Why we can expect an all-around better experience when attending Heat games

Over the last few years, the scene in Downtown Miami on a Heat game night hasn't been anything special. You know that something is going on because the parking lots get filled and the area around the arena has people scattered all over the place. Still though, the feeling that you'd get when walking up to the AAA was nothing special..
It wasn't that long ago when things were a lot different down here. Everything on a gameday had a different feel to it. From waking up in the morning to watching the game that night, there was an electricity in the air that had all of Miami catching ‘Heat fever'.
While the excitement all over town was pretty awesome, the atmosphere around the arena is something that you had to experience for yourself. No matter which direction you looked in there would be Heat shirts, jerseys, flags and anything else you can think of that people can wear to show their support.
The City of Miami has always held a special bond with its basketball team that really cemented during the glory days of Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway. The bond that was built in the 90's held strong during the rebuilding years earlier this decade, but everything would get considerably better in 2003.
After back-to-back losing seasons, the Heat used their lottery pick on Dwyane Wade and changed the face of the franchise forever. The next year Pat Riley traded for Shaquille O'Neal and for the first time in its history, the Heat and its fans had a true superstar to go along with budding young stud D-Wade, and the fans responded in a big way.
Every time the Heat had a home game the downtown-Bayside area would be a party zone. There would be DJ's, live music, performers, games and plenty of other stuff going on outside the AAA. Beyond the ‘yard' of the arena, the streets would be filled with people either in Heat clothes or dressed like they were going to the club.
The Heat were the hot topic all over town for the better part of 3 years, and despite struggling mightily through a 15-win season in 2008, the fans of Miami still showed up to support their team, averaging the 8th highest attendance in the league that year.
After the hype of the mid-2000's team died down, so did the fever. That's just one of the drawbacks of playing in a town like Miami...but that door swings both ways. As fun and crazy as it got around here 5-6 years ago, that is nothing compared what we're going to see in the coming seasons.
ESPN, TNT, The NBA Network...they are going to be all over the Heat. With all the ‘love' and attention this team is going to get nationally, they are going to be one of the popular kids in professional sports. In a town that loves to be fashionable and cool, Miami is going to have the trendy topic in the NBA playing in their backyard.
Needless to say, the entire region of South Florida is going to be coming down with a severe case of that ‘Heat fever' I mentioned earlier. Downtown is going to be Heat Party Central for around 50 nights every basketball season, and those kind of nights are exactly what this town is good at.
Now I know this part is a stretch, but bear with me... bloggers can dream too. With the consistent flow of fans who have a tendency for pre and post-game partying, the atmosphere around the AAA on gamedays could be something that becomes a tradition.
I think of the street festivals that go on outside of Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park leading up to games. Combine that with some Miami style, Latin flavor outdoor partying and throw in a red carpet for the celebs that call Miami home, or the ones who will be coming to town just to see our Miami Thrice. All those things rolled into one is what Heat fans could very well have to look forward to.
One thing that I can say for sure is that starting this season, going to see D-Wade, LeBron and the Heat is going to be much more then going to an NBA game; it's going to be an experience. The electricity, atmosphere, ambiance and all that stuff...from the moment you get out of your car and walk to the arena, to when you get goosebumps during the pre-game intros when Mike B asks your to ‘stand up and make some noise', it's all going to be something special that I hope each and every one of you Heat fans can truly appreciate.

Don’t raise to high expectations – nothing is done yet ^_° I compare DWade + LBJ with MJ + Pippen – the bad feeling in my stomach about this: they didn’t play together since they had begun their NBA-Careers – Pippen always played with Jordan… that will be a huge learning-process for them…
Pippen always played with Jordan
umm no he didnt. Sonics? Traded?

Pippen played 7 seasons without Jordan…2 in Chicago when Jordan was retired. 1 in Houston, 4 in Portland and his last season in 2003-2004 when he returned to Chicago.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

well I will admit I was wrong
Ha, he did play with out Jordan.

this pretty much contradicts what you first said. you point out that Lebron and Wade are 2 and 6 respectively in PER of all time. they are also 2 and 3 in usage # of all time
What this shows is they both are good at scoring a lot and putting up a lot of other stats, but they also do it by being ‘the guy’ on offense and having the ball a lot. Now I am not calling them ballhogs, because neither one is, however as you can see, they have to have the ball in their hands a lot to be effective.
Also, big men like Garnett, Duncan, and Shaq, while they have high Usage percentages, they are not comparatively as high as their PER and they need a lower Usage% to achieve the same PER as a ‘shooter’ like lebron or Wade. This is because they can take high % shots and grab rebounds.
You can’t logically expect lebron and Wade to be on the same team and have that kind of PER. There are just not enough posessions in a game to have them achieve that. They could, but I don’t know how successful the team would be. Lets not forget that Bosh will need his shots too. What you have shown is that the common caveat people had of this team, that there may not be enough balls to go around, is entirely possible and not at all out of the question.

indeed!!!
What a unique and interesting situation this presents for the Heat coaching staff and the players themselves. What I attempting to demonstrate was the exact nature of how rare James and Wade truly are and to have them on the same team is quite unlike anything we’ve ever seen before in the history of the league. It is going to be very exciting!!!

I think the “not enough balls to go around” argument is generally made by people thinking they can judge players by stats…(not implying anything)
PER is a contradictory stat in my opinion – guards and guys with the ball in their hands (due to usage) are more likely to have a higher PER.
This team will be lethal if they execute – as Lebron was quoted recently – the shots they he/Wade/Bosh used to “force” or “create” because they were the “man” on the team shouldn’t occur if they execute. They have multiple options on each play that they hopefully utilise to increase their execution.
What I hope is that this translates into Lebron not isolating so much and throwing up contested three’s and long jumpshots as he can work more without the ball (and maybe finally develop a post game – seriously how could Paul Pierce guard him in the post?). It should also mean that DWade similarly doesn’t have to rely on as many contested 3’s and can operate more one-on-one when driving as weakside defence doesn’t want to leave their man (Lebron, Bosh, Miller…). Bosh should benefit from teams not being able to double him in the post as much with perimeter guys spreading the floor, he will also benefit when Lebron or Wade do drive and the weakside defence “helps” freeing Bosh up.
Not to mention the mismatches these guys can all force running the pick and roll.
Anyway I think we need to disregard all previous stats as it will be the efficiency by which they play which will determine their success – not their likelihood of replicating previous PER totals playing together…

stats are fun!
…but they can most certainly mislead. the best TEAM has won the NBA title every year that i can remember. it is, indeed, a team sport. what i was trying to illustrate was just how special this team promises to be. usage, for example, is a ridiculous stat. however, it does show who dominates play, who is capable of impacting games. MJ was the best ever. his usage % indicates this nicely. the fact that we now have the second and third highest impact player in the history of the game on the same team is amazing and i cannot wait to see how coach spo adapts the offense to this.
1+3+6=5 rings
Usage I truly do not consider to be ‘impact’ but ’participation on offense. Like I pointed out, great big men can have a much lower usage # and still score as many points and have as high of a PER as a jump shooter. this is because they take High % shots in the paint, grab rebounds, and get putback baskets…so can have a higher PER in less touches.
I think that Lebron and wade will be fine together, though their PER will eventually drop. Wing players like them are best complimented by a guy inside who can clean the glass and also draw double teams in there. that is why Wade-Shaq combo was so effective. I think the key to this team will be Bosh. Bosh was always ‘the guy’ on the team as a big man. If he can be an efficient inside player with less touches to compliment Lebron/Wade, that is i feel the key to the Heat’s success.

I agree that the team can be great if they execute. I just thought that the stats put up were interesting because i fully expect the PER of both Lebron and Wade to go down at least a bit, however, I expect wade to be overall a more efficient player, which will not show on PER because it will inevitably drop because he has to also share ball control some with lebron.

Exactly – efficiency is far more important – I find it foolhardy for people to measure a player by PER or ppg etc alone. Not saying that’s what Dollar Man was doing here, I wasn’t aware that DWade and Lebron were that highly ranked all-time – I just find in general there are a lot of discussions throughout SBNation where people rely on stats alone.
Stats don’t show missed defensive assignments, screens set, shots when covered instead of finding the open man, good passes not assists because of a missed shot, boxing out, the “hockey” assist etc. It’s why guys like Varejao or Horford are missed by the general box-score reading fan. People need to stop watching the ball alone when they watch a game – check what the other guys are doing to facillitate the execution.
