Derek Fisher visits the Heat as roster options start popping up

It didn't take long for Pat Riley and co. to jump right back into action.  Sure, Friday night was amazing...but there is still a lot of work to do with this team.  Even with the Wade-Bosh-James trio, there are still just four players on the Heat's roster.  That wont be the case for much longer though, because now that Miami is the team to beat...players are taking notice.

It started yesterday with Derek Fisher, who flew to Miami to meet with Pat Riley and Micky Arison.  Fisher was met at the airport by LeBron James, who along with his teammates are pushing for the 5-time champion to join them on the Heat.  The Lakers offered Fisher $2.5 million for next season after they paid him $5 million for last season.

Star-divide

For those of you wondering what the hold up was with signing Mike Miller and making an offer to Udonis Haslem, it seems that a bookkeeping issue with the Timberwolves is keeping the deal from being finalized.  The issue, which wont effect the trade, should be resolved by Tuesday.

Super Cool Beas isn't the only member of last years Heat team to be heading elsewhere; Dorell Wright has signed a 3-year deal worth $11 million with Golden State.  This is a great bargain for the Warriors, especially looking at the other contracts that are being handed out.

The first free agent to reach out to the Heat was Juwan Howard, and the Heat are seriously considering him as an option.  Another option that is also being explored is resigning James Jones, and that is apparently already in motion.

Then late Saturday night the Miami Herald learned that Zydrunas Ilguakas is ‘looking into option' of joining the Heat, likely at the veterans minimum.  It's only been a day and already look at the options popping up for the Heat.  Pretty soon the haters aren't going to be able to use the ‘just 3 guys can't win a title' excuse.

Fisher and Howard??

I disagree with Fisher and Juan Howard! Fisher fakes and will retire in LA. Howard ist tooooo old and will hurt the Heat more than he would help! They should get Shaq and Udonis first. Mike Miller would also be a great quality bench player but you also have to look for defense! Tony Allen for examble is a free agent but maybe to expensive for the heat^^

Watch Fisher play – what he gives up in lateral quickness he can make up for in smarts and hitting the open shot.

nothing about Fisher

but I guess he only fakes! He is only checking up what Miami gives. Lakers clearly resign him for sure! Don’t count to much on him.

We have 2 of the best perimeter defenders in the game in Wade and Lebron, in the playoffs they’ll both be playing 40+ mpg and will combined do pretty much 100% of the D on the opposing teams best guys. I don’t think D should be the number one focus in our search for backup wings. IMO Mike Miller is perfect, we need outside shooting, the guy is a sniper.

And Fisher isn’t terrible on D, he’s not quick but he has IQ, and on the oppositon teams with elite pg’s, if they start abusing Fisher then Lebron and Wade can take over defending them the way Kobe did last season.

ive always like D Wade more than the 2 new free agent’s and support him whenever my team doesnt make the playoffs or doesnt do well. Which happens alot as a Net Fan. SO best of luck to the Heat although im sure “We” wil lneed it more than you guys will

Dorell Wright

Its a shame to see him go, would have liked to see him resigned. I think getting Udonis back is a must however. I agree, Mike Miller would be an excellent pick up, didnt he shoot something like 48% from three last year ?

by PhoreverPhinsUK on Jul 11, 2010 5:04 AM EDT reply actions

Wright why

I was hoping that he would stay as well but i can’t blame him for taking 11 mil. good luck out west. I want to keep Anthony to but i’m sure if wright got 11 mil he should get a little more. Why sign Howard when Magloire would sign for the min. He made a impact every time he played even if it was every other 5 games. I dont want a old slow center to run with our studs, i would even take a chance on kwame brown for the min.

LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!

Good by Dorell

In the limited opportunities he received, Dorell preformed and I am very sorry to se him go. However, this is a great opportunity for him, one he never got with the Heat. The Warriors lost 3 good wing players this offseason so Dorell should get plenty of minutes. I wish him nothing but the best.

Hmm

Sad to see D Wright go.
Would have wanted him to remain part of the heat success.
Especially with this heat dynasty in the making.
Good look bro.
Now back to the dynasty roster…
Anxious for Mike Miller and Haslem to be signed.
Juwan Howard?
Are you freaking kidding me?
If we have Haslem as the backup what is Howard for?
A situational guy at the very least?
Magloire should be signed as the starting center period.
He won’t ask for much. He is the enforcer that will bang with the big bodies, scrappy defensive guy and finish around the rim.
At point guard we should return Jason Williams to the fold.
Fisher is older than J Will and I doubt he leaves his laker legacy for Miami.
At backup shooting guard since Wright has departed we should resign Q Rich.

Dynasty roster:
starting 5: Jason Williams,Wade,Lesidekick,Bosh,Magloire
bench:Chalmers,Q Rich,Mike Miller,Haslem,Z,Pittman,Hasbrouck,Vernado

by thedeeofdees on Jul 11, 2010 10:37 AM EDT reply actions

Correction

Replace Z with Joel Anthony.
Z is too slow!
So its: J Will,Wade,Lesidekick,Bosh,Magloire
bench:Chalmers,Q Rich,Mike Miller,Haslem,Joel Anthony,Pittman,Hasbrouck,Vernado.

Hmm

Big Ben worked when Orlando was not a power house.
He is not older over the hill but undersized.
We already have Joel Anthony.
Magloire would be the best option at center.
Fisher does not fit our system in my book.
He is better for the triangle.
Jason Williams knows our system, a bit younger and is a better shooter.

by GO_BUCS on Jul 11, 2010 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

Neither of them.
Jamaal Magloire is the best option right now at center.
Unless Tyson Chandler opts out and we can sign him outright.

How many of you really think Fisher will come to Miami.

I’m hoping he does but I really doubt he will. If we dont grab Igloo (or however you spell his name) I hope we go after Wallace. I think Miller and UD are shoe in’s once that thing with the Wolves clear up.

A starting five of
Fisher
D-Wade
LBJ
Bosh
Miller

would be awesome

by GO_BUCS on Jul 11, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Fisher would be perfect for this group...

Not a guy who has to score to be effective. Can find guys and create plays, is smart with the ball, doesn’t turn it over, knows how to run an offense, and can simply sit back and allow plays to develop. Fisher’s only issue as I see it is his inability to play defense but with Wade and LBJ on the wing playing D then the teams best players should in theory be kept in check. However, Bosh doesn’t play defense at all so if this team truly wants to be covered and have the best starting 5 possible they need a guy in the middle who can rebound and clog the middle…that has to be their primary focus.

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

We need to focus on the D

So defensive-minded players are what we need to be seeking out. Younger, athletic players like Varnardo should do well with the big 3. But also veterans like Magloire and Fisher would work great. In Riley I Trust.

Bad news for those of us hoping the Heat would land Big Ben. Realgm.com is reporting that he has signed a 2 yr deal with the Pistons worth 1.9 mil per.

by #1Heatfan on Jul 11, 2010 6:22 PM EDT reply actions

Hmm

Big Ben?
Is that a joke?
We have Joel Anthony who is younger and can produce better than big Ben.
Our starting center should be Brad Miller or Magloire.
If Schyer fits our system and the kid plays as well as he played in Duke then he is a sure steal.

by thedeeofdees on Jul 11, 2010 6:24 PM EDT reply actions

Brad Miller as our starter?

He is a decent offensive option and can stretch the floor, but he is very weak on the defensive end. In my opinion we need someone who focuses on D to start. I wouldn’t be opposed to starting Magloire or Anthony, but I do not think Pat would be happy with that and while Anthony is a great shot blocker, he isn’t a great rebounder. A suggestion that I find interesting as a starting center is Kwame Brown. People consider Brown to be a bust because he never developed on the offensive end (there is not doubting that). But I think he is a more than capable defender and would fit with the “3 Kings” (until another nickname is thought up) because he wouldn’t expect anything on the offensive end. Also, I just want to clarify that I was interested in Big Ben as a backup not a starter.

by #1Heatfan on Jul 11, 2010 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I heard on ESPN talking about Brown and I think it was Tim Legler or however you spell it or one of those other guys that mentioned Brown would be a great fit and that Kendrick Perkins called Brown the strongest guy in the league. I like the idea. He wouldnt have any pressure to contribute offensively and can focus on defending and rebounding, but I havent heard anything about the Heat actually showing interest…

by GO_BUCS on Jul 11, 2010 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

O.o

I do not like the idea of Brown joining the Miami Heat. Yes he is a capable defender but I do not think he’ll fit it. Big Ben as a backup center seems like a nice idea. I was thinking of 1)Having Joel Anthony play starter minutes but have Magloire start, being subbed out at intervals or 2)Have Joel start and have Big Ben as the second string

by The One Who Wears The Crown on Jul 11, 2010 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Big Ben signed with the Pistons

And I do not think Joel Anthony is capable of playing starters minutes because he really isn’t a very good rebounder and he is undersized. I think the role he played last season is perfect for his skill set. Come off the bench and provide energy and blocked shots. I respect your opinion, but I think Brown is actually a perfect fit. He would play Perkins role with the Celtics a few years ago. Rebound, play solid D, block shots, and score on put backs.

by #1Heatfan on Jul 11, 2010 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Ugh@Big Ben.

The role he played last season, I thought, was also a perfect for him. Hence my number one option was Joel coming off of the bench. But looking back at it now, it probably won’t be ideal for him to play starter minutes IF he does in fact play the way he played last year..er does not develop an “ideal” skill set. But I still think Joel Anthony is capable at playing starter minutes and developing the skill needed to become a great rebounder.. Joel being “undersized” isn’t really a negative, just has to flex some muscle and let his presence be known.

I’ll rather have Miller or Big Z over Brown. They can spread the floor around(bring their defender out to the free throw line or further and allow for easy an easy cut to the basket.

I watched the game and it was pretty entertaining IMO

everyone looked solid, obviously a lot of mistakes (like 20+ TOs), but Varnado blocked some shots, Pittman bulled some people over. Kenny Hasbrouck and Patrick Beverly looked decent. Scheyer out of Duke played solid, he was short all night on his shot, but hit a shot that ultimately put them ahead…he also had a nice dish to Varnado for a slam.

I believe that the best HEAT should do now is to get R. Bell, Z. Ilgauskas or Brad Miller, and Q. Richardson in a one-year contract using the remaining salary cap. If Z. Ilgauskas accept one-yr minimum cap, then it’s better. Also sign all other players that will make up the team along with “3 kings” to one-yr contracts, then try to get a young, legitimate player (Center, PG who can shoot 3’s, or Shooter) in next season’s free agensy.
Raja Bell can still defend and shoot very well, Z. Ilgauskas and B. Miller are still better than 75% of centers in the NBA.

2010-2011 HEAT Roster may look like this:
PG = J. Williams, C. Arroyo, M. Chalmers
SG = D. Wade, R. Bell
SF = L. James, Q. Richardson
PF = C. Bosh, J. Howard and/or Joe Smith
C = Brad Miller and/or Z. Ilgauskas, Joel Anthony

This team will still compete for championship while giving the chance for HEAT to at least get one boundary all-star caliber player next FA season that’s young enough to ensure that 3 kings will have the needed help until 2016.

Next Season Free Agents (fitting to HEAT need)
CENTER : Al Horford, Sam Dalembert, J. Noah, Kendrick Perkins
POINT GUARD : Mike Conley (can also shoot 3’s well)
SHOOTERS : Jamaal Crawford, Kelena Azubuike

by bac1013 on Jul 12, 2010 2:12 AM EDT reply actions

Why not Shaq instead of Z. Ilgauskas???

Shaq is much stronger and defends the pain a lot better than the big Z. Heat will need that.
I also miss Udonis Haslem in your list.

by greenmech on Jul 12, 2010 4:46 AM EDT up reply actions

The benefit of Z is he can also drag his defender out of the lane…

hmmm

It would be great for LBJ to get the big Z – they are long time teammates and friends. BUT Ilgauskas isn’t that big present in the pain like Howard by the magic, Perkins by the Celtics or Bynum by the Lakers. I would count Antony higher on rebounding and physicality in compare to the big Z. Sure he is tall but also slow and anxious on boxouts against stronger players.
