Heat sign big men Joel Anthony and Dexter Pittman

With each passing day it seems the Heat are adding pieces to their soon to be filled roster.  Today the team announced a couple of ‘big' signings, locking up centers Joel Anthony and draft pick Dexter Pittman.  I was hoping the Heat would bring back Joel because he has improved in each of his 3 NBA seasons, and there is no reason to think he wont continue to do so.

The shock-blocking specialist was the lone member of the Heat to fall under the Larry Bird rule, so Miami was able to offer him a 5-year deal worth $18 million.  Considering his upside, I think it's a great deal.  Just over $3 mil a year for a guy who could very well end up the Heat's starting center in the upcoming season.  I have to think he will be due to the amount he's making, which is almost triple what he made last season.

During his tenure with the Heat Joel has grown by leaps and bounds.  He started out as a big guy who could only block shots and had no hands, but has developed into a solid, all-around player.  His offensive touch in the paint still can be improved, but there's no reason to think that he wont continue to progress the way he has the past couple seasons.

Star-divide

The Heat also announced the signing of rookie center Dexter Pittman to a 3-year deal.  Pittman has been participating with the team during the Summer League, though he's missed the last two games with a bruised toe.  He hadn't been doing particularly well anyway, but he still could use the experience.

By the end of the weekend the Heat's front line should be all but finished being loaded up.  Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Juwan Howard and Jamaal Magloire are all expected to be locked up at some point in the next day or so.  They are all going to provide some great depth behind Chris Bosh, Udonis Haslem and Joel Anthony.

Friday also brought the formal announcement from Pat Riley that the Heat has signed Mike Miller, saying that bringing the swingman to the Heat was "a match made in heaven".  Miller comes in with a pretty nice track record, winning Rookie of the Year in '01 and Sixth Man of the Year in '06.  And FYI...Miller will wear #13 for the Heat.

SUMMER LEAGUE UPDATE

The Heat moved to 3-1 last night with a convincing 78-58 win over the Summer League struggling Milwaukee Bucks, who dropped to 0-4.  Shavlik Randolph led the Heat with 18 points and has accumulated 20 boards in the three games he's played in.

Kenny Hasbrouck continues to impress during the Summer League, going 4-of-7 from downtown en route to a 14-point, 4-assist night.  Hasbrouck is averaging 15 points on 52.5% shooting while grabbing 2.5 boards and 2.2 assists in the four games he's played in.

I wouldn't be surprised if either or both of these guys end up sticking with the Heat and filling out the final spots on their 15-man roster.  Only 12 players can dress, but up to 15-can travel and practice with the team during the season.

The Heat wrap up their Summer League schedule today at 6pm against Cleveland.  The game is scheduled to be broadcast live on NBA TV, and I'll have a game thread up for this one.

I'm torn on this signing...

On one hand I think to myself “WTF is going on?! 18 million for Joel?!”

But on the other hand I look at his per 36 min stats (6 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks) and think to myself how this can be an excellent Perkins type signing =]

This ^^^^

And…Anthony has game…he just needs to unleash it on the world. With Bosh getting a lot of coverage down low, Anthony and all the bigs really will be able to get some good looks.

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

Hmm

Good signing for Joe. Ben Wallace got a worst contract for his last big payday.
Pittman is a work in progress.
They should have no problem signing Garet Siler also with Magloire and Z.
Juwan Howard is a bum, stay away Juwan stay away!
Hasbrouck should stay too.
Jason Williams please!

Again, you have read my mind. I’m starting to see you are one who knows his business. Let’s hope the front office notices the 87% of Heat Fans that voted to bring Williams back.

And, yes: RIGHT

THANK YOU PAT for not letting Joel leave

I doubt we sign Siler, i know he has been playing better than Pittman but now we already have 3 centers under contract Magloire would be 4 if we sign him. 5 years for 18 mil, not that bad for what joel brings to the table.

LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!
Joel Anthony is the man

right

forgot about those 2, if Pittman doesn’t succeed it won’t be because of a lack of effort from the team, and with these mentors, all hall of famers (except Spo, for now, and Askins), Pittman is prone to have a stellar career

The thin wiht Pittman, is that it is near consensus is he's going to be a legit NBA big if he loses the weight...

…and the bright side, from a HEAT perspective, is that it is doubtful anyone in the history of the NBA is going to be given the same external motivation as this kid…if he has any desire at all, and I think he does, he’s going to be given A LOT of encouragement to lose that weight asap.

Why? Riley, Wade, & LBJ know their biggest hold up on a championship will be guarding Dwight Howard & Andrew Bynum…they are going to be giving maximum encouragement and assistance to a guy like Pittman, bc they know that even as a rookie this year, Pittman’s C defense on those guys, even if it’s just 20 minutes a game, might be the difference bn a ring and no ring….

2nd: I know if I were 22 years old, and I had LBJ, Wade, Riley, & Bosh, telling me day in and day out “We are relying on you kid, are you losing that weight? We want you to be part of our dynasty, you gotta step up kid…”

That would be some very effective motivation to lose the weight, and help the team out…dude, if I were the HEAT GM, I might hire a nutritionist to follow the kid around 24 hours a day and monitor what he eats!

Seriously, HEAT are so close to a title already, the only thing they need is to make sure they can handle Bynum & Howard…ridiculous to lose a title bc a guy like Pittman is to fat to provide effective rebounding and defensive prescence come June

completely agree with everything you said

and Pat Riley’s offseason workout program is the toughest of any in the NBA, Pittman will be in shape, if not he going to be suspended ’til he is, just like Antoine Walker, and that should be even more motivation

Pittman will

I think he is going to do great the only thang he has to do is Defend the top big men in the league and thats just two the others r ok players really. Plus with Zo training him and getting him in shape i see him being ready if its to do nothing but rebound make some blocks and hold down the paint. thats really wat we need out of him his rookie year if he do that and the trio don’t get hurt we winning the whole thang this year coming up. Pittman is strong as a bull!!!!!!! He 6"11&1/2 with great hands I love this pick. if Pat don’t make anymore moves this summer and go with the parts that we have and one or two of those summer league guys we will win because In Pat Riley I Trust!!!!!

by Dirtyt80 on Jul 17, 2010 1:59 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah I’m hoping Pittman really develops into a talented big man who can eventually defend the paint and take care of someone as good as Dwight Howard but he needs to not only lose some weight but put on some more muscle so he doesn’t get pushed around.

Hmm

J Will,Magloire and Rasual Butler now have to be signed and were good.
10 have been signed.
3 more to go.
Then of course the two reserves(likely Beverley and Siler)

by thedeeofdees on Jul 17, 2010 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

I could see the heat signing Jeremy Lin and Kenny Hasbrouck to long term contracts

and sending them down for 1 more year to sharpen their games and then next season playing big minutes with the Big 3.
Most likely the last signings will be
Stack
JWill I hope
Magloire
but I really hope they somehow can get Barnes instead of Stack
