Jeff Van Gundy has high hopes for the Heat

We're less then two months away from training camp, and hopefully now that football season is upon us the time will go by even quicker.  Well, that's assuming you guys are as psychotically into football as I am...so if you aren't, my bad.  PS- Go Dolphins.

Getting back to basketball, the biggest Heat news out there right now is from former NBA coach and current ESPN/ABC analyst Jeff Van Gundy.  My best memory of Jeff is him on the floor hanging on to Alonzo Mourning's leg during one of the awesome playoff fights between the Heat and Knicks back in the 90's.  That is one of the positives of the Knicks getting better, the renewal of a great but forgotten NBA rivalry.

Star-divide

It started out with comments he made to the Miami Herald, saying that the Heat had a "legit shot" to break the 72-win record set by the Chicago Bulls in 1995-96.  Then yesterday he appeared on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000 in Chicago and elaborated on that claim.

"I would think that everybody would think they would have a great shot at it.  I don't know if I said they will or they have a great chance, whatever I said, I just think if they're healthy, the discrepancy between their talent level and the next level is so great, that I just don't see how they lose games.  I think they're that good."

The first question that pops in my mind is whether or not he's being more optimistic or realistic.  Trying to be as un-bias as possible, it's very easy to believe that if the Heat stay healthy then they would win 70ish games.  Maybe more.  This is an amazing collection of talent that will be near impossible to stop on offense.  And what about defense?  Van Gundy addressed that too...

"Erik Spoelstra is a heck of a coach, so they're going to be motivated to play well defensively, which is about coaching, and offensively they're going to be an absolute nightmare to deal with.  If LeBron James can win 66 games in the regular season with the guys he played with, who I think are better than people have given them credit for in Cleveland, then I think you add Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Mike Miller, it's not a stretch to say they can win six more."

The point he makes about LeBron in Cleveland is so true.  And that is no knock on the Cavs players because they were pretty damn good, and have been good for several years.  Mo Williams doesn't get the credit he deserves as one of the better point guards in the league, and I feel like Antawn Jamison and Anderson Varejao fly way under the radar considering how good they are.

However, their roster pales in comparison to the one the Heat now has.  Pretty much every roster in the NBA comes up short to ours, and that is before guys like Mario Chalmers and Joel Anthony benefit off of the talent on the players around them.  Unfortunately it's just going to be the norm that people are going to constantly be hating on the Heat.  Just because it's a popular topic doesn't mean it should be bought in to, and JVG acknowledged that as well.

"I think people are trying to pick on Miami right now instead of opening their eyes to just how great they are.  There are going to be no chemistry issues.  Wade and James are unselfish players.  That doesn't mean if they win a championship it's a great accomplishment either, because they're so much better than everybody.  But to discount just how good they are, I think people are making a mistake."

While I like how he takes it to another level, saying the Heat are so good that winning a title isn't a great accomplishment.  I think it's a pretty big deal, and I think that when the Bulls were winning their 6 titles in the 90's, each and every one was a big deal to them.

I realize that this is just one guy and Jeff Van Gundy is no NBA guru but it's nice to hear some positivity and (whether or not you want to admit it), realism coming from a very public basketball figure.  Or maybe he's just trying to piss his brother off.  Either way...considering all the b-s I've been reading lately, this was a pleasant little surprise.

FYI- The NBA will release full team schedules sometime today, so keep your eyes open for that because I'm sure there will be 'leaks' of schedules leading up to the official release.  I'll leave you with this video, which is totally unrelated to the story you just read.  Another random and funny thing sent to me from Snoop97Dawg...enjoy.

Personally I hate the Van Gundy’s (Jeff and Stan) – Loudmouth, obnoxious and ill-informed generally. Jeff Van Gundy as a commentator is reprehensible to me – he comments on aura and “greatness” and tabloid headlines during games (eg starting a discussion about legacy of players) rather than calling out the action on-court with any real insight.

In this case I think he may just be blowing smoke – if he is right, he’ll be a “genius” – if he is wrong he will be the first to criticise an injury, player or coach if he is called on his quote after the fact.
It pains me to think he might be right when assessing this team’s talent sans Lebron and comparing it to last year’s Cleveland squad. Realistically though I think this team will be just as dominant defensively and I see them winning around 65 games – as long as they are #1 seed I’ll be happy with any win total.

Hmm

Ha ha ha.
Funny vid.
Am a big heat fan but not sure I would actually buy cardboard posters of any player.
Am definitely getting my Wade jersey sometime this month though.
Let’s go heat!

Van Gundy...

…knows a thing or two about the game (annoying as he may be) and his prediction will prove to be accurate. Haters beware! The Heat are for real.

1+3+6=how many rings???

Intentional to put more pressure on the Heat

High expectations always make things tougher – so why not say this roster can break the all-time regular season wins record – no matter how ridiculous it is?

by nba is the worst on Aug 15, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think Wade, Lebron, or Bosh care what Van Gundy says

So I highly doubt it would put more pressure on them. However, I am one of the few who does not want any part of the record. I rather have a healthy, well rested team come playoff time.

I just cant see any line up whether in the east or west.....

Challenging these guys! Scary when you sit back anbd think of the Defense and grit this team has now…to have turned into a bullying mad crazy defensive team!

Here they are: Youre defending Champions (twice)
Los Angeles Lakers
Point Guard: Derek Fisher Steve Blake
Shooting Guard: Kobe Bryant Shannon Brown
Small Forward: Ron Artest Matt Barnes
Power Forward: Pau Gasol Lamar Odom
Center: Andrew Bynum Theo Ratliff

Now lets take a peak at the scary looking Heat:

Point Guard: Mario Chalmers Eddie House (Oh god watch out)
Shooting Guard: Dwyane Wade Mike Miller (Mike miller MVP)
Small Forward: LeBron James Da’Sean Butler
Power Forward Chris Bosh Udonis Haslem (These guys are a scary bunch)
Center: Joel Anthony Zydrunas Ilgauskas (Icing on the cake, here are your defensive anchors)

It is all how you look at it, here is how I see it

Here they are: Youre defending Champions (twice)
Los Angeles Lakers
Point Guard: Derek Fisher Steve Blake (Old; decent PG)
Shooting Guard: Kobe Bryant Shannon Brown (Aging star that will hit the wall the season or next; ?)
Small Forward: Ron Artest Matt Barnes (Aging headcase; solid role player)
Power Forward: Pau Gasol Lamar Odom (Best Center in league gift wrapped from Memphis; good one day, bad the next day candy freak)
Center: Andrew Bynum Theo Ratliff (Good Center but often injured; ancient)

Now lets take a peak at the scary looking Heat:

Point Guard: Mario Chalmers Eddie House (good young guard—no need for a real PG on this team; good long range shooter that should have plenty of wide open jumpers)
Shooting Guard: Dwyane Wade Mike Miller (Wade Co-MVP; another good long range shooter, same as House)
Small Forward: LeBron James Da’Sean Butler (Co-MVP; Good athletic young player)
Power Forward Chris Bosh Udonis Haslem (All-star PF; solid role player with good mid-range shot)
Center: Joel Anthony Zydrunas Ilgauskas (Young athletic with plenty of potential; 7’3" with a good mid-range) :)

It’s going to be fun watching the Heat prove you wrong. Until then go flame your own boards.

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

JVG is nuts

Adam Morrison has more rings than Lebron, Bosh, and Wade combined?

by shaqfor3 on Aug 10, 2010 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

I love JVG

So entertaining. I’d listen to any game he’s doing play-by-play for.

But this 72 wins prediction is transparent BS. He’s just trying to stir the pot. Add pressure. Both brothers have a beef with Riley. Anything JVG says about the Heat should be disregarded.

by jamesyj on Aug 10, 2010 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

I'm a huge fan of JVG

But this is just a tad(see: a lot) of a stretch. 65 wins is the max for this team IMO.

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

He's not nuts

He just calls it how he see’s it. Why not 72+, thats easier than 33 in a row. Lebron had 66 wins with mo williams. Maybe Stan has beef but that should be toward shaq. Listen Pat Riley made the van gundy’s into a household name. Yes they have earned what they have got but without pat opening the door for them we would of never heard about them, and i think they know that.

Think about the Colts and Patriots last year. Once they clinched, the Colts sat their starters, and sacrificed their perfect season, but still made the Super Bowl. The Patriots played their starters, but lost Welker in a fairly meaningless game. They went no where in the playoffs.

In the NBA, once you clinch best record (64 wins?), there’s really no reason to play your starters more than a little bit. Primary concern is getting them fresh and healthy.

Do I think the Heat COULD win 72? Yes, I really do. So JVG is right in that respect. Do I think they’d bother? Probably not.

only one team ever has won 72 games

every year the media always picks a team to shatter the record and it never happens.

Adam Morrison has more rings than Lebron, Bosh, and Wade combined?

by shaqfor3 on Aug 11, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Only one ever won 70

And just 2 achieved 69 – yet 23% of you voters said 70+…

This team has no championship-level center, which will affect the rebounding across the board.

No rebounds, no rings

by nba is the worst on Sep 5, 2010 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

This is actually

the smartest thing I have EVER heard Van Gundy the Lesser say. The Heat roster is not loaded with guys who are barely in the League. We will have at least two or three guys who would be legit starters on other teams this season.

The key will be defense. Our guys will have to be uber-focused. Everybody will be trying to take them down, so they will have to dig in and try to keep everybody under 90 points.
