Gaining more appreciation for the team Pat Riley has put together

When it came out yesterday that the Carlos Arroyo was going to be returning to the Heat, it got me thinking about our roster.  Carlito makes 13 guys signed, sealed and ready to go for the 2010-11 season.  13 guys that could very well be considered as one of the best rosters of all-time when all is said and done.

Arroyo coming back got me to thinking about all the returning players from the Heat's team of last season.  Looking at just those guys, I realized that there is a pretty decent team there, considering that its just 7 guys.  Here are the returnees: D-Wade, Arroyo, Udonis Haslem, James Jones, Joel Anthony, Mario Chalmers and Jamaal Magloire

Obviously not a ‘scary' team to face, but that's a pretty damn good group of guys that Pat Riley decided to bring back.  It's a great foundation to build around, and I think its safe to say that Riley has done the best possible job in the history of making teams when thinking about who he brought in to play around those guys.

Star-divide

Now looking at the free agent class that Super-Pat brought in...it's a list that any NBA team would drool over if you told them they had a chance of doing what Riley did.  Pffft....the first two guys on the list would be more then enough for any team out there.  Hell, just one of those two would make for a very successful off-season.

LeBron James, Chris Bosh...both are considered by many to be the best at their respective positions; or if not the best then damn close to it.  Just the fact that they are both in the discussion is enough for me.  Adding ‘just' those two guys (or even one of them) to the returning cast of Heat players puts Miami in instant contention to come out of the East every year.

Riley and Micky Arison were far from done, and it's looking at these moves when I began to really understand how special of a thing we are all witnessing down here.  At this point, looking at the roster we see Wade, Bosh and LeBron along with the remaining team from 2009; Haslem, Chalmers, Anthony, Magloire, Arroyo and Jones.

Add to that the sharpshooter that I've been hoping for Riley to bring in for the last 2 seasons...Mike Miller.  I wasn't specifically asking for Miller, but since the 08-09 season all I've wanted was for the Heat to add a consistent outside shooter to knock down the open looks that Dwyane Wade provides when doing his thing.  The looks are going to be even more open now that King James and the Boshinator are in town.

So at this point, the 10 guys I've mentioned would be more then enough for any team to think very strongly about making a run at the Larry O'Brian trophy.  However, we all know that Riley wasn't done yet.  What's that old saying?  ‘The rich get richer'.   Yeah...the Heat definitely falls under that category after the July they've had.

I'm sure that the majority of Heat fans would be perfectly happy with the front line of Chris Bosh, Joel Anthony, Udonis Haslem and Jamaal Magloire.  Miami wasn't stopping there though, actively pursuing and eventually signing a pair of very productive big guys that add even more depth to their already solid 4 and 5 positions.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas is a 14-year veteran who has proven his worth in the NBA throughout his career.  He should step right in and with the decrease in minutes and pressure to produce, I imagine that we'll get the best out of ‘The Igloo' on a consistent basis.

Still not finished, Riley then brought in Juwan Howard who is coming off of a very productive season with Portland.  This is a guy who played in over 70 games last year, starting 27 of them, and doing a damn good job.  Now he'll be playing behind Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem while Ilgauskas will join Joel Anthony and Jamaal Magloire in the Heat's amazingly deep power rotation.

These veterans aren't shy about saying the reason they want to come to Miami and play for minimum contracts is because they want a shot at a ring before retiring.  The issue I have with that is some skeptics are trying to take credit away from Pat Riley for those players choosing to join the Heat.

Pat may not have been using the same negotiating tactics that he brought out for LeBron and Bosh, but he is still 100% the reason why each and every one of these free agents came to Miami.  It's because of Riley that we have the ‘Miami Thrice', Mike Miller, Udonis Haslem, etc.  Without making all that happen, Ilgauskas and Howard probably would have gone elsewhere to chase their title.

Whether he spoke 200 words to these free agents or just 2, Pat Riley deserves every single ounce of credit for creating this team.  Many would say that Riley's legacy was already golden, that he was one of the most important people in NBA history for everything he has done since coming into the league in 1967.

The 2010-11 version of the Heat is just the latest thing on a long list of accomplishments during Riley's career, but don't think that he is done here.  Miami's roster is going to change somewhat frequently over the next few years as the role players will come and go, and there is no reason to think that Pat wont continue to ‘wow' us with the quality of talent he places around our ‘big 3'.

Awesome post David.
Pat Riley has really outdone himself this year.
It frustrates me that people are still viewing the Heat’s offseason so negatively – I guarantee that most of it is jealousy, which team would seriously balk at adding Lebron, Bosh, Igloo and Miller…?
I still think this needs to be viewed positively – guys sacrificing dollars for the team, individual accolades for the team and choosing to play with who they want.
Pat Riley made it happen – I think other execs are scared because they don’t want to cede control to players determining their own fates…regardless the quality of role players assembled, both for their oncourt talent and offcourt character, is a very good barometer for the way the Heat have always conducted themselves under Pat Riley.

Your right

the hate is all jealousy. Realgm.com had a poll rating the supporting cast Riley has come up with and like 15 percent voted F.

by #1Heatfan on Jul 22, 2010 8:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Yep just jealousy-

That Riley was the one who got it done and no one else could. Come on – all these GM’s/other teams fans etc complaining – if this happened to their team – they wouldn’t be complaining then. I just think it’s all funny now.

Nice! But the backcourt of our Heat is still quite gloomy to be honest. There’s no true point guard in the roster. Keyon Dooling signed a 2 year contract with the Milwaukee Bambis. Luke Ridnour is with the Timberpups. Anyone got someone in mind who is considered an ample and very capable passing point guard who should be signed?

Does Jason Williams count? Wish Chris Paul could join our team, but its just wishful thinking and dreaming the impossible dream.

by Rasetsu on Jul 22, 2010 8:59 AM EDT reply actions

Backcourt is fine at the moment – this is a flexible team with multiple playmakers. All the guys know how to pass.
It would be more of an issue if our offense was running through the post – as it is currently it will be running through the wings.
As long as Mario can provide defence (he can) hit the open looks from outside (he should) and minimise turnovers (possible) it won’t be a real weakness – much like when the Bulls had Paxson/Kerr/Harper as their “PG”…

Carlos Arroyo is a good PG. But honestly, he’s more suited as a backup PG.
Based on the Free Agent Tracker, whom do you think should our Heat sign to the PG slots?

Acie Law
Ronald Murray (could be a starter)
Jannero Pargo (not so sure he is good as a starter)
Chucky Atkins
Rafer Alson (bring him back?)
Jason Williams (bring him back?)
Earl Boykins (could be a nice addition)
Anthony Johnson (not so sure he is good as a starter)
Eddie House (as long as he stops chucking those 3-pointers)

I would love to beat the Knicks with Amare, CP3 and Melo on the team together. That would be so sweet.

LeBron haters, shut up! That article's for you!

Very nice article!

Magic Johnson needs to shut his pietrap coz he was very lucky to be drafted by the Fakers and win a title in his rookie season! And he’s got an All-Star team with our GM Pat Riley leading Magic’s Showtime Fakers!

If Magic got drafted by… let’s say, the Atlanta Hawks… and he hasn’t won any titles ‘til his 7th season, man he’d go bananas over his plight and bolt that team for a contender with tons of all-star caliber players!

Only Michael Jordan has the right to say he won’t play with contemporary all-stars coz he’s the greatest ever! He needed only Scottie Pippen, the only other all-star caliber player in the Bulls Dynasty, to gut out those 6 championships. The rest played better coz MJ23 made them play better.

I don't understand people complaining about our PG position..

Chalmers started 82 games as a rookie, with nobody around him but Wade and some crap, and we made the playoffs. He’s PLENTY good enough to start alongside Wade/LeBron/Bosh. He won’t be handling the ball much, he won’t be running the pick and rolls or creating shots for others. He’ll defend, he’ll be an extra ball-handler, and he’ll shoot open 3’s. LeBron and Wade will be do the majority of the ball-handling and offense-starting. PG is not an issue when you have this roster.

Saying all that, I still would like to see LeBron running point. I think it creates serious match-up problems, while not sacrificing anything defensively. Starting lineup of LeBron, Wade, Miller, Bosh, Anthony is HUGE (smallest is 6’4 Wade, nobody else shorter than 6’8). who guards LeBron at the point? You have to switch a forward to him, meaning both guards now have to check Wade and Miller (who is 6’8). LA is the only team with a starting lineup that could have a chance, switching Kobe to Miller and Artest to LeBron, but that leaves Steve Blake on Wade (MISMATCH!!). Chalmers can come off the bench when we go to a more traditional lineup, but LBJ has the skills to play point, and he’s a problem for opposing teams when he’s at the 1. Remember, Magic was 6’9 at the point.

good post

That is the line up i hope to see from the start. Why bring in Miller to open up the floor from the bench, makes no sense. Lebron could lead the league in assists with Wade, Bosh, and Miller finishing the plays. And yes i do think Joel should start. He would be perfect fit. We all know he is undersized but he reminds me of my Favorite player ZO. well that would be Zo post kidney transplant. He protects the rim, I hate seeing centers afraid of getting posterized and not trying to protect the rim at all cost. Zo NEVER backed down, and neither does Anthony.

Off the bench Arroyo, Chalmers, JJ, Haslem, and Big Z. I like the depth Riley has added, check that I love what he has done.

Yes,

I agree. I want Chalmers to start and think he will play very well off the ball with those three. But, I want to get J Will that way when either Lebron or Wade rest, J Will goes in and we always have 2 playmakers on the court.

Barnes signed with the lakers huh?

Now then the other two roster spots should be filled by Hasbrouck and Rasual Butler.

RE: Chris Paul

Hornets have him under contract. He said where he wants to go, but they don’t have to oblige. Since all you can be sure on him is that he’s an expiring contract, I say the Hornets should send him to Toronto for expiring contracts. Or somewhere else equally undesirable.

CP doesn't have a No-Trade clause...

Apparently there has been a further statement whittling his choices to Mavs, Blazers, Knicks, Magic – not LAL…

I’ve been checking the Charlotte Bobcats SBNation blog and they seem to think they have had deal in the works for CP3 for a few days now…

I don’t think so either – only way they do is if he commits to not resigning and they push him out the door at the All Star break. He is pretty much the face of the franchise, they would want something more than expiring contracts.
They do have a good backup in Collison though – if I was GM I would be shopping him for a decent player to help them, considering their roster holes they don’t have the luxury of Collison as a backup.

Bobcats make no sense

He wants to go to a contender. Plus, the Bobcats have no attractive pieces to offer. I hope he goes to NY (Galinarri or however you spell it and picks could be attractive to NO) so we can have another great rivalry. Remember, NO doesn’t need to get a pg back because thay have Collison.
