Around SBN: Champions League Preview with Jimmy Conrad

Another busy day as Heat roster continues to fill up

Yesterday the Heat added a couple more players to their quickly filling roster.  Zydrunas Ilgauskas has committed to joining the Heat and Juwan Howard is on the verge of signing as well.  Ilgauskas is going to get a lot more playing time, and he may end up starting at center for the Heat.  Howard is going to add depth to a front line that currently includes Z, Chris Bosh, Udonis Haslem and probably Joel Anthony and/or Jamaal Magloire

Ilgauskas came right out and said that he picked Miami because he felt playing here would give him the best shot at winning a title.  The deal will be a 2-year, $2.8 million contract with the 2nd year being a player option.  That way, should the Heat come right out and win the NBA championship this coming season, he can retire, stay with the Heat and chase back to back titles or opt out and maybe return to Cleveland to finish his career.  Who knows.

For now, he is ours...and that's fine by me.  What we're getting is a 35-year old center who should flourish when surrounded by the cast of characters on the Heat's roster.  He'll shoot between 45-50% from the field and will stretch the D with his range.  We might see him hit a few treys here and there as well.  Defensively what he lacks in speed he can make up for with experience, and should average over a block a game.

Star-divide

In Juwan Howard the Heat are getting another veteran who is looking to win a ring.  He proved last season that he still has a bit of basketball left in his system, stepping up and playing some very good minutes for an injury depleted Portland front line.

To give you an idea of what he is capable of at this point of his career, here are his stats from last season: He averaged 6.0 points on 50.4% shooting, grabbing 4.6 boards and 2.7 assists in 22 minutes a game.  Also, he was ranked 16th in the NBA in offensive rebounds per 48 minutes.  How's that sound for your probable 3rd string power forward?

I'll quickly mention the Mike Miller situation from earlier.  It was reported that teams are pressuring him to sign elsewhere, and that Miller even said his deal with the Heat was not yet done.   Later on it came out of ‘Camp Miller' that he fully plans on signing with the Heat and that the hold-up was due to a ‘completion of physicals and other paperwork'.  No worries, folks.

SUMMER LEAGUE UPDATE

After a late three-pointer saved the Heat in their first Summer League game, they were burned by one last night.  Brian Chase hit a long trey with 12.6 seconds left, putting the Warriors up for good in a low-scoring forgettable game.

For the Heat, Kenny Hasbrouck had his 2nd straight good game, scoring 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-3 from downtown.  In the two Summer League games, he has hit 15-of-25 from the field and led the Heat in both points and minutes.

Jarvis Varnado had another solid game, scoring 9 points and grabbing 6 boards while adding a block (of course) in 20 minutes.  Dexter Pittman is still finding his way, but turnovers and fouls are making the adjustment difficult.  In the two games Pittman has scored 12 points on 2-of-10 shooting, with 7 rebounds, 8 personal fouls and 7 turnovers in about 20 minutes a game.

Jon Scheyer started the game strong but had to be taken to a local hospital after sustaining a lacerated right eyelid.  Hopefully the injury doesn't keep him out long because I was really hoping he'd impress during Summer League and win one of the final spots on the roster.  At this point though, it seems Kenny Hasbourck is the favorite to make the squad.

Next game is tonight at 10:30 against Detroit.

Kobe will be 32 in August...

and has played 45,000 minutes of NBA basketball; MJ hit the 43,000 mark when he was 36; the wall is coming soon and when it happens, it usually looks like it happens overnight; it was like this with Shaq—I love Shaq and it was tough seeing him in Phoenix—no explosion on the block. For Kobe, first the lift goes—I saw him lay a few in last year he normally would have dunked, then the ability to play defense goes and then….The Heat have the present and will have the future.

Ilgauskas is going to get a lot more playing time,

How much do you think that amounts to?

I’d say he’ll get around 25 min a game. Considering that last season he lost a lot of minutes to Shaq, and that he’ll have a less demanding job here in Miami, I’m very excited about what he can bring to the table down here. Not just Z, but a lot of the guys we’re bringing in are going to do well due to how many more open looks they’ll get.

About the roster

How many of the summer roster guys are we able to sign? Because judging from all the depth we’ve added, I’m sure we have quite a few guys that will probably retire by 1 or 2 years. That leaves even more work to be done for the next few seasons.

By the way I will be darn happy by the crazy idea of mine if Dorell Wright rejoins us in 3 years time when his contract is up. :D

12 years in the NBA, several franchise leading titles

but no ring.

You guys had better win a ring for Z. I can’t bear to see him retire a broken man.

I'm a diehard Cavs fan, proud to say I never owned a LeBron jersey.

Hmm

Hasbrouck better be on this roster.
I don’t want Pittman but that 6’ 11 kid Garet Siler?
He is a beast.
6’ 11 and 3001bs.
Perfect to bang wit Dwight Howard,Bynum,Yao,Camby etc.
At backup twp guard I would go with either Raja Bell or Antoine Wright.
Barnes may be money hungry and as much as I would want Rasual Butler to return to the team that drafted him he too is wanna demand Mike Miller type money.
We do not have 5 mil to offer him.
Heat dynasty roster:
Hasbrouck,Wade,Lesidekick,Bosh,Magloire
bench:Chalmers.Raja Bell,Mike Miller,Haslem,Z,Garet Siler,Juwan Howard,Beverley

Pat Riley

Our team is finally coming together thanks to our Mastermind. Sign a few rookies, a couple more bigs, and add some point guards to the mix.

glad to see the Miller update

I was having trouble buying the stories that were stemming from his lack of a sig on the contract, especially after what Tellem said in his article about the signing.

I’ve surprisingly enjoyed those Summer League games.

Yep, the summer league games are pretty interesting so far

everyone seems to be working hard…

I’m not too worried about Pittman, he’s putting up some good effort and it takes a while to adjust (especially for people his size). Kenny Hasbourck has looked real comfortable and smooth throughout, but I also like Patrick Beverly, I know he’s turned it over quite a bit, but who on that team hasnt, he has a real good quality I like about him. Varnado also played real well and I really like him.

Haha, last week we had only one player under contract and everyone was worried if we’d be able to fill up the team, but now it seems there wont be enough room for some that deserve to be, hehe.

if the howard signing prevents joel or jamaal to come back then im againts the howard signing. i want to mike miller signing already! hmm found out q-rich was offered a spot on the heat but he decline i was wondering if we wanted him. i liked him last year. and i wonder who we targeting for the pg spot.

by Adrian Posueloz on Jul 14, 2010 10:56 AM EDT reply actions

ya i dont like this talk about juwan howard signing

we dont need an over-the-hill 3rd string power forward. we need defensive bodies at the center position, namely anthony and magloire. unless theres someone out there who would be an upgrade to those guys

Just want to comment on the summer league game

I only watched the first half, but I love what I saw from Pat Beverley. He plays great defense, and hustles. He dove after every loose ball. The anouncers were using Wade’s old motto “fall down 7 times, get up 8” to describe him, I like the competitiveness and hope he gets a spot this season.

I Really Hope So!!!

I Love How Patrick Beverley play he will bring every play I really hope he makes the roster and help out this year

by Dirtyt80 on Jul 14, 2010 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

screw dampier

We need to sign Joel Anthony. Damn it man we need to keep him. I know he is undersized but the man can play D. His offense is improving but his D is his money maker. Howard can be the 15th man in a suit and get a free ring if he wants, but not at the cost of Anthony. Magloire only played in every other 5th game for 5 minutes but the Enforcer did do his thing whenever his number was called. He wants to stay apart of the family.

LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!
Joel Anthony is the man

I love Joel

but I think his defense is over rated due to his shot blocking. Yes, he goes all out but, in my opinion, his size really hurts him. He isn’t a great rebounder and is at a huge disadvantage playing defense. He is great coming of the bench and changing the game by blocking shots. But, in my opinion, we could really use Dampier’s size in the starting lineup. However, he will most likely want much more than the min.

by #1Heatfan on Jul 14, 2010 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Joel’s hands of stone don’t help him out much…

Dampier’s inability to realise his name is Erik not Erika and play like a bloke instead of a chick is his problem…

Hmm

Word on the street is the heat have had talks with Rasual Butler.
I would love for him to rejoin the team that drafted him.
Should have never left in the first place.
We do need a backup point guard and Butler would fit that spot nicely.
The lock down defense and shooting is a must.

by thedeeofdees on Jul 14, 2010 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

Which team do you actually support?? It’s obviously not Miami, no actual supporter of the Heat in their right mind would actually champion Magloire to start and then Butler as a backup PG…

Go back to the Valley man!!

…and btw, where are Beverly, Pittman, and Varnado in this game?

by Tetris on Jul 14, 2010 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm

Siler will develop fine.
He has played well thus far.
Pittman is garbage and Vernado has yet to play.
Beverley has yet to play also.
I don’t know why.
If Pittman plays poorly again in this game he truly sucks.
Siler is much better than Pittman though.

Pittman out w/ toe injury, Beverly out w/ leg injury, both could be back for next game

Siler could be an asset for the heat.
I would take a chance on him.

I think there is going to be an odd man out

…prolly Magloire or maybe even Joel Anthony

by Tetris on Jul 14, 2010 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm

Magloire will likely be resigned.
Joel Anthony has yet to accept the qualifying offer made by the heat.
He would be stupid to sign with a loser.
But that is his choice.
Siler better be signed aswel as Hasbrouck.
