Don't expect the Heat's roster to change much more
Something that has been getting a decent amount of attention lately is the center situation in Miami. There are a lot of people out there who feel like the Heat are undersized and need to bring in another body to play in the paint. I understand that Joel Anthony isn't the biggest guy but I still think that he can do a perfectly fine job playing center for the Heat.
Anthony is ‘only' 6'9" but that hasn't stopped him from putting up some amazing blocks per minute stats and providing a defensive boost whenever he's on the court. I am also very enthused by the fact that Joel has improved considerably every season of his career, and there is no reason to think he wont continue down that path this year.
I think that he is going to have a breakout year this season, for several reasons. The increase in playing time will obviously provide a boost to his numbers, and all the nationally televised games combined with tons of attention the Heat will be getting will certainly help Joel get some exposure.
Next to Anthony is newcomer Zydrunas Ilgauskas. I think he'll end up playing backup to Joel, which will be mutually beneficial to both. Keeping Big Z fresh throughout the season will be clutch when the playoffs roll around and the Heat have to deal with guys like Dwight Howard and Boston's O'Neal twins.
There is also going to be some kind of good center coming out of the Western Conference assuming the Heat get all the way to the Finals. Whether its Andrew Bynum, Tim Duncan, Brendan Haywood...someone very solid will be waiting for the Heat in June.
Zydrunas is a big dude, listed at 7'3" 260lbs. This guy was the starting center in Cleveland for a decade, always giving a full effort and leaving it all on the court. He rebounds very well and has averaged over a block/game every year before last season when his minutes dropped by almost 10.
Big Z is a career 47.5% shooter from the field with many of his shots coming from outside the paint. His perimeter shooting is something he's worked on a lot over the past few years, and in the last two seasons has added the 3-pointer to his shooting repertoire. After taking 7 or less treys in each of the first 10 years of his career, he has gone 26-for-62 (42%) in the last two years.
Despite Joel and Zydrunas, some people think that the Heat needs another big body down there. A name that has been thrown around a lot both on this blog as well as among members of the media is Kwame Brown. Brown is 6'11" 270lbs. He's a league veteran who had his best years with the Wizards and Lakers, but since leaving L.A. in 2008 his game has struggled.
Over the last three seasons playing for Memphis and Detroit, Brown has played about 15 minutes a game, scoring 3.6 points on 51.8% shooting while grabbing 4.1 rebounds. If he joined the Heat, would they put him in a position to play ahead of Joel Anthony or Zydrunas Ilgauskas? I doubt it. There is no way he would play more then 15 minutes a game; it would probably closer to 10 or less.
So why would the Heat bring in someone who is strikingly similar in both size and style to Jamaal Magloire? Both guys had some very good seasons, none closer then 2007 though. Both have seen their production and numbers decline but still provide their teams with solid bench play, in many ways exceeding what is expected from the usual 2nd or 3rd string center.
I understand that looking at our roster, the center position is the one that could be picked out as needing an upgrade the most. That still doesn't mean we need that upgrade, I just think it's a case of people seeing names like Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James next to Joel Anthony and Mario Chalmers' on the roster and thinking we need guys who are as big of names as our ‘Big 3'.
I don't think the Heat will be adding any more players before training camp because the roster looks pretty damn good. The players who some feel need to be replaced with better guys (Joel, Chalmers, Magloire, Arroyo...centers and PG's) have all been with this team for a while, so the coaching staff knows exactly what they are getting.
I expect Joel to show nice improvements on offense while his D will speak for itself. I would like to expect a similar improvement from Mario Chalmers, but for now I'm just hoping that the kid will play with some confidence and maybe even a little swagger. Get his mind off of ‘not messing up' and just have fun with the guys around him.
With Magloire and Arroyo you know exactly what your getting, and while I think Arroyo will get a bit more playing time...Magloire is one of the most important guys on this team. It isn't what you see on the court, but on the bench and in the locker room is where the Big Cat's value lies.
Since joining the Heat back in 2008, Magloire has provided the team with a veteran's leadership and priceless experience and advice. Those people saying the Heat need ‘size' and ‘bulk' must not know Jamaal very well. If there is ever a time where things get chippy out there, Magloire is the guy to send on the floor.
He's more then happy to mix it up and defend his teammates, something that may be an issue with all the Heat-hate out there. That's just part of what Magloire does for his team. He is a big, positive presence in the locker room and is a vocal leader on this team.
The roster we have right now should be more then enough to dominate the league. If you have reached the point where you don't feel comfortable with what the Heat has to offer, stop reading this right now and just go look at their roster. Look at the names, the stats, the depth...and if you still feel like the Heat need to do more then I don't know what to tell you.
The only move I can see the team making at some point this season would be to bring in a perimeter ‘shut down' defender. That's where a Matt Barnes or even a Raja Bell would've been a great fit. Still, the Heat are going to score a ton of points so this could end up being a non-issue but it's the only real need I could see the team having this season. Otherwise, I think they are in good shape.

Great read David
I can’t wait for this team to finally hit the floor. I think people are underestimating the quality that of the big 3 (especially Bosh) when looking at our depth.
Whenever people talk about our “bigs” Bosh isn’t mentioned – the fact that he is the 3rd best player on this team is incredible. We still have Haslem providing interior defense as well plus the fact that one thing Spo does get right is his defensive coaching. Opposing bigs still need to be able to get the ball – not so easy with Mario, Wade and Lebron lurking the perimeter and making life difficult for opposing guards and influencing passing lanes.
Anthony will be great this year with a defined role and the minutes to produce – Z will help stretch opposing 5’s from the paint and our defensive zone should be improved from last years stellar efforts. All in all I think we will be as good defensively as we will be offensively – worst case, matchup issues in the frontcourt defensively will be more than balanced by matchup issues in the backcourt offensively.
Can’t wait to see the quality of basketball this team produces.

I am one of those people who would like to bring Kwame in
Just want to clarify that it is not because I think Joel is a bad player. He is great on D and provides great energy, but I am just worried about his rebounding come playoff time. Because of his size, he is not a great rebounder and we need someone to control the boards against LA and Orlando. You can’t give second chance points to great teams and expect to win. Like the post said, Kwame was only getting 15 mpg, of course he wasn’t putting up numbers. I thought this would have been the best scenario. Kwame starts (25mpg), Joel comes off the bench (20mpg), and we save Big Z for the playoffs. This gives size and someone to control the boards in the starting lineup and leaves Joel in that energy role off the bench that he thrives in. I think Anthony being the starter and playing a lot of minutes will diminish some of his effectiveness. In my opinion, leaving him to his bench role while giving him a few more mpg will maximize his effectiveness and give us a big, strong rebounder/ defender in the starting lineup. But, since most roster spots are spoken for, I realize that this is unlikely to happen, which I am fine with. Even without Kwame we had a decent off-season, we improved the team a bit in my opinion
Erick Dampier would be better....
granted he would have to waived by CHA first, but in the event that they can’t find a trade partner and waive him (very likely), MIA should pick him up.
That would also be great
but I think if you pick up a player that has been waived, you have to pick up his salary too (like 13 mil). So he would have to be bought out and then sign for the min. However, I am not sure if what I am saying is 100% correct. Does anyone else know?
If he gets waived
the team waving him reaches an agreement on the buyout—whether that’s 100% or a negotiated amount is betweent he player, his agent, and the team. Once he’s officially released, anyone can pick him up for whatever amount. In Dampier’s case, that’s the veteran minimum, which I think is like $1.2 million.
As an aside, I’d love to see Dampier come in. I had a chance to meet him, shake his hand, and talk a little basketball with him about two years ago. He played his college ball at Mississippi State, which is where I attended undergrad, so I’d buy it from that standpoint, but I actually think the Heat should stand pat for a minute and see how things shake out with who we have right now. If we need to add a piece later, we’ll have options.

Hmm
I would not mind Kwame Brown added or if Dampier was bought out and we sign him.
Point blank….
Next season we still must upgrade the center spot.
Oden,Marc Gasol,Tyson Chandler,Deandre Jordan are all free agents next season.
Surely we can sign one of them.
I did not include Perkins cause I doubt he leaves the celtics and with the addition of Collison to the pacers I doubt they let Hibbert walk.

Oh yea
Samuel Dalembert is also a free agent after this upcoming season.

What is this?
Did you write this like a month ago? The roster is full. All 15 players have been signed.
Helloo Mcfly?
Just because they have 15 guys guaranteed doesn’t mean they wouldn’t sign someone else and pay a guy like Dexter Pittman to sit out and learn. Right now there are 17 guys under some kind of contract, 14 of which are guaranteed. Wade, Bosh, James, Haslem, Miller, Anthony, House, Magloire, Howard, Zydrunas, Arroyo, Jones, Clamers and Pittman all have guaranteed contracts. Hasbrouck, Beverly and Randolph are all not guaranteed.
Not saying they will sign someone, but it is an option.
But yeah, generally I write things and wait a few weeks to post them…I’m too busy at the Enchantment Under The Sea dance.

The Heat don't need anymore players for the moment...
I seriously doubt some people on this blog have watched the Heat before. I live in Australia and am lucky to watch maybe 10 Heat games a year but have been a fan of them since the Timmy and Zo days.
Was thrilled Wade resigned and Bosh tagged along but was more “oh well” about LeBron (the guy is a big douche bag). I thought once we got Wade and Bosh we should have then focused on filling out the roster with a fantastic supporting cast (not that we haven’t). Of course you don’t say no to the 3rd best player in the game (I list Wade and Durant in front of him – mainly based on the fact his douchery takes him down a level or two) wanting to join your team.
But why would we want to add people like Kwame or Ericka??
Kwame is one of the biggest #1 draft busts of all time. Ericka has been given the chance by Dallas to be an elite centre for years and come up well short. Joel is not pretty but as indicated by the author of this article does a great job defensively. Z is there for the bigger guys that are just too big and strong for Joel (Dwight, Yao, Bogut, Shaq etc) and Magloire does what he does (although the hand over the eyes dunks are just stupid).
But there are two things everyone needs to remember about the centre position.
One – how many great centres really are there in the league?? Dwight certainly. The Bynum/Gasol combo will cause problems and Bogut if he comes back from the injury like he was playing like last year (and no, it’s not an Australian thing, he was clearly coming into his own last year) will also cause problems. But other great centres?? Yao is coming back from so many major injuries his minutes will be limited let alone how productive he will be is a question mark. Shaq, Jermaine, Chandler and a few others are all shadows of themselves, let alone miss chunks with injuries. Plus Dwight really hasn’t got great post moves unless you give him space which brings me to point…
Two – What will Kwame or Ericka add that the Heat can’t already cover with our very effective zone?? Haslem has been stopping people for years while being undersized and Joel is in the same mold. Bosh’s length is a plus and now we have LeBron as well as Wade coming in from behind for blocks and steals. We had a “defensive big” last year (and I use the term loosely although he had his moments) with Jermaine and how well did that work?? I seem to remember it was Haslem and Joel getting big minutes in the end last year because our defensive big wasn’t getting the job done.
The PG position is fine because Arroyo/Chalmers are basically only there to bring the ball across half court for the 1st 6 minutes of every quarter. You think the ball will be in anyone but Wade’s or James’ hands inside the last 6mins of any quarter in any game that isn’t a blowout?? If you do then please go back to Basketball 101.

Agreed
Next season when there are a list of centers available at free agent we should land one of them.
Marc Gasol,Oden(if healthy),Dalembert,Hibbert(I doubt the pacers let him walk),Perkins(if healthy),Deandre Jordan.
All good points bro.
My thing was when we won our first title we had to of the best centers of a generation in Shaq/Zo and Doleac was a situational center.
We know Joel should have a break out season and as long as Z is a good spark off the bench we will be fine.
Miami Thrice is incredible....Heat Tri-nasty is inevitable!

The only problem with that logic is the only one of those players I can see signing for the mid- level exception is Dalembert.
Possibly Oden because of injuries, but he will be a restricted free agent as will DeAndre Jordan. However I would love to add Jordan 6’11" 250 lbs, 22 yrs old. Would be a great addition, but I cant see the Clips letting a good 22 yr old center go for a pretty reasonable price (about 6 mil)
I agree with both points..
However, the teams with the great centers are the teams that we will have to match up against in a 7 game series. I agree with the zone d point as well. But, I am not as much worried about the D as I am with rebounding. Yes, Lebron and Bosh are good rebounders for their positions, but I would like a big body to box out Dwight and Bynum once the shot is missed. You cannot give Orlando or LA additional shots and still expect to win, those teams are too good. I would not expect Dampier or Kwame to become great players, I just feel that they can become decent role players on a championship team.
Positioning...
…has more to do with boxing out than a big body. It’s about knowing where your man is and putting any body on him. Haslem is great at this and hopefully Joel will be as well. This is why Rondo gets so many rebounds because as KG ages and his legs go, his boxing out (which he is still the king at) allows Rondo to come in and swipe easy boards.
I just don’t trust Kwame to have the smarts to accomplish this let alone Dampier who has proven he doesn’t. Rebounding is a team game as much as an individual being a great rebounder (watch highlights of Rodman – he out-rebounded guys twice his size on boxing out and tipping the ball to himself instead of trying to out-muscle people).

You have to be kidding me, he hits game winners all the time but because Avery run him into the ground in 2006-07 he isn’t a very good player??

He didn’t play well but just because he didn’t have 40-15-20 every game doesn’t mean he threw it…
With your logic, Kobe was trying to throw the finals by going 6-24 in game 7…

BS
Starts are one thing – standing on the weak side between halfcourt and the 3-pt line while your teammates go 4 on 5 is another.
Kobe was pressing, but that was a Finals game 7, you could SEE HIS EFFORT throughout.
In comparison, just watch LeBron in game 3, and then in games 4 and 5 – no question he didn’t play with effort – it’s OBVIOUS!
Interesting wrt your question "Have you ever intentionally shot a basketball to miss?? – That’s EXACTLY what LeQUIT looked like he was doing on his open 3-pt shots in game 5…

I am just saying that I respectfully disagree
I don’t see any downside in bringing in Kwame. I agree that he is a huge bust, He was drafted very high and never developed his offensive game (which is expected of a high pick). However, we would not be using a high pick on him, just a min contract. Give him a 1 yr contract and if it doesn’t work, let him walk and sign a center for the mid- level exception. It is basically risk free and it could end up helping because we don’t need to even give him the ball, just tell him to put his body on Dwight and Bynum.
Joel Anthony is NOT an NBA starting center
Nice pic of a block on a 6’4" player at the top…
There won’t be many of those against Noah, Dwight Howard, Shaq or either Gasol. IF he ends up starting at the 5, he will struggle when matched against true 5’s, and many teams will play Bosh with their 5 on defense, which will make Bosh’s offense suffer
I think team rebounding WILL be an issue for the heat, I can’t see them being in the top 15 with this roster.
Considering everything, I’m surprised at the Heat signing some of these scrubs and ignoring Earl Barron (who had 17/18 vs the Celts last year while with the Knicks)….
