Was it necessary...

The little brawl at the end of Game 1 was COMPLETELY necessary. But we will get to that later. The way the brawl started is questionable but I think it was Quentin Richardson's fault. Think about it, would Kevin Garnett get pissed at Quentin if he said, "Is he ok?" I believe he said something really offensive to Paul Pierce that really pissed Garnett. And besides I think the elbow was just a way to clear out of the scene, not really a straight shot to Quentin Richardson. Anyways, whatever happened we will not know for a while, but this little brawl has electrified the series. Besides, I can't wait to boo Garnett when he is announced in Game 3 by the PA announcer.

I don't feel the skirmish was necessary, but...

…I think the way it was handled by the team right in front of their bench helps the Heat. Standing up to the Big Bad Wolf let the Celtics (namely KG himself) know that their little intimidation tactics won’t work on the team as a whole. We didn’t get ,“punked” in that situation, and that may prove invaluable down the road in this series.

As far as who “started it,” I don’t think Q or KG is blameless, but I do believe Garnett was more responsible from beginning to end. Qs contention is that he was just taking the ball out, business as usual. That’s totally believable. KG probably viewed that as a “disrespectful” move because it showed some kind of disgregard for his fallen teammate.

KGs contention that Q was “standing over” Pierce is hard to believe because from what I saw on the video, Q never even got close to Hollywood before Garnett started bitching and moaning. You think KG didn’t mean to hit Q? The look on his face and the manner in which he swung the elbow tells me that at the very least, Garnett was hoping the elbow would hit someone—and that he hoped it would be Q. Intent + contact = suspension.

My alliance to the Heat aside, I think KG deserved two games. That type of stuff can’t be tolerated. Had the Heat players responded differently (which would have been totally understandable), things could have gone much differently—and far more people could have gotten hurt—and suspended.

Playing, coaching, and watching basketball.
