The top Three Biggest Losers of the Offseason

After discussing the top free-agents remaining in the league, it’s time to move on to the unfortunate teams that were never able to make the crucial signings, trades, or sign-and-trades that they anticipated this offseason.

New Jersey Nets

Heading into the offseason the New Jersey Nets new owner, Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, made a pretty bold statement that put the NBA world in a state of confusion.

Prokhorov stated that the Nets would win an NBA championship within the next five years, with or without LeBron James.

Whether or not that statement should be taken seriously should be based off of the horrendous offseason that the team has had.

In addition to losing out on the LeBron sweepstakes, the Nets received a strong back-hand in the face by power-forward Carlos Boozer who agreed to a five-year $80 million deal with the Chicago Bulls only two hours after being offered a five-year $75 million contract by New Jersey.

With not much talent remaining on the market, the Nets decided to spend a grand total of $57 million between Johan Petro (three-year, $10 million), Travis Outlaw (five-year, $35 million), and Jordan Farmar (three-year, $12 million).

While the Nets clearly lost out on big named free-agents, spending $22 million between two unproven players (Farmar and Petro) makes you question whether or not Prokhorov is truly a smart owner.

At least the Nets acquired sharp-shooter Anthony Morrow in a sign-and-trade, but as for winning a championship within the next five seasons, that remains to be seen.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Many expected for teams like the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers, and New Jersey Nets to miss out on the LeBron sweepstakes.

But once LeBron decided to sign with the Miami Heat the biggest loser out of the group of potential suitors was undoubtedly the Cleveland Cavaliers.

With no LeBron the Cavaliers roster has gone from leading the league in wins during the last two seasons to a 30 win team at best.

After owner Dan Gilbert’s infamous “I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE” letter to his fellow Cavs fans, Cleveland managed to sign Houston Rockets point-guard Kyle Lowry to an overly generous offer sheet (three-year, $24 million contract with a fourth option year) in which Houston matched it.

With no activity other than losing James and Ilgauskas, the Cavaliers finally made a deal in which they acquired Minnesota Timberwolves point-guard Ramon Sessions, center Ryan Hollins, and a 2013 second-round draft pick.

As for winning a championship before LeBron James does, dream on Mr. Gilbert.

Minnesota Timberwolves

What an offseason for Minnesota.

You gotta hate to lose more than you want to win

As a Net Fan

i somewhat agree. I think we will definitely be better than last year and offseason moves were beneficial to the team. The only reason i look at this off season as a failure would be because of the amount of hope and promise that buzzing around. Proxy made a bold prediction and his charm and confidence won us all over in new Jersey. I think the biggest off season moves both positive and negative for Jersey has nothing to do with the players. The best is the new head coach in Avery Johnson who i think will put the emphasis on defense that the young team needs. and the worst move this year is seeing Rod Thorn “retire” i think it the best move for him to make personally as he will leave the rebuilding to the new regime but he has done great things for that franchise and will be missed especially with his incompetent replacement Billy King.

The 3 biggest winners: Miami, Lakers, Bulls

3 biggest losers: Cleveland, Toronto, and Nets (at least the Knicks were able to get Amare)

It’s very interesting how the power chain has gone back from West to East. I remember back in the early 2000’s the best the east coast had was the Nets, while the West had the Lakers, Spurs, Kings, Mavs, and Blazers.

It will be very interesting to see how this season plays out

In Kobe we trust!

i say miami, bulls, knicks (amare, felton)

The Lakers lost an aging and declining Derek Fisher

replaced him with a younger Steve Blake
they lost Jordan Farmar, a 2nd Unit PG easily replaceable, and they got Matt Barnes, a defensive stud for a defensive oriented team, that can shut down defenders, and POTENTIALLY give us problems

wow, i stand corrected

and i totally knew that, just had a little lapse i guess, my bad…so they only lost Farmar and gained Steve Blake and Barnes, making their offseason even better

Fisher is not a plus.

He’s not that good now, especially defensively.

but…if you are talking about him as a 9th or 10th guy in the rotation, he is solid.

exactly. If he isn’t a starter, they are already significantly improved.

Biggest LOSERS
1) Cleveland
2) New Jersey
3) New York

Cleveland did nothing good to convince LeBron to stay. And they did it for 7 long years.

Nets really had the money, but not the winning mentality and culture to lure big free agents to Atlantic City.

Knicks had the money, glitz, and glamour. They pre-signed Amare Stoudemire. But James Dolan and Mike D’Antoni don’t have what it takes to win championships. I mean, RUN AND GUN OFFENSE with minimal defensive focus? That’s gotta be a joke! No wonder Phoenix never won the West! Plus, the negativity surrounding the Knicks due to what Isiah Thomas did still hangs over the franchise.

no, knicks had a great offseason

Knicks had a pretty damn good offseason

signing Amare (who is now Jewish btw) and Felton are pretty good signings, Felton is going to be a stud…

My Biggest LOSERS
3) Clippers
2) New Jersey
1) Cleveland
Honorable Mention: Minnesota

But they traded David Lee away to the Warriors and got back garbage.
Plus they lost out on the LeBron FA chase.

Amare and David Lee would’ve been a nice front court with Felton manning the point.

Clippers always suck in the offseason.

by Rasetsu on Jul 30, 2010 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

but at least they got a max guy

and a young stud, which is a lot more than some other teams can say

this is completely wrong but you are right about the cavs being the biggest loser.

Oh yeah…

The Minnesota Timberpups are ALWAYS LOSERS in the offseason since trading KG to Boston! With David Kahn running that team like a traffic aide high on drugs and hard liqour, they don’t need to make the list of biggest offseason losers.

No wonder Ricky Rubio wants to stay in Spain rather that play in the NBA!

As for winning a championship before LeBron James does, dream on Mr. Gilbert.

As for making a career out of writing about sports, dream on Mr. Reebok.
