him all those names. So, you are comparing apples and martian grapefruit here.

If LeBron wins 2 rings, he will not be pulling a Kobe; he will be pulling a Gasol or a Shaq or a Jordan….

Kobe may not be a Rapist, but he is a sexual devient that at least paid off a woman to make an accusation go away. LBJ is a douche for some of his actions. If you want to see how kobe’s point totals don’t mean crap, let me know and I can give you some more examples like the one above. For now though, stop comparing him to productive players.

Biggest "Star" in a Heat jersey?

I would have to say Lebron… biggest “star” for sure as he is popular globally – completely different to best player – that is still DWade for me. If we had the early-2000’s version of Shaq might be a different story…

I truly hope that with the change in jersey we see a new level of maturity from LeBron – both on and off the court.

Glad that Varnado will spend a year overseas – I hope he bulks up a bit and works on his offence because his defence was fantastic during the summer league… I can see him stealing a roster spot after Juwan retires next year…

The only problem...

…is the use of the third person in describing Mr. Gilbert’s lack of caring. this is very MJ-like. Oh wait a second: maybe that’s a good thing!

1+3+6=how many rings???

by Dollar Man on Aug 18, 2010 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

Not douchey

The only thing i saw from that comment was Lebron refering to himself in the third person. Whenever a person does that he usually thinks of himself above all others. But in his case i dont mind because he is above most in the nba. Is he full of himself, maybe but thats what happens when people tell you your going to be the greatest when your still in middle school. I to would like to find out more about the man behind the game!

Shaq was probably the biggest name, I think he's known slightly more worldwide than Lebron just because he's been around a longertime including the 90s when the league was very popular worldwide

In terms of biggest star to have his best days in Miami? Wade or Zo

With all due respect, I can think of a few other NBA franchises with comparable resumes:
  • The Boston Celtics
  • The Los Angeles Lakers
  • The Atlanta Hawks (One title, more playoff appearances)
  • The Golden State Warriors (Excluding the BAA, fewer playoff appearances and one title)
  • The Milwaukee Bucks
  • The Washington Wizards

However, Miami won in a league with a lot more star power than those clubs did, and with the offseason, they are arguably more like the first two teams than they are the last four.

I wasn’t trying to belittle what those much older and storied franchises have done. This was just to give some credit to the Heat in way that some people may not have realized. In their relatively short history the Heat have achieved a lot and been very consistent. In 22 years they have won less then 20 games only three times, two of which were their first 2 seasons in the league. They have won 30 or more games in 17 of 22 seasons…

Like I was saying, a lot of those franchises were different time, different place.

And to be honest, I did “cheat” and do some research for this, so you can be excused for not being aware of what those teams did.

I will be honest, though, in any case, my hat goes off to Pat Riley for the job he did.

and even Penny Hardaway, who played for the Heat but had all his best years elsewhere

I thought it was Tim?

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

They both played for the Heat

Penny was on the 07-08 team for like 15 games. Didn’t do anything worth noticing for the Heat, just a name for the list. Back in the 90’s he was pretty good with Orlando.

GUYS, TREY KERBY IS MOST THE MOST ANNOYING LOSER!!!

every time i read his posts it makes me feel he’s trying to put other fans against us. isn’t there any control to this mess from TK?

by flash3 on Aug 19, 2010 12:13 AM EDT reply actions

as far as the "biggest star" to play for us, i would say its lebron:

at the time that shaq came to miami, he wasnt really considered the best/a top 3 player in the NBA.

maybe the best big man, but not the best player

all these other people (with the exception of wade, who i will mention later) weren’t mentioned as top 3 or so players either

so, with that said, now its between wade and lebron

these are both top 3 players and potential hall of fame players if their careers continue on the path that they are on right now

but, i think its lebron because even though wade is my favorite player EVER, lebron is a bigger star cuz he is the more known, and gets more attention than, i beleive, any other player in the NBA

LeBron is more hated

Due to his tanking the Celtics series, his hypocrisy on his desire to “win”, the “Decision”, and the multiple examples of his Super-ego…
