Will Dwyane Wade, Amare Stoudemire and Joe Johnson lead the Heat to glory?

Lately, everyone has been chiming in with their two cents on what the Heat roster will look like in a couple months.  Who are they going to sign?  Who will be gone?  Who will stay?  Realistically, it could be any combination of things that lead to the Heat's roster for next season...but I think we can all agree that whatever that roster looks like, it will be a damn good one.

That being said, I thought that I'd put pen to paper on my current opinion on how Pat Riley will shape his soon-to-be contending Miami Heat roster.  Since at this point there is so much speculation, call this list a combination of what I think and what I hope.  Yes...I'm a blogger, but I'm also a Heat fan too.  Sue me.  I'll do it position by position, and when it's over I welcome your opinions, criticisms and all that goodness.  Here we go...

Star-divide

CENTER

Starting: Amare Stoudemire, Backup: Joel Anthony?

I have a feeling that Chris Bosh is going to follow LeBron James wherever he goes, and yea, best-case scenario has the three teaming up in Miami, that just isn't likely.  Amare has been close to exiting Phoenix once already this season, and I can't see another Western Conference Finals loss changing that.   This year will be the 3rd time in 6 years that the Suns will make it to the West Finals.  The other 3 years in there have them losing in the 2nd round, 1st round, and last year they failed to make the playoffs all together.

Joel get the question mark because while I'd like to see him back here backing up whoever the Heat get to play center, he is still a free agent.  I think there will be several guys taking a little less money to play in Miami, but honestly I have no idea what Joel's value is on the open market.  The smart move would be to stay in Miami and continue on the path of improvement that has seen his game grow by leaps and bounds over the past 3 years.  But who knows...maybe he ends up starting somewhere out west and leading the NBA in blocks next season.

POWER FORWARD

Starting: Michael Beasley, Backup: Udonis Haslem

I can't see the Heat shipping off Beasley with there still being so much up side to his young and raw talent.  The only way I thought that would go down is if D-Wade said ‘I'll only stay if Beasley goes' and it doesn't seem that will be the case.  To tell you the truth, at this point, I'm not a big Beasley fan.  I was a bigger fan of his after last season then this one, and I that's because I expected him to mature both on and off the court and I did not see that at all.  The kid needs to grow up and wise up this summer...

As for Udonis...I firmly believe that he wants to remain in Miami.  I also believe that Pat Riley will offer him a fair amount to stay here and be a part of what they are building.  I think he will get better offers, but in the end I feel that U-D isn't the kind of guy to be bought or lured away by a more lucrative contract.  Miami is his home, and they are building a damn good team.  He'll want to be a part of that, and I think that will be the case.

SMALL FORWARD

Starting: Joe Johnson, Backup: Dorell Wright

Johnson wants out of Atlanta.  It's an overachieving team whose fans boo-ed him off the court during their last game.  He is also very close friends with Dwyane Wade, and I'm sure that Wade will have a part in the recruitment of J-J.  Bottom line, the Heat needs a sharpshooting wingman for Wade who can produce on the outside as well as in the post if needed.  Johnson fits the mold perfectly and that combined with his boy D-Wade convincing him to sign down here...I can't see this not getting done.

Dorell still has a lot to prove and why not do it with the Heat?  He is coming off of his best NBA season for many reasons...the main ones being his production, his shooting improvements and his health.  He made $2.5 million last season and I imagine the Heat can get him back for a similar amount.

SHOOTING GUARD

Starting: Dwyane Wade, Backup: Raja Bell, Daequan Cook

Dwyane Wade is not leaving Miami.  He is going to be a big part of the recruitment of other superstar players and be as big a part as Pat Riley and Micky Arison in building that championship roster.  But he is NOT leaving.  Not much more to it then that.

Raja Bell will be a great addition to the Heat and he'll come cheap.  He is exactly the kind of player Pat Riley likes; hard working, good defender and can contribute offensively.  He is coming off of a season in which he played in just 6 games due to a non-shooting wrist injury and I'm sure is hungry to get back out there and be productive again.  He has already expressed his desire to join the Heat, so it seems like a legitimate guess that he'll be playing for the Heat next season.

I don't know if anyone on this roster will be hungrier for a comeback season then Daequan Cook.   He's due $2.16 million next season and I can't see anyone willing to take on that contract (even if it is expiring) after the year he had in 09-10.  He played a total of 19 minutes over the last 23 games of the season, and that coming on the heels of a very disappointing end to the 08-09 season.  I hope that Michael Beasley pays attention to how hard Daequan works this offseason.  Last summer he worked a lot of his ball handling, but this summer I expect Daequan to have similar workouts to the ones that Dorell Wright was doing to significantly improve his shooting.

POINT GUARD

Starting: Mario Chalmers, Backup: ? (Patrick Beverly or Carlos Arroyo?)

Mario just needs to sharpen his skills this summer.  His constant turnovers and occasional ugly shots had me wavering on the kid many times last season, but he has some serious talent that often overwhelmed the negatives.  He can drive the ball, he can shoot, and has very quick hands on defense.  He'll need to improve on the bad decisions, which comes with experience and maturity.  Once he cuts out the turnovers and improves his footwork on the defensive end, he'll be a solid point guard for the talent-heavy Heat.

I'd like to see Pat Beverly win a spot on the roster next season but honestly I cant say if that's a realistic possibility.  His numbers last season with Olympiacos Piraeus weren't incredibly impressive (17 games, 9.5 min, 3.1 ppg on 53% shooting, 2.0 reb, 0.6 ast and 0.7 stl) but those stats can be misleading.  We'll just have to wait and see what happens over the summer and into training camp.

So there you have it.  My opinion on how the Heat roster will shape up for when we win our 2nd NBA Championship in the 2010-11 season.  I realize a lot of this has to do with players taking less then market value to play for the Heat, Dorell and Udonis included, but it's a special case where these guys will want to play together for the greater goal.  It also helps that so many of them are already good friends.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Quentin Richardson do the same in order to stay and play with his best friends (D-Wade, Dorell and Q were a very tight-knit bunch, hence their self-appointed group nickname: the 1-3-5).  Also, the backup positions can be interchanged...because Dorell can play guard or forward, Chalmers can play the 1 or the 2, etc.  This is just a tentative thought of how the main positions of our roster will come to be for next season.  We'll know a lot more in about 5 weeks.

I don’t mean to suggest that I disagree with you, but I’m curious why you are so confident in the fact Wade will stay in Miami?

by jakesinger777 on May 24, 2010 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

Everything that he and Riley have said over the past year

all signs point to Wade staying. Wade wants to win, Riley wants to build dynasty. Wade will get more money here then anywhere else. Wade says his home is in Miami and that the ball is in their court to keep him here; he wants to contend every year and have a team built around him to do so. Riley wants the same thing and has put Miami in a financial situation to bring in those key big free agents to do just that.
It would make no sense for Wade to leave considering all those circumstances and what he and Riley have said.

I'm as confident of Wade returning

as I am any other transaction in my basketball life. If I had to put a percentage on Wade going to Chicago, New York, or anywhere else, I’d put it at less than 1%. Perhaps more than any of the other big names opting out this summer, D-Wade strikes me as the loyal type. Riley took him at #4 in 2003 when I don’t recall a lot of teams being ready to stake the next few years of their franchise on the kid out of Marquette. He’s also won a Title with Miami and appears to love the city and its fans. He’s gone on record as saying that his heart is there and that the organization is in the driver’s seat. At this point, they’d have to do something extremely dumb to push him away, and I just don’t see that happening.

Great Idea

I’ve been thinking of doing something similar, but I just wasn’t sure how to approach it, and I’ve been crunching some Salary Cap numbers to see what will even be realistic in terms of moves the Heat can make. I do have a question: I read somewhere that the Heat won’t be allowed to exceed the Cap to sign players this summer. Is that true? Why? Why do the NBA have the luxury tax threshold in that case? Or is the tax reserved for deals that involve trades?

I think I now understand the cap in relation to free agency

but new question: when the Heat reach the Cap this summer, will they then be awarded a Mid-Level Exception?

I belive so

but don’t hold me to that…I’ve been trying to crunch numbers as well while learning the league policies on the cap. This is new to me, so if you have info or insight please let it be known!

Raja Bell

I’d love to see Raja coming off the bench for us at the 2. He’s a good on the ball defender and can shoot the 3 and mid range. He has already said he wants to play for his home town team, and this has nothing to do with the fact we went to high school together!

We won't have the money for that

My Wishes

PG Mario Chalmers, Patrick Beverly

Dwyane Wade will have to continue to share a lot of ballhandling responsibility (perhaps a little less if Joe Johnson comes on board), but Diamond Rio’s scoring/shooting ability makes it such that the Heat can afford to start him at PG. He must, however, learn to make more sound decisions. He doesn’t have to make plays for other guys; just stop throwing the ball away and be a better manager. Arroyo’s out. Some team out there has seen how consistent he has been in his last two NBA seasons in Florida and could use his services as a back-up for far more than the Heat will be able to pay him. I’m encouraged by Beverly’s stint overseas—just look at what practicing over there did for Brandon Jennings’ game.

SG You-Know-Who, Raja Bell

Bell can handle the ball some, but his biggest contributions would be on defense and spreading the floor for the other playmakers to have room to operate. He also is a relatively inexpensive option.

SF Joe Johnson, Dorell Wright

Johnson is a really good fit for this team. He can carry a team offensively in stretches. He’s a playmaker. He defends well even though it doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. Wright has shown us too much to just let him get away at this point. With Haslem likely gone (in my opinion), Dorell will be the only guy left from Wade’s good ol’ days with the Heat.

PF Carlos Boozer, Michael Beasley

Boozer is the second best fit of the available power forwards (again my opinion). He’s also the best available at the position who should know he’s not worth MAX$. If the post player we get is forced to play center, however, Amare Stoudemire is my first option simply because he’s the only guy of the lot who has legitimate experience playing the position for a season or two.

I just don’t think Beasley will be traded at this point, and perhaps making him the #1 option on the second unit is the best thing for both parties at this point. If he still just isn’t working out as of next summer, he’ll be a restricted free agent and perhaps we could trade him at that point. Haslem—like Arroyo—is out. This is his last long-term contract, and somebody’s going to offer him some good $.

C Brendan Haywood, Jamaal Magloire

Because of Wade’s ability to make plays (and Joe Johnson’s if he’s on the roster), the center position is the most important upgrade we need. Haywood is almost an ideal guy to put in that position because he can protect the Paint, and he’s got a bit left in the tank.

Magloire would be a quality guy to keep around for a solid 15 minutes a game or so, and he’d probably be willing to play for close to the minimum. The coaching staff will need to play him the 15 minutes per for him to show his value though.

Additional Support – Joel Anthony (Post), Daequan Cook (Perimeter)

Joel may be able to pick up more $ on the open market, but if he continues to develop and work hard, I believe the Heat will reward him next summer.

I look for Cook to rebound from last season. You don’t just forget how to shoot a basketball unless something is physically wrong. If it’s mental, I believe he can work it out over the summer.

After Amare beasted the lakers yesterday

I remain high on him again, but wonder if he can play center full time and without a nash.

Joe Johnson as a 3rd option intrigues me. It seems as he became the so called "superstar’ of the hawks, his once automatic jumper became kinda iffy at times

And I think Haslem bolts.I just cannot stomach another year of him hoarding minutes from Beasley because he has “grit.” I love UD and what he has done for us but I think we gotta say bye ala PJ Brown (a similar player who I realize was traded)

by kazam92 on May 24, 2010 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

Stoudamire is certainly a dynamic player

and he would make the Heat better no doubt. What worries me is that it took him two games against the Lakers to come up with that type of effort. Before that, sure he put up the 20 points he generally gets, but he had very little effect on the outcomes of the first two games. I am also concerned with what the Chuckster calls Amare’s SF tendancies (i.e. getting 6 rebounds rather frequently).

Playing, coaching, and watching basketball.

My Thoughts...

PG: Chalmers, Beverley, Hasbrouck
Chalmers (re)proved himself in the playoffs. Beverley is going to be a defensive specialist. Would’ve liked to see some min’s for Hasbrouck at end of season.
SG: DWade, Bell, Cook
$30 mil more than any other team can offer, plus this is DWade’s house. Bell will be a solid defensive specialist that can hit the three. Agree that Cook has things to prove.
SF: Johnson, Richardson, Wright
A change of scenery is all J.J. needs to regain his AllStar form. Q will give up a lil to gain a lot (ring). D Wright can play 4 positions and finally got to prove his worth.
PF: Beasley, Haslem, Dozier
I honestly believe that Beasley will have a breakout season next year and quite the doubters. U.D. gives hometeam discount and continues his steady play. Dozier, like Hasbrouck and Beverley, offer inexpensive pieces that could develop later.
C: Stoudemire, Anthony, Draft Pick (1st)
Amar’e returns to Florida and dominates weak East Centers without missing a beat running the Pick n Roll with DWade and Chalmers and get this he learns to play HEAT defense! Anthony gets a raise and continues to learn his craft with the team that believed in him when no others would. I would love to see us draft Whiteside or Alabi and let them stay here and develop along with the other young prospects.

by SilentStorm73 on May 24, 2010 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

Hmm

First of all if this guy does not already know I will teach him.
Yes we can resign Wade for max and get either Bosh,Amare or Boozer.
To add a third marquee guy like Joe Johnson we must trade Beasley,Cook and our first round draft pick.
Or simply trade Beasley and the pick for Bosh if we were to get Bosh in a sign and trade.
So one way or another Beasley is gone, he is inconsistent and a Tito!
Amare excels as a powerforward not a center.
The center has to be a big body that can rebound and block shots, score down low.
Therefore….
Here should be the 2010-2011 redeem heat team roster:
Starting 5: Pat Beverley or Steve Blake,Wade,Joe Johnson,Stoudemire,Brendan Haywood
bench: Chalmers,Raja Bell,Dorrell Wright,Haslem,Joel Anthony,Magloire,2nd round draft picks.
That’s a two man deep roster with scoring, depth, defensive presence and size.

Come on now, if Amare is the center, too much allowed points in the paint
Haslem cannot be our starting powerforward again neither can Beasley, they will be outplayed by the size of bigger four men.
Arroyo is garbage, I would take Steve Blake over him whom is a better shooter, defender and has a high basketball IQ

by thedeeofdees on May 24, 2010 11:23 PM EDT reply actions

Good stuff

Just have to disagree with you on Arroyo being garbage. He’s not a shooter, but makes a high percentage of the shots he decides to shoot, and without his steady hand, the Heat would not have won 47 games this season.

Playing, coaching, and watching basketball.

by sherman r on May 24, 2010 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmmm

Well Arroyo could be a situational point guard but we need a new starting point guard period.
Either Chalmers works harder to get his job back or he remains on the bench, Beverley can work, Hasbrouck may work depends how he does in summer league and of course Steve Blake who would immediately fit in.

just wanted to say he’s not garbage.

Playing, coaching, and watching basketball.

by sherman r on May 25, 2010 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Hope this proves true...

My only concern over Amare is if he can display the defensive tendancies needed – there is no denying his talent just needs to commit to be more defensive minded. Realistically few teams have legitimate centres so as long as he can man the middle and play the pick and roll with Wade (& JJ) it’ll be great for the heat.
I like the idea of Joe Johnson being here but if he signs elsewhere I would like for Riley to do what he can to get Rudy Gay.
Other good pickups would be Anthony Morrow (great outside shooter) or Haywood but it depends how much they are asking for.
If Q-Rich does come back can someone please tell him to stop taking bad shots early in the shot clock – it kills me…

Most important I think will be how well everyone’s role is defined. With the talent upgrade we are expecting I see no reason for the Heat to win less than 55 games next year and for a few years after…

Money difference is less than you may think.

Nearly all states have an income tax. Florida does not, therefore when we compare salaries we have to look at the bottom line after taxes to see what the difference really is.

Get rid of Beasley at all cost. Is there any we can eliminate enough salary by getting rid of some of the dead wood on this team in order to consider Dirk in the mix?

by webpilot on May 25, 2010 9:12 AM EDT reply actions

Dirk would bring an interesting element to this team

but he’s a a little long in the tooth at this point. Don’t know if he and the team could agree on length of contract.

Cuban will do anything short of sacrificing his firstborn child to keep Dirk and outbid everybody else.

Playing, coaching, and watching basketball.

by sherman r on May 25, 2010 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Dirk

I agree, but Dirk (32) is very durable and plays a lot of minutes without a problem. I don’t know who in their right mind would want to play for Cuban.

Another thing to consider is if Riley returns to coach the team. Please take note of the large amount of injuries that Wade sustained playing Riley ball. With the slow play and half court style of Riley, Wade spends more time picking himself off the floor than anything else. Not so under Spolestra. So, Wade has to consider whether or not he would even want to play if Riley coaches. It will definitely shorten his career, so even if the Heat can pay the max, in the long run Wade will make less money if he plays for Riley.

by webpilot on May 25, 2010 11:04 AM EDT reply actions

Riley and Spo play a similar slow pace

I think Wade has become a little more selective about how he attacks the basket and doesn’t do it with the reckless abandon he used to. If he continues to take care of himself, he’ll be fine not matter who coaches. Dirk still has some very good years left, but he’ll be 37 or 38 at the end of a MAX contract. He may well be worth it, but it is a risk. Also, if he’s the PF we go with, it becomes even more imperative that we get a solid center to protect the paint.

Playing, coaching, and watching basketball.

by sherman r on May 25, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Dirk

If there is any one player that can take the heat off of Wade it is Dirk. You can’t double Wade and Dirk at the same time and you can’t leave either of them alone. One of the goals of the Heat should be to surround Wade with a couple of players that won’t allow the constant double of triple coverage. That should be the team’s main goal, Wade may even consider staying with the Heat, right now I am not sure he will.

All indications are

Dirk’s going to opt out. We’ll see if he’s actually interested in relocating once July 1 hits. I believe he may be because it just isn’t working in Dallas. They win a lot of games down there but always fold in the Playoffs. Perhaps he’ll be intrigued at the prospect of trying a full season with Caron on board and the emerging Roddy Beabouis. But yes, he’s definitely a PF. Dallas used to play him in stints at center back when they had Shawn Bradley and Nellie wanted to play small, and you can probably still play him there in fantasy basketball, but he’s no center. We’d be better off taking a chance on Joel starting if we were to bring Dirk in.

Haywood bangs, does the dirty work, rebounds and blocks lots of shots aswel as finish around the rim.
bosh plays about 18 feet from the rim, also a good rebounder, knock down shooter, has range, great vision of the court and great passer.
Amare is not a great passer, he needs picks set for him, Bosh can get his own shot, Bosh does more for you, yes Amare is a bit more athletic but Bosh is younger, and is a better all around everything.

Another thing to think about with Blake

is that he could easily start on at least five NBA teams (including the Heat), and probably 20 out of 30 GMs would take him over whoever is #2 on his team’s PG depth chart at this point. For that reason, he may command at least MLE-type $, and I don’t know that we can afford to pay him that—particularly if we plug those other holes. He may have to decide if he wants to start or if he wants to max out financially.

That’s the most I’ve seen for a post since I joined the Peninsula—other than Open Game Threads of course.

In many ways

I like him better than Joe Johnson at the 3 (and he’d be cheaper to boot), and he’s certainly worth inquiring about, but I’ve sort of resigned myself to the fact that the Grizz’s owner claims he’ll match any offer for the guy. But hey, if Pat puts the right number down or can swing a deal, who knows? I also like Mike Miller. He’s a heck of a shooter and a willing passer.

Interesting

I think that is nice and all but I would love to get Dirk instead of Amare. Dirk will be able to space out the floor (which equals Wade getting funky with it for 30+ points) with his long range shooting or take it to the basket. Dirk, in my opinion, is a better player than Amare. If Wade and Dirk were on the court there is no way a team can/cannot afford to double team them both. It’s a “pick your poison”/“choose one” situation. If you double team both Wade and Dirk SOMEONE will be open(and take into account that Wade rips defenders that are double teaming him apart). If a decide not to double team Wade and Dirk, it is guaranteed that they will go off.

Forgot to add

So yeah. PG:Bell SG: Wade SF:Johnson PF:Dirk and C:Joel(I think it’ll be okay to start him we just need a hustle/role player that will get boards, block shots, make baskets when given the opportunity). And with that being said we just need a nice bench.

My reservation about Dirk is that he's not

going to be worth it by the end of the contract due to his age, and I don’t see him signing for less than 5 years. The other PFs may not be worth it by then either, but at least they’ll

As for the starting line-up you put out there, I think the way you get away with that is to keep Magloire and start him. Play Mags in 5-6 minute stints, but allow Joel to play starter’s minutes. Also, with that line-up we’d have enough $ to sign a guy to bring some needed scoring off the bench or maybe even be in the Melo Sweepstakes in 2011.

any other big man at that age i would agree with you, but this is a shooting big man who doesnt really play that physical. i think he can still be good 5 years down, especially since he wont have to carry the team anymore with wade+1 beside him.

You are right

about Dirk’s style of play being conducive to a lengthy, relevant career, so it just might be right. I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to it—especially in the short-term.

I don't think that works cap-wise, with all the free agents you're suggesting

After resigning Wade, you’ll have about 30 million of cap space
