Udonis Haslem and Mike MIller set to join Heat
Starting with the obvious big news of the day, Udonis Haslem joined his partner Dwyane Wade and taken less money to stay with the Heat. Actually, Udonis took a lot less. Over 30% less. The deal he is signing with the Heat is for 5-years and will be worth around $20 million. That pales in comparison to the $34-35 mil he could have gotten elsewhere.
This isn't the first time that Udonis took less money to stay in Miami. The last time he was a free agent back in 2005 Haslem re-signed with the Heat, turning down less money then he was offered by Memphis. This move fits right in with the other signings by Pat Riley this offseason, and its crazy to think that U-D is the 4th best player to take less money to sign with the Heat.
I also expect Haslem to retain his captain role on the team. He and D-Wade have been running this team for years and that should not change. Even LeBron James showed Udonis some love on Twitter earlier, saying "Happy UD is staying put in Miami. Wouldn't have felt right if he wasn't apart of this. Congrats fam". I'm glad that respect is already there for the elder Haslem, whose roots run deep with this franchise.
Udonis wasn't the only player to commit to the Heat today. Haslem's good friend and former college teammate Mike Miller decided to join the Heat, and that was the final straw for U-D. The two are very close, and Udonis had this to say about his soon to be teammate:
"That's my boy from day one. That's my college roommate. He's like Dwyane is to me, just a different color."
According to his agent, Miller's decision rested on where LeBron ended up. When James picked the Heat, so did Miller. Stats-wise, here is how Miller shaped up in 54 games with the Wizards last season. He averaged 10.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 33 minutes, hitting 50% from the field, 48% from beyond the arc and 82% from the foul line. Sounds like just the guy the Heat need, and I'm willing to bet he's going to get more open looks in Miami then ever before in his career.
The Miller deal should be finalized on Tuesday because the trade between Miami and Minnesota for Michael Beasley was finally processed by the NBA. Miami will get 2nd round picks in 2011 and 2014 in exchange for the former 2nd overall pick. Another former Heat player moving on is Quentin Richardson, who is reportedly signing with the Orlando Magic.
That move will most likely mean that J.J. Reddick is going to end up in Chicago, as the Magic probably aren't going to be matching their 3-year $19 million offer. Orlando has until Friday to make that decision, but they are already over the luxury tax for next season.
The Heat's roster is very quickly starting to take shape, and the remaining open spots are being coveted by older players looking to win a title. Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Jerry Stackhouse, Raja Bell and Juwan Howard all are interested in joining the Heat at a discount, and there is also incumbent Heat big guys Joel Anthony and Jamaal Magloire.
Also factoring in the decision will be the Summer League guys. Dexter Pittman and Jarvis Varnado have a chance of joining the squad, as do guards Pat Beverly, Kenny Hasbrouck and Jon Scheyer.
Finally, it seems that the Heat's big signings weren't as big of an issue during Monday's owners meetings as many people thought. Instead, commissioner David Stern told the media that there is nothing for Heat fans to worry about. Said Stern:
"There is nothing here, at this time, that is causing us to launch an investigation. The three players are totally, as our system has evolved, within their rights to talk to each other. That is not tampering or collusion that is prohibited. That's our rule, right now."
Stern even credited Miami, saying:
"Miami did a pretty good job of clearing out cap space and putting together a plan."
And just to put a cap on things, Stern fined Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert $100,000 for his e-mail rant that immediately followed LeBron James' decision to ‘take his talents to South Beach' last Thursday night. I like the amount of the fine, because it makes you look twice. 6 figures is a pretty hefty amount, but I think the long-term repercussions will be much worse for the Cavs.
What free agent in their right mind is going to want to go to a LeBron-less Cavaliers team knowing full well what their owner is capable of? I completely understand the anger, frustration and pain that he and the rest of Ohio must have felt when James chose to leave, but this was not the way to react.

I read an article on ESPN where it was implied that Shaq may be a candidate for taking less to come back tio Miami.
the DIESEL would protect the pain
that would be great – he do not have to put up big numbers, only protect the pain, block shots, collect rebounds, dunk garbage – he would fit perfectly
Amen to that!
As a former Cavs fan, Shaq played very well in his limited role last year. He would be awesome in the lineup. Oh, and don’t forget about “Z.” Ilgauskus has a nice mid-range shot and is a pretty decent passer. But who really has to be when you got LeBron, Wade or Bosh flying to the rim.
not a fan of that move

Great news
So glad UD is back – Adding Haslem and Miller give the Heat so much flexibility as we can at times have DWade or Lebron assuming a PG-type role with Bosh playing limited minutes at C.
Heat are looking more and more like they have a similar blueprint to the 90’s Bulls…
Forget the taunts about the Big3 and a bunch of scrubs – We are going to be at least 8 deep on the roster.
"Great effort springs naturally from great attitude" - Pat Riley
"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships" - Michael Jordan
I like the reference to the 90's Bulls
The 91 squad— http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/CHI/1991.html –-Have the big three (MJ-Wade, Pippin/Magic—Lebron, Grant—Bosh), Carthwright—Z, Livingston—Udonis, King—sign Magloire, BJ—Chalmers, Paxson—sign Miller. Can find players to cover significant minutes played by Purdue, Hopson, and Craig. Lebron is a bigger stronger Magic who can play D like Pippin. Need good long range shooters in Miller, and someone for Craig coming off the bench; the big three are all in the same age group as the Bulls big three were.
I love the idea of Big Z joining this squad
he is going to get a lot of open looks and he never misses that mid range jumper. Also teams can’t double team Bosh as much with such a great shooter next to him. He is a decent rebounder and good defender with great size and length
Fuck the Lakers...Oh sorry the Fakers
I still really wanna see them sign Nate Robinson and some energy guys off the bench
if you add Nate to this team, you’ll have Nate, Mike Miller, and Haslem off the bench. Then you can put in 1 or 2 of the rookies and then a mix of veterans and young talent
Fuck the Lakers...Oh sorry the Fakers
A.I.
Might as well stir up more media by Pat Riley making Iverson come to terms with his career and get on the winning end. Iverson shouldn’t have an argument backing up Wade, he can still push thhe ball sharing time with Chalmers while Wade is on the court, then move to SG for backup. They should put on a clinic w/ “Izzy” added to the line up as well.
"The Answer"
Made a comment like that, just a few days ago. Would be very nice if AI signs for one year, wins a championship, sees how good the heat is, and signs for a couple more years. I really do think Iverson has some gas left in the tank. Iverson shouldn’t mind backing up Chalmers for obvious reasons. He(Iverson) could still play starting minutes, if he has the stamina for it, while Chalmers start. And I do think he’ll take the league’s minimum salary to play for the Miami Heat.
Imagine Allen Iverson and Dwyane Wade on the court at the same time during a regular season game.
by The One Who Wears The Crown on Jul 13, 2010 8:17 AM EDT up reply actions
AI has absolutely nothing left. I saw him in Philly last year, and since I live in PA, the Sixers were what was on, trust me, AI would add nothing to this team but headache and distraction.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Too much of a risk to chemistry
Don’t get me wrong, I love Iverson. He use to be my favorite player (behind Wade). But he has consistently proved himself to be a selfish player. This team already has to prove the pundits wrong by proving they can gel together. Why add more fuel to the fire?
It won't be adding more fuel
Yeah I do agree he is a selfish player but if he does come to the Miami Heat it shows that he wants to win a championship. And in order for him to win a championship with the team he’ll have to change his ways. Which I think he can. Iverson has shown he can work alongside with stars.
by The One Who Wears The Crown on Jul 13, 2010 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree that there is a chance he could change, but I don’t think it is worth it. He has proven he could play along one star. He has never been worse than the 2nd best player on a roster. I don’t know how he would handle being the 4th or 5th best. In the end I think the risk of both Iverson and Shaq are not worth the rewards with this roster. This team doesn’t need a star 6th man. Someone who can defend and hit 3’s will be more than good enough.
Yeah I guess...
But I still think Iverson would’ve been a huge plus to the team. Btw looking at the free agents available now, I guess Brown would be a nice fit for us now. Someone to hog up the paint. Boone, P. Brezec, Brad Miller would also be a good fit.

Hell no
hes nothing but poison. he’s delusional right now, he probably still feels like he can dominate in this league. let me rot away and retire without a ring, we don’t need him, get players with the right attitude not ones that we have to convince to play down here. the convincing should be over with. its get on board or get rolled time now. No to AI and No to Shaq.
big z really?
I don’t want big z or shaq. i would rather have joel anthony. if you watched all the games last year you would see his value to a team. while he is undersized he plays big. im not sure of this but i think he was in the top 15 for blocks only playing half the minutes of the other guys.
LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!

I really want a true 7 footer
Just for the reason when we play the faker i want us to match up good wit them so we won’t have to double team in the post
A good zone defence can still beat the Lakers – Boston nearly pulled it off. Although people like to match up inch for inch I think athletically we would match up pretty well even if we were giving up 2-3 inches…

I agree
and I think Kwame Brown is a very good defender with size. And other players have said he is one of, if not the, strongest player in the league. The Heat could use that size and strength against Howard and Bynum.
agreed.
i think we should bring in kwame brown. it wouldnt hurt, it could only help.

I'm laughing at all the haters who said we would be 3 deep
We already have 6 good players on the roster. Now we need to add some depth. I say sign the 3 rookies, stackhouse or raja bell, Jason Williams, and Big Z or Kwame Brown (I think he is a great fit). The Heat will be at least 9 or 10 deep. Pat Riley never ceases to amaze me. Whatever he is making this year, he should give himself a hefty bonus, he deserves it.
might not get raja bell anymore...
raja is set to meet with kobe to discuss joining the lakers. hope he goes to miami though
I'm hoping for Igloo and Raja Bell.

hate to reign on your Mike Miller parade, but he was AWFUL with the Wiz last year
do you know why he shot 50%, because he REFUSED to shoot.
I am a diehard Wiz fan, and have followed MM’s career extremely closely since I first saw him play as a frosh at UF. He has mental/confidence issues. He always wants to be the guy that “could have been”, rather than actually seizing the opportunity presented to him.
At UF he was asked to be the man in the tourney, but he deferred to Dupay and Brett Nelson. At Orlando he was asked to be #2 to T-Mac, but he just couldn’t cut it. At Memphis, he was supposed to be the perimeter compliment to Gasol, but he was wedged out by James Posey and Bonzi Wells (BONZI WELLS!!!). In Minny, he tried to be Magic Johnson, to disastrous results. With the Wiz last year, he refused to be aggresive. Refused to look for his shot. And we watched him pass up open look after open look.
Maybe things will be different in Miami. But I bet you guys will be disappointed. All he is being asked to do is stand in the corner and shoot when open. And because that is what he is being asked to do, that is exactly what he WONT do.
by John Park Williams on Jul 13, 2010 12:19 PM EDT reply actions
I think it will be different
He has great players around him who believe in him. I mean, Wade, Lebron, and Bosh too less money so we could sign him, so he should have confidence because others believe in him. And he is going to have wide open looks. Most of his career he was the 2nd option, he isn’t that good. On this team he will be the 4th option and only have wide open looks, so I think he will thrive.
Yes lots of people here are florida fans also
But it will be different he has never played with players as good as this, not to mention that even though spolestra is the coach Pat riley oversees everything. Riley will tell him what to do.

Well i can't wait to see Dexter Pittman
I know alot of people are like we need to go get K. Brown and others but this guy is 308 6’11 &1/2 with the 3 Kings( Wade,James,& Bosh) they will have this guy in the best shape of his life. He will be wat we need down low in the post someone who will be a beast down there!!!! So you heard it 1st from me Dexter Pittman will help this team in the playoff n will win the championship over whoever Lets go Heat!!!!!!
He looked a long ways away in the first summer league game.
I know it is just summer league, but he has a lot of work to do on his body.
Mike Miller would be huge help
to be successful in the playoffs you need a guy that can nail the open 3, whether he can do it in a pressure situation is yet to be seen, but he’ll have a lot of the pressure taken off by the BIG 3 (ohh i am still not used to saying that, i’m getting goosebumps) and Miller can just wet 3’s all day…without a doubt imo the BIGGEST signing of this offseason for the Miami Heat is UD, dude is the heart and soul of this team, would not be the same without him, and a player with his toughness and hustle is crucial in a tight playoff game where we must have every rebound and loose ball. UD IS COMING BACK BABY!!!!!!

I agree 1000%
But i’m saying how everyone is saying we need a big guy down low and alot of people r saying K.brown or Shaq they r ok But Pittman is our big man for years to come plus he is young n ready to be apart of this team with our 3 Kings n all we would need him to really do is hold down the paint defend get rebound n block shots n over time he will be a beast on the O side
2 more done!
Big Z just signed on for the veteran minimum. Juwan Howard is reportedly close to inking his deal for the vet min.
Wade, Bosh, Bron, Chalmers, Miller, UD, Z, Juwan, Pittman, Varnado, Joel, Butler
that’s 12!
potential spots for Beverley, Scheyer, Shavlik Randolph, Kenny Hasbrouck. Who’s the odd man out?
Does this seal it that Raja Bell is going to LA with Fisher?
Stackhouse
I’m hoping we offer Jerry a contract. He said he will definitely sign if we offer. Proveided 3 point shooting and depth at the 2 guard
Butler is injured till next year – unlikely that he makes the 12 at the start of the season

Dunno about that – I thought he did an ACL in the NCAA tourney…

Yes it was an ACL
But before the first summer league game the announcer said that Butler was ahead of schedule and that he should be ready for training camp
so we are looking at as of right now
PG-Chalmers
SG- Wade
SF- James
PF- Bosh
C- Big Z
not bad at all

Pittman is ready this year!!!!
I can see him doing wat Perkins doing for Boston now he is a way better player than Perkins he is bigger wit good hands and the 3Kings will have him ready to go. So if someone say he can’t do wat Perkins do for Boston n more don’t know basketball I say stop getting caught up n needing to go get everyone off the other teams cuz Pittman well handle his own threw out the year and we will win with him at Center he has the tools just need the 3Kings to push it out on the court that he is a beast!!!!!

Rasho Nesterovic, Etan Thomas, Lightning Lou Amundson I really like him one of my favorite players
all would be great signings i think.
Fuck the Lakers...Oh sorry the Fakers
Nope!
Amundson maybe but we don’t need him since we have Joel Anthony.
Same goes for Etan both are undersized.
Rasho plays the same as Nenad Kristic.
Rasho is older and garbage!
Magloire would be the best option.
Brad Miller or Z can split minutes with Joel Anthony.

Hmm
UD and Mike Miller glad to have Haslem return and Mike Miller joining him.
We have been after Miller for 3 years now glad we finally got him.
Now them at point guard either start Hasbrouck or return J Will to the fold.
At starting center resign Magloire.
Z can split the minutes with Joel Anthony.
Dexter Pittman looks like complete garbage! Hopefully he plays better.
at backup two guard Raja Bell or Matt Barnes.
I agree with most of this
However, it is was too early to call Dexter Pittman garbage. It was one summer league game. He will use this year to develop both his body and his game. Those of you expecting big impact from him this year will be disappointed,
Hmm
Z will sign a two year deal with the heat later this week.
Lebron recruited him and his best chance at a title is to come to Wade county.
But will he start for us?
I still like Magloire starting if he is resigned.
Z off the bench is not bad and Joel Anthony should be resigned also.
If Joel is after more money then let him carry is arse.
Magloire and Z could split the minutes.
I wouldnt mind Mag back
