Could their completely dissimilar and contrasting actions lead Dwyane Wade and LeBron James to find themselves on the same page…in Miami?
So Dwyane Wade wants to stay in Miami. Anybody surprised? Didn't think so, though I'm sure more then a few people were quite relieved when he came out last week in the ESPN article and laid to rest any thoughts that he wanted to play anywhere other then with the Heat. As awesome as that was to read, what I love more is how Dwyane wants to make sure that whichever free agent(s) the Heat bring in, he wants to be positive they are a good fit for the team and not just a big name. Said Wade:
"It's about who can come to Miami, it's about who do you trust, who can fit the organization, who best fits you as a player, things of that nature."
It really is a treat that we get to see this guy maturing into a true leader right before our eyes. The fact that he is completely loyal to Pat Riley and the Heat speaks volumes, and I only hope that the young, future NBA superstars are going to follow the example D-Wade is setting...as opposed to say, LeBron James.
Nothing that LeBron James has done since his season ended has brought me to change my opinion of him, although if all the ‘rumors' about his mom and Delonte West are true...I can't say that I blame him for reacting the way he did. Still though, he is King James. If he really wanted to show some love and loyalty to the team and city that has done nothing but love him for the past 7 years, he could find a way.
That concludes the LeBron bashing segment of this blog entry. The reason I even brought him up was because while I'm not in favor of the King relocating to South Beach, his ‘not so cool' actions could be leading him down a path that goes right down to Miami. It's just funny how he and Wade are handling their impending free agency in completely different ways, yet they could very well end up playing together.
I think at this point its safe to say that James isn't going to be returning to Cleveland. So the question is...what is more important to him? Making a ton of money for an average-to-crappy team, or making less money (but still more then 99% of the NBA) and playing for a championship, glory, a legacy...all that good stuff. We'll find out soon enough.
Meanwhile back in Miami, the love for D-Wade continues to grow. The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted to change the name of the county to ‘Miami-Wade County' from July 1st to July 7th. Great timing, right? Just happens to be the first week when free agents can begin negotiating new contracts, though nothing can be signed until at least July 8th.
The resolution from the board lists all the accomplishments and good things that Wade has done to and for South Florida, from his MVP performance in the 2006 Finals to him bringing a gold medal back to Miami in the summer of '08, along with all the amazing charity work he has done for our community. It wraps up with this thought:
"Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Board of County Commissioners of Miami-Dade County, Florida, that the Board, in recognition, of all that Dwyane Wade has done for the visibility, stature and national image of Miami-Dade County, does hereby declare that Miami-Dade County be known as "Miami-Wade County" from July 1-7, 2010."
Dwyane Wade and South Florida...a match made in basketball heaven, or just an awesome city and arguably the best basketball player in the world holding a mutual respect and appreciation for one another? Either way, it works out pretty damn well for all of us.

Staying in Cleveland
“I think at this point its safe to say that James isn’t going to be returning to Cleveland.” WHAT? WHY? From where did you get that? I’ve a Miami Heat fan since I have memory, I think that D-Wade will be coming back at least with Boozer as worst case scenario, and with Bosh and someone else in a best case scenario, but there is no way James will be joining the Heat. Think about it. The “chosen one”, a guy who calls himself “the king”, a guy who wants to be remembered as the “best basketball player ever” does really want to come and play in Miami-Wade county? They might be close friends, but that does not matter, he wants to build his own legacy, and the only way to do that is being the face of your team, the best player by far and thats not going to happen in Miami. Therefore, I think he’s staying in Cleveland because he doesn’t want to live in Jordan’s shadow in Chicago or take serious riks in New York.
I'm not sayig that LeBron will come here...
I’m saying its possible, that’s all. But I feel like his actions since the season ended point to him moving on to a new team.
Where he ends up depends on what is more important to him. Does he want to (as you said) be the chosen one and be known as the best b-ball player ever…or does he want to win championships? Either way though, I think it will be somewhere other then Cleveland.

If he really wants to earn his legacy he needs to stay in Cleveland or face uncertainty in NY.
Piggybacking championships with D-Wade will just raise concerns like it did with Kobe and Shaq with the Lakers…

See, I agree with PsyKoMunKy. I know you didn’t said that he is coming here, you talked about a possibilty, but for me, it’s frankly impossible to imagine Lebron James playing with the Heat. Maybe he has not addressed the situation like Wade, talking about loyalty out loud and all that stuff, but I strongly believe he’s staying in Cleveland because he doesn’t have a better option. Yes, he could join Wade, but in that case he could also sign with the Lakers for a Mid-Level Exception for a year and bingo!, there you have a ring. Winning rings may be important, but it also matters HOW you earn them, and for a guy with this amount of ego, that is really important. Let’s me make things a little bit interesting David, I believe he’s staying in Cleveland, where do you think he is staying? In three weeks all this drama and secrecy will finnaly unfold, and we’ll be able campare the results.
I don't have a 'favorite' pick
Just that he won’t stay in Cleveland…and I hope he stays out of Miami. Total guess….New Jersey. Rich Owner, getting new arena, talent in place (Lopez, Harris), not the total rebuild going on in NY.

God I love Miami.
I still wouldn’t want to see LBJ in Miami. However, I won’t complain too much either if it does happen.

You know i think its great
I love the fact that this city appreciates what its sports players do for the community. When it comes down to it i dont think a lot of government offices really believe sports is something that is held in high regard, but they have a mutual admiration for one another and are changing the name of the county. I know its only for a week but you realize their changing the name of the county! Thats a huge deal.
Go big or go home
Too Bad This Isn't The Old Days....
Too bad things can’t be like it was when you can have on your team a Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlin, Elgin Baylor… or Bill Russell, Hondo, Hineson, or Dr. .J.,, Malone, etc. I know the pay wasnt like it is today vs back then, but you had guys in their rights could be their own island, but they played together, won rings together .
I said that to say this… I dont think D-Wade has a problem with another superstar player on team because he wants to win, and wants to put himself and team in the best position to do so now. I thought that is why they played the game…. TO WIN it all in a team setting???
I think about the Celtics, and the big three prior to Rondo’s status change… each of them spent the better half of their carrer on subpar teams, then when they got together they were able to gel didnt care about the most shot attempts and in doing so .. A NBA Championship. So if it is really about winning for James, then you dont have to wait until your 12th NBA season, when you can start now in collecting the rings and building a dynasty.
Which comes to my next comment… who is more mature, and has the right character to play along side another star??? Again my money is on D-Wade, because I still have questions about James bailing out on his team in the Celtics series,
Just a thought from a Heat fan….
If Bron is all about winning
Miami is the obviuos choice. Teaming with Dwyane WAde would make things really interesting. They wouldn’t necessarily be the odds-on favorites, but they would certainly put themselves promptly in the conversation. For LeBron to go anywhere other than Miami (short of staying in Cleveland), he would be starting over—plain and simple.
