Heat add more pieces, sign Zydrunas Ilguaskas and on verge of adding Juwan Howard

To all those people out there who said the Heat wouldn't be able to win with 3 guys and a bunch of minimum contract guys...how do you like us now?  Yesterday it was Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller.  Today its Zydrunas Ilgauskas (that's gonna be fun to spell this season) and Juwan Howard

Shortly after it came out that Big Z was going to sign with Miami, Dwyane Wade said it best in a message on Twitter; "The POWER of sacrifice is under estimated...YES.WE.DID...".  I find it funny that when the big 3 signed, there was some doubt as to how they would fill out the rest of their roster.  Now, literally just days later, they are putting together one hell of a squad.

There is a good chance that every off-season there will be a long line of free agents who will want the opportunity to come play in South Beach.  Right now that's where Ilgauskas, Juwan Howard and Jerry Stackhouse are standing.  However, it seems that Heat bouncer Pat Riley is about to let the next two in line inside Club-AAA.

Star-divide

Howard's signing isn't confirmed the way that Ilguskas' is.  While Big Z's contract is all but signed, Juwan and his agent aren't going to make that claim just yet.  Still, all signs point to both landing in Miami in the next few days.

It's known that Howard has been working with Pat Riley finalizing the deal that will bring him ‘back' to Miami 14 years after he first tried to sign with the Heat.  That deal was voided by the league due to the Heat going over the salary cap thanks to Alonzo Mourning disclosing that he had verbal agreement with Miami before Howard signed.

This time around the Heat are getting a wise veteran who has been relocated a lot over the course of his career.  After starting his career with the then Washington Bullets, he Dallas, Denver, Orlando, Houston, Dallas again, Denver again, Charlotte and Portland, where he played last season.

Shifting our focus to Ilgauskas, his deal is just hindering on whether it will be for 1-year or if there will be a 2nd year added with a player option.  This isn't the first time the Heat have courted him either.  When he was bought out by the Wizards last season after being traded by Cleveland, the Heat pushed for him to sign for their playoff run but Big Z elected to return to the Cavs.

Now he chooses to leave his home for the last 14-years in order to pursue the dream that all players have, to win a championship.  Said Z:

"It was very tough. I love Cleveland. At end the day, Miami is best place for me to win a ring"

To the Cleveland Plain Dealer: "I've been a loyal soldier for 14 years. It's time for me to go and chase my dream of winning a ring."

The contract is going to be worth $2.8 million over 2-years, with the 2nd year coming as a player option.  I suppose the mindset is that just in case the Heat don't win a championship next season, Ilgauskas wants to have another shot at it without having to worry about being a free agent again.  Makes sense.  More to come later...

Or would that just be too much?

Big fan of LeBron here,

And I’ve always loved D-Wade, though he is, admittedly, only just in my top-5 of favorite NBA stars right now. But I’ll be watching my fair share of Heat action this next year and I’m certainly ready for it. Big Z was always an alright player from what I saw of him in Cleveland, though I’m not the most knowledgeable in Pro Basketball to make that claim with tons of certainty.

Go Heat!

wade
lebron

Big Z
Chalmers
UD
Miller
Anthony
Howard
Magloire
Veteran PG (Jwill, arroyo, earl watson or keyon dooling)
Raja Bell? Stackhouse? Barnes? Rasual Butler?

We’re gonna have a tough time getting any young players playing time. If we sign one of those PGs, and two of those backups, we’d only have space for 2 more players right?

That’s tough, gotta choose 2 from pittman, vanardo, butler, scheyer, hasbrouck, beverly?

Hasbrouck/Beverly

it’s tough, watching hasbrouck and beverly play i think they could shut down the likes of wall, chris paul, rajon rondo, etc. but we also need big bodies down low like pittman and vanardo but i feel like butler is gonna be a star once he gets healthy and scheyer would always help with his shooting

Beverley n Pittman

Those are the only two we will need on the team becuz those two i feel can learn fast and help us this year. Patrick Beverley is just like Rondo but a better shooter from all over and Zo needs to take Pittman under his wing get him in shape and learning the game as a true big man wich he can be. absolutely agree

If Shaq isn’t coming back, Pittman would be my choice. Heat need not only size as also a good low post defender – Pittman with his size an esp. weight can keep guys like Howard or Bynum out of the pain.

The Heat are probably in a bit of trouble or he is in contention for ROY.

not to rehash history

we already had Zo in 95-96 season. he became a unrestricted FA. that was the summer of Shaq and Zo and other big FA signings. i remember Juwan, Majerle, PJ, and others signing with us. we could have had both Zo and Juwan back then in the summer of 96. the mistake was Zo opening up his big mouth and telling people that he already had a verbal contract with miami before juwan came aboard. thats what nullified the Juwan contract. i forgot how the CBA stuff worked back then but i think you could have gone over the salary cap to sign your own FA but not because you signed outside FA. basically if Zo stayed quiet, Juwan would have been our PF and we could have had PJ Brown as our backup 4-5 and probably won some championships back then. whatevers just wanted to say it, i’m just glad we have a new dynasty to get excited about.

by HALO_86 on Jul 13, 2010 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

I'm glad you expanded on that, I was literally about to ask on the specifics

I remember it happening back then but couldn’t remember those details. Thanks

Really impressed with the pieces they’re surrounding these guys with. Really it’s hard to impress beyond what they accomplished with Haslem and Miller. Although Wade, James and Bosh left more on the table I think that Haslem and Miller left a larger percentage. That’s like their last big payday so to pull that off was really amazing in my eyes. I like the chemistry Lebron and Z have, should go a long way.

cool

i just remember it because that was suppose to be the start of the first dynasty. i was hearbroken when DS nullified JH contract with us just on a technicality. it was like he was doing whatever he can to prevent us from challenging the Bulls back then. i was soo freaking pissed after being heartbroken. JH then resigned with the Bullets and was forced to play the 5 because the C-Webb refused to play the 5 even though he was bigger player then JH. so JH played out of position for most of his prime years and never got a chance to excel at the natural 4 he should have. of course injuries didn’t help either. whatever though thats in the past now i have something really to look foward to. :)

Mike Miller has not signed yet?
WTF?
Are you kidding me?
WTh!
Z is a good pickup but why Juwan Howard?
Do we not have Joel Anthony?
Can we not simply resign Magloire?
This team is a bit too old.
At least Chalmers and are big three are young.
But it seems like all the role players other than UD and Miller are over the hill!
Can someone please explain why we do not exactly have Mike Miller?
Today is Tuesday the deal should have been finalized by today!
No other team has the best chance to win it all.
He wants to play for a contender so why the hell has he not signed yet?

Its not Joel's fault. we didn't offer him a contract yet.

I believe that qualifying offer just gives us the right to match any outside offers. And we may have to withdraw that offer if Miller wants more money.

by #1Heatfan on Jul 13, 2010 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

miller is more important thatn joel

so just offer miller 1.1 million more and resign magloire to the minimum i guess

I agree, but only if Miller tells Pat that he wants more money.

I think he should stop being a b*tch look at how much money Haslem gave up to allow us to make Miller a respectable offer. Miller should appreciate that. Especially because they are such good friends.

Hmm

It said Miller agrees with heat so what the fug is the problem?
Man I just don’t get it!
First Miller wants a contender and now all of a sudden he throws a moody and becomes a diva?
If he does not sign with Miami I hope he gets injured again!
Magloire better be resigned.

It would be wise if Miller signs

Unless he wants to be paid more but play on a bad team

i know the bulls were looking at him earlier

since they didnt get 2 max level guys and still have a hole at sg, they are prolly trying to lure him with starter minutes, a good team, and a ton more cash to give seeing as how they offered reddick around 7 million a year. just speculation but im trying to figure out what other team would offer more money and a decent shot at winning.

Man Miller better take Pat offer

Because if he don’t we still gone win it all next year it might be a lil bit harder but we can get it done regardless. So if he knows whats good take the offer and win some rings Simple!!!!!!!

Ive been a heat fan before Wade got here.

And yes Boston fans are fairweather, why do you think their attendance numbers were so low when they were a bad team? why when the pats were getting destroyed by the ravens no one was there in the 3rd or 4th quarter? there horrible fans that only follow a good team, not saying Miami has a loyal fanbase. but pretty much most Miami and Boston and LA fans are fairweather. I will say that fans from Ohio, chicago, and detroit are very loyal.

You have no clue what your talking about.

Like really? Of all the fan bases to tag as fair weather? The same fan base that sat through 86 years of heart breaking defeat after heart breaking defeat with the red sox, the patriots first title not coming until this last decade, and whose faithful cried their eyes out when we lost out on a chance on oden or durant, when we missed out on duncan when we had 3 lottery picks, when len bias passed, when reggie lewis passed? Yet we still had a loyal fan base through all those times.

It’s not like i was expecting a sensical arguement, so thats ok.

Don’t come on another team’s blog and talk shit. I know well in the late 80’s and early 90’s no one went to Patriots game, that team never had support from the city that’s why they almost moved the team to St. Louis, only until they started winning superbowls. so don’t give me that fucking BS that boston fans are faithful to all there teams, yea there faithful to the Red Sox yes, but not the celtics or Patriots. Otherwise Celtics attendance wouldn’t have sucked after Larry bird, or Pats pre superbowl’s.

How will the minutes work for your centers?

Big Z averaged only 20.53 minutes a game last year and at 35 it might be pushing it to stretch him too much. Will it be 15-ish for Z, Howard, and Anthony? Also, fan-love aside, do you think it was smart to use a portion of the little remaining money on Haslem? He is a great player but I don’t see how he gets more than 15 minutes a game unless he plays next to Bosh.

He can play next to Bosh for sure – Haslem is a great interior defender with a solid mid range jumper.

People seem to be getting caught up in stats/rotations too much – looking at height differences of 2inches as a mismatch etc.
Positioning, awareness, strength, reflexes, quickness, vertical leaping, wingspan and execution are still factors even when you are giving up 2 inches to the opposing teams center…

by PsyKoMunKy on Jul 14, 2010 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions

They are important factors

and against certain players it can mean a big difference. I guess then the question is what situations will Haslem be put at center? Solely when the other teams backup center is in, or against starters too? I think Haslem would probably get abused by top-flight centers.

Maybe straight up if playing man-toman...

Miami was a top 3 defensive team last year – primarily because of their Zone defence – that emphasizes positioning more than “positions”. Haslem at C can be used if the team wants to quicken the pace or tighten up the strongside of the zone. Bosh can still play C to some degree. I agree that matching up with Howard or Bynum isn’t favorable but most of the big physical centres can be drawn outside of the lane with Ilgauskas or defended via a double team in the zone.

Our current roster has a lot of flexibility – the top 6 guys can all play multiple positions.

by PsyKoMunKy on Jul 14, 2010 2:32 AM EDT up reply actions

You can't talk about Big Z

when determining how Haslem will play because it defeats the purpose of determining how Haslem will play center. Zone defense against top teams seems pretty iffy against top teams. The Thunder used it effectively against the Lakers but I don’t see it working two years in a row. Also I don’t think it is correct to assume zone defense with the personal you have now.

If you double-team Bynum then the double would probably come off Artest who will actually have confidence to shoot the three with the relief from a title, and if you double Howard you are in for a world of trouble with Orlando’s shooters.

We still have 2x All Defensive 1st team guys on the perimeter – Regardless what possibly lack in defence I think we can make up on the offensive end. If the Lakers plan on beating the Heat is Artest 3’s I would roll with it – no way is he beating you consistenlty like that – I like him but he isn’t consistent.
Opposing bigs are also going to have to watch their fouls – Lebron and Wade both get to the line alot…

Why do you want Wade to resign?

He is so good I don’t think stepping down makes much sense.

Hah

please don’t talk to me about the website being dead, our worst post gets more than your best. I am here to talk to fans of other teams that are reasonable because I am a basketball fan after a Laker fan and the game is interesting. Great trash-talking when nobody knows how the role-players are going to be used or how the offense will work.

Will those guys be able to carry over the sacrifice of money into an unselfish attitude in the locker room?

Not that the signings are bad in and of themselves, but it’s something to watch out for.

I have high hopes for this because of the qualities that have embodied the Heat.

DWade is an amazing guy – on court and off – one of the few with a MJ/Kobe type drive to win. He will ensure that Bosh and Lebron stay on point.

It is also worth noting that this is also a rare occassion where good friends have teamed up – other teams develop chemistry by putting players not familiar with each other together – these guys have a bond outside of basketball – that’s a solid foundation of chemistry that other teams haven’t had. They were friends (and college roommates) first – teammates second – I don’t know of any other high profile team nucleus that has been setup in this manner.

Good points.

It will likely take some adjustments, but the Celtics were able to do it two years back and win.

Also, having your friendship formed during the draft, All-Star games, Team USA etc., when everything is going great is one thing, but doing it through an 82-game season is entirely another. I’m not implying that this grouping is doomed to failure, but there are likely going to be some hard times and some disagreements. As long as it doesn’t get the best of them, that’s a perfectly normal and healthy part of any friendship.

True – the rocky periods are where I think it’ll actually work best because they were friends first.

That said, who knows if the Heat are this good if Bosh doesn't sign?

Bosh wanted to play with Wade, so they both picked Miami. Then James signs. Now, Miller and Haslem sign for less money because they want to play with those guys, which started out with Bosh. And now, Big Z and Howard.

TRUE TRUE!!!!!

WELL SAID I JUST CAN’T WAIT TO SEE HOW THIS TEAM WILL LOOK AT THE START OF THE SEASON MEANING WHO ALL ON THE ROSTER AND HOW WELL THEY WILL PLAY TOGETHER
