Carlos Arroyo confirms return to Heat

Carlos Arroyo is going to be playing for the Heat again, adding depth and smart-playing stability to the point guard position.  He is flying back from his native Puerto Rico and expects to formally sign a new contract sometime on Thursday.  Said Arroyo of his return:

"Looking forward to a championship!!!  Excited!!!!"

Arroyo will be the 2nd point guard and 13th player on the Heat's 2010-11 roster, but Miami is expected to add another guard before training camp.  Summer League guys Kenny Hasbrouck and Patrick Beverly are possibilities for the job, as is former Heat PG Jason Williams. At this point, regardless of who else comes aboard...Mario Chalmers is the favorite to start.

Yes - J Will being the last piece.

And yes, I am a fan of both too – let’s have our cake and eat it too. I’d rather J Will retire now than have to play for anyone else.

Because when the Celtics won the championship Rajon Rondo was their PG...

Rondo Stats Per 36 min during the Big 3’s championship year:
13 points 6 assist 26% 3 point shooting

Carlos Arroyo Per 36 min last year WITHOUT a Big 3:
10 points 5 assists 28% 3 point shooting

Seems like a fine signing to me since the Celtics won a championship that year with a similar PG stats =)

by ap3604 on Jul 21, 2010 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

a) Arroyo is cheap (probably…maybe MLE) and could actually be signed by the heat considering the lack of money

b) Arroyo was on the team last year and started in the last 21 games, started with Wade last year, and will have chemistry with him and Chalmers (and other guys from last yrs team)

c) had the 2nd Highest A/TO ratio and turnovers could be a problem this year.

A agree, but..

I think those stats are a little misleading. He didn’t have many turnovers because he tends to make very simple passes. He also doesn’t have 3 point range. Arroyo is an excellent mid- range shooter, but we already have Haslem and Big Z shooting from mid- range. So, he is not a great playmaker, and he doesn’t shoot from three. Even at 35, Williams can do both much better. However, I Arroyo is an excellent third pg.

by #1Heatfan on Jul 23, 2010 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I think those stats are a little misleading. He didn’t have many turnovers because he tends to make very simple passes.

How is that misleading? he has always been a good ballhandler and I would rather have a guy who does the easy passes than someone who is always trying the risky passes. The point is, with him the offense is very efficient. He takes a lot of high percentage shots and his ‘easy passes’ also end up often being high percentage shots.

He is not a great 3 point shooter but he can make the shot occasionally…Its not like Williams is that great of a 3 point shooter. He is not a good shooter in general.

I disagree and think he is a much better playmaker than Williams who is oftentimes to wild IMO for a point guard. He tries too much for the flashy play instead of the right play. He is a low percentage shooter who takes way to many 3s for just an average 3 point shooter and tries the flashy shot instead of the smart shot. I will take flashy over smart any day.

by bross09 on Jul 23, 2010 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Look at the numbers

Williams averaged a little more assists per game in a few less min per game. And he averaged 1 extra turnover every 4 games. Yes arroyo is efficient, but he will always be playing off the ball and he can’t hit a 3 point shot. It is hard to play off the ball if you can’t shoot from long distance. J Will isn’t a great 3 point shooter, but he is much better than Arroyo.

by #1Heatfan on Jul 23, 2010 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

J Will isn’t a great 3 point shooter, but he is much better than Arroyo.

statistically, he actually isn’t. Arroyo also doesn’t take as many 3s. For a player that relies on shooting, less than 40% from the field in a career is pretty awful. Jason Williams takes way to many bad/low percentage shots to really be a viable option on offense. Arroyo is overall a better option on Offense. He can hit the 3, but not all that great…but Williams is not much better.

Williams is a better player in transition or on the fast break but Arroyo is a better shooter anytime else, especially in the clutch. Like I said, Williams is flashy and the stats back it up. He averages 4.5 assists for every bad pass while Arroyo averages over 10, ergo Williams has many more bad passes/turnovers.

Arroyo is just a better player in areas that aren’t always noticed. people notice 3 point shots and fancy passes. People don’t recognize the ability to draw fouls, solid rebounding from the PG position, the ability to make good decisions and not make bad passes, the ability to hit the midrange. Outside of transition, Arroyo is by far the superior player

Arroyo disappointed me in the playoffs

After the last stretch of regular season games, I really thought the Heat had something in Arroyo. It must have just been our demonstrably weak late-season schedule, because he got thoroughly outplayed by Rondo in the playoffs. Obviously, he was outmatched, but Arroyo didn’t even come close to his effectiveness in the games prior to the Celtics. Arroyo just really didn’t show up. (Same story with Jermaine O’Neal, for that matter.)

I’ll admit the spark of a good point guard seems to be there for Arroyo, but I’m afraid he’ll be exposed again come playoff time. I’m more keen on giving Chalmers a shot — despite the fact that Chalmers’s ball-handling scares me to death.

He just played so timid.

by jamesyj on Jul 26, 2010 4:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Jason willias was actually much worse for orlando in the playoffs last year…and for his career. He consistently shoots worse in the playoffs, passes worse, and committs more turnovers. He is a significantly worse playoff player and just had his worst playoff series of his career last year.

I agree chalmers should get some more playing time in the playoffs though.

Williams: 38% career from 3 point land, 6+ Assists career. Enough said.

One year, maybe 2 – he teaches and mentors, wins another ring and retires. Done.

38% career from 3???

No way. Hes like 38% career from the field in general which is abysmal. I think his 3’s are more like 34% career he was at 38% this year

He’s not some knockdown 3 pt shooter. He hits most of his in transition. Arroyo isn’t a 3 pt threat but he is excellent from midrange

by kazam92 on Jul 21, 2010 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

the guy really doesn’t understand stats…he thought 2nd best A/TO ratio in the NBA was bad…

Williams was 38% from 3, last season. Even on good teams, he has never had that kind of shooting …I do take it with a grain of salt b/c he has never been close (and is under 33 for his career) AND he was not used much as a player.

This is why one stat doesn’t tell the story: last year per 36 minutes, Williams had career lows in points, shots taken, 3s taken, and times gotten to the line. He was a bench player not used that much on offense because of the weapons in orlando. Because of that, he was often left somewhat unguarded because of the other guys on the court and the fact he would often go up against other bench players.

Even with the big 3, I don’t think he will get as many open loks. Orlando is much deeper so they have more weapons off the bench to take the focus off of Williams…He also bombed in the playoffs…watch that shooting % plummet.

J-will is no mentor

what makes you think he can mentor anyone? this guy is immature still at his age. he can’t play D, so he’s useless down the stretch during games, just like back in ‘06 when GP had to be used more then he should have been because of J-will inability to D up. yes i’m one of the very few in here that doesn’t believe we’ll coast into a championship, i actually think we will have to earn it because this team will have a huge target on its back in every game they play.

i don’t care of about career numbers, thats something to look at and reflect back on, i want the confidence that he can help this team and when you have 2 great passing perimeter players on the team i would rather have a guy who can handle the rock and knock down the outside jumpshot, which J-will cant do consistently.

Arroyo and Chalmers should be a good 1-2 combo at PG during the season. i don’t know who is going to be the 3rd PG, if its J-will then thats fine but 3rd pg usually don’t get playing time so i can’t see him coming if he really wants to play unless he’ll be happy sitting the bench.

Dirty Job

Why you have to go and roast Jwill like that? I’m glad you did though, cause somebody had to do it. The way people on this site are screaming for him to be signed is baffling. You would think he was Chris Paul or something.

by Put Me on the Bandwagon on Jul 22, 2010 5:43 AM EDT up reply actions

That's why me mentors D-A

He was doted by Jerry West as having the most raw basketball talent of ANY of the players he has ever seen come into the league in ’98.

Legend Hubie Brown taught him how to control his game = hence the ’06 championship backcourt. We you even alive back then Halo? Probably still in diapers.

by Metro Dade Vice on Jul 22, 2010 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

its 2010

stop living in the past, raw skils don’t mean anything if you can’t put it together. 06 backcourt i remember it being Gary Payton and D-Wade not J-will, i remember him sitting most of the bench in the 4th quarter because he was unreliable most of the time.

by HALO_86 on Jul 22, 2010 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly. Williams is better but is not a very in control player on offense.

by Metro Dade Vice on Jul 22, 2010 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Glad to have Arroyo back...

He may not be flashy but he is a steady PG who doesn’t make mistakes and hits shots well from mid range – that goes a long way I think.

I would prefer for our last signature to be JWill – but would prefer more for it to not be McGrady, Iverson, Stackhouse or Hughes…

except maybe i would take T-mac only if he understands he’s going to be deep on the bench and wont get any min.

i hope we don’t sign: AI, that guy deserves to end up with no championships.

Problem I see with T-Mac is that after the way he kicked up a storm in Houston over playing time which got him shipped to the Knicks I don’t see him being OK with 10mins a game…

assuming

he signs knowing he’ll be riding the bench, i’m ok with it, if he comes here thinking that he’s going to battle for min. then i would pass. i think we’re set with our rotation: Z, Anothony, Bosh, Haslem, James, Miller, Wade, Arroyo, Chalmers. the rest are on the bench unless foul troubles, injuries, or blowouts.

by HALO_86 on Jul 21, 2010 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely – consideration for remaining spots should be to develop young guys or veteran presence/mentors…

Unlikely the heat get jwill

There only 2 spots left now. While i would have no problem with stackhouse and jwill on the team, id rather have young guys not dressing and practicing with the team. Only 12 guys are active per game anyways.

Anthony/Z/Magloire/Pitman
Bosh/Haslem/Howard
Lebron/Miller/Jones
Wade
Chalmers/Arroyo

The way i see it now is the guys who dont dress are Howard or Pitman and the 2 other guys they sign. Might as well be summer league guys.

The Heat will sign one more guard and it wont be J-Will. Just not enough minutes at the PG position to split between Rio, Arroyo and a guy like J-Will. Going to have to be Hasbrouck.

I still would not be surprised to see him get signed for a 1 year deal.

He had a great year last year until the Boston series and has the respect and confidence of D Wade, Miller and Haslem. I think that Pat may just want someone else who has won a title with him and D Wade giving some insight to the younger players while honing their passing and catching skills in practice almost daily.

We’ll see – but either way: GO HEAT and J Will: you’re a stud!

Remember what kind of passer he turned Vlade Divac into after nearly taking his off a dozen times his first 2 years in the league with no look passes!

That can be Bosh, Pittman, Howard, and the list goes on.

I don’t think there are but about 3-4 people in the NBA that can pass like J Will, and no one else that would ever pull it off in a game other than maybe CP3

by Kenny F'ing Powers on Jul 22, 2010 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

yeah…he can make the flashy passes but he also makes the flashy turnovers too. I don’t like a guy who tries too much to make the flashy play instead of the high percentage play. J-Will is not that good of a 3 point shooter but has always taken way too many shots from there,

J-Will or K-Has?

I think it may be a toss up between Kenny Hasbrouck and Jason Williams. If Jason Williams gets signed, its best to let Kenny Hasbrouck refine his skills in the D-League.

Jarvis Varnado may be better off in the D-League for skill refinement.

Miami Herald also reports that Eddie House and (GULP! OH NO! NOT HIM!) Kwame Brown are very interested to join our Miami Heat.
