Does Chris Paul to Orlando place the Magic on top of the Eastern Conference?

We all know Chris Paul is no LeBron James, but as of late CP3 has turned all eyes onto himself, managing to steal the top NBA headlines.

Many consider Paul as the best point-guard in the NBA and one couldn’t agree more with that, but will the super distributor be able to land in one of his preferred destinations before the season begins?

News first broke out stating that Paul’s first choice would be joining teams with the Knicks, but as we have all learned this offseason, new day, new rumor.

Sources have stated that CP3′s new top preferred team is the Orlando Magic.

ESPN’s Chris Broussard says that Paul pairing up with Orlando’s Dwight Howard would be a much better fit than with Amare Stoudemire in New York.

In addition, the Magic have much more to offer for New Orleans in return.

Let’s just say that New Orleans and Orlando come to an agreement in the next week or so and Vince Carter, Jameer Nelson, and a back-up are sent to the Hornets in exchange for Chris Paul and a back-up.

With the Miami Heat quickly emerging as the top favorites to come out of the East after their recent signing acquisitions, does a move in which the leagues top point-guard (Chris Paul) pairing up with the leagues top center (Dwight Howard) place the Orlando Magic on top of Miami in the Eastern Conference?

The answer to that question is yes.

Although it’s difficult to even process that Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh are on the same squad, the super powered Heat still have missing pieces.

The Bench

While Miami has managed to bring in some solid veteran talent to surround their trio, their bench simply does not match up to Orlando’s.

The Magic had arguably the league’s most productive bench last season, posting an average total of 45.6 points per game.

With the re-signing of sharp-shooter J.J. Reddick, an emerging Ryan Anderson, the big bodied Brandon Bass and Marcin Gortat, Mickael Pietrus, and distributor specialist Chris Duhon, the Magic enter the upcoming season with one of the toughest benches in the NBA.

Chris Paul

The Magic shot the most and made the most three pointers last season. With Chris Paul in command at the one spot (with a career average of 10.0 APG) the guard will be surrounded by plenty of perimeter players who can absolutely light up the trey ball.

While I’m not particularly a big fan of the Magics recent signing of Quentin Richardson, the shooter did shoot nearly 40.0 percent from beyond the three-point arc last season in Miami.

Paul is one of those rare basketball players that simply makes his teammates better when the ball is in his hands and with Rashard Lewis coming off of a down year, this could be exactly what he needs to resurrect.

Dwight Howard

Dwight Howard led the league in RPG and BPG last season, ending the year with the most double-doubles and slam dunks in the NBA.

With Howard in the paint, which player on the Miami Heat roster will be able to contain the unstoppable force?

Miami signed Zydrunas Ilgauskas recently and from the looks of things he will probably kick off the season as the teams starting center (we all knew what Dwight posted against Cleveland two seasons ago in the postseason).

Adding Chris Paul to the Orlando Magic’s roster clearly increases the teams chances of securing the top spot in the Eastern Conference, ultimately raising the organizations shot at winning their first NBA championship.

Do you think the Magic could beat the Heat for a shot at the NBA Finals if Chris Paul was added to their roster?

Here's what it boils down to, which kind of reiterates the point...

…from a quantitative standpoint, Miami would have a 3 to 2 edge on superstars over Orlando, but the Magic would have the two best players on the two most important positions in basketball. Historically, a PG-C duo with that kind of talent has been lethal for opposing NBA teams (Consider Cousy-Russell or Magic-Kareem).

But, just as importantly, if that pairing took place next season, Paul and Howard would be in their age 25 seasons while LeBron would be 26, Bosh 26, and Dwyane Wade 29. Why is this important? Because while the Heat trio could be at the peak of their powers now (especially with Wade), Paul and Howard may not even be there yet.

but also, for the sake of argument. all the guys on the heat signed 6 year deals. That puts all of them well over 30 and puts wade in his mid 30s by the end. If Howard and CP3 played together for 6 more years, you would have 2 guys for their whole prime. Lebron may break down earlier than expected, maybe around 31. This sometimes happens with guys that come right out of HS because they play 4 years in the pros instead of in college.

What it boils down to is the other players around them. The supporting cast in Orlando if FAR superior.

A dangerous team alright...

Bit if our Miami Heat would jell together and be like Michael Jordan’s dual 3-peat Chicago Bulls, with LeBron , Wade, and Bosh leading a savvy group of veterans who will properly play their roles and step up when they need to, I think our Heat will be very capable of toppling the Magic. But honestly, we need a power-based center to battle Dwight Howard and the likes of Kendrick Perkins and Andew Bynum. Why did we let go of Jermaine O’Neal? I was expecting him to be retained!

Can Dexter Pittman battle those experienced young centers? It’s a very long reach if you ask me.

This would've been nice...

C – Jermaine O’Neal (but he’s with Boston)
PF – Chris Bosh
SF – LeBron James
SG -Dwyane Wade
PG -Keyon Dooling (but he’s with Milwaukee)

So this will happen…
C – Zydrunas Ilgauskas
PF – Chris Bosh
SF – LeBron James
SG -Dwyane Wade
PG – I don’t know… (maybe Mario Chalmers????)

If Chris Paul joins Orlando...

He may be bitter about LeBron James not choosing CP3 to join his new team. Paul should not have chosen to re-sign with the Hive. What good is loyalty to a team that cannot cultivate a very good culture of family and winning at the same time?

What it comes down too...

is who will guard Wade, Bron, and Bosh?!? Rashard Lewis, Quintin Richardson, and JJ Reddick will NOT be able to guard Wade, Bron, and Bosh. What would make Orlando think they’d be able to compete with us?!?

Also...

With Wade, Bron, and Bosh attacking the rim the whole game, Dwight is just gonna be getting in foul trouble and end up being ineffective just as he was during the playoffs. I think the Bobcats and Larry Brown did a great job of exposing Dwight….right??

Rashard is not going to guard Bosh, D-Howard likely will be, or at least playing a lot of Help D. Vince Carter will likely be guarding Wade most often and he is still a very capable defender. Quentin Richardson can’t guard lebron, because almost no one can, but he is a very solid defender overall. Not many people can guard the Wade, and even less Lebron. that is why there will likely be a lot of rotation and a lot of Help D. The Magic have 3 G/Fs who are 6’6’’ ish and all play good D. I also think Stanley Robinson will surprise many as a D specialist. He has great athleticism and Mobility for a combo forward, great wingspan, and is polished in a man D scheme.

BECAUSE NOBODY PLAYS 48 MINUTES A GAME!!!!!!

You HAVE to have complimentary players to win, case and point Lebron in Cleveland! Orlandos’ bench is too deep for miami, now i’m not saying that Orlando will come out of the East over Miami or vise-versa, i’m just saying STOP handing the title over to Miami. NOBODY has played a game yet, who knows if that egomonster can even work? There are only so many shots to go around ya know?
Anyways I am VERY excited to see how this season plays out, and ALWAYS remember L.A. is still the team to beat……

Easy

The heat are still the better team. Flat out. No other explaination necessary. Look at the teams. I do think they’d be close games tho.

I honestly can’t believe how many homer fans there are. I thought this was an interesting topic but did not expect there to be so much blind optimism of the Heat.

Yes, Lebron and Wade will be hard to guard, but Pietrus, Carter, and Quentin Richardson are all good defenders who are all 6’6’’-6’7’’ range with good length and the ability to defend the 2 or the 3 solidly. None of these guys alone can guard Lebron or Wade effectively, but if you rotate them a lot, it can be successful. Rotating solid defenders on Lebron has slowed him down in the past. They also have a rookie SF/PF named Stanley Robinson who has great size, length, athleticism, and quickness. He has a lot of great physical tools, plus was a shut down defender in college. He is 6’9’’ and could be useful at defending Lebron.

Orlando also has a Plethora of big Forwards/Centers who have excellent shot blocking ability and can defend in the post or defend the weakside and control the basket area. Obviously they have Dwight Howard, but they also have Gortat who has elite wingspan and great shot blocking ability, and they have a natural shot blocker who blocked shots well in college in Daniel Orton.

Miami will end up relying too much on their Big 3 while Orlando can beat you a variety of ways at this point. They can go inside to Howard, or Outside to richardson. They are much more balanced at this point than Miami, and even without CP3, they would still put up a good effort against Miami and in a playoff series, I see it at least going to 6, quite possibly 7. CP3 gives them that dimension of a shutdown defender at the PG position and is an elite passer and shooter. While Nelson is good, he doesn’t have the passing ability or D of CP3.

Orlando may not be better with CP3…this is all speculation and you can’t say anything for certain. However, they can make an excellent case for being better if CP3 was there.

thank you for actually showing a non-biased opinion, and for not riding the bandwagon
