Game #62: Miami Heat (32-31) vs. Charlotte Bobcats (30-31)

With just 18 games left in the regular season we are going to start hearing those special two words that tend to pop up this time of year...playoff implications.  Games like the one Miami is going to play tonight will get a little more attention because of how it may effect the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

Thanks to their current little win streak, Miami now sits all alone in 7th place.  5th place Milwaukee is just a game and a half ahead of the Heat, and 6th place Toronto is just a game up.  On the other side, the Heat have a slim half-game lead over 8th place Chicago and are a full game ahead of 9th place Charlotte, tonight's opponent.  Later on this week the Heat will play Chicago as well, and I'm sure nobody knows as well as the Heat players that they hold their collective fate in their own hands.

The last time Miami hooked up with Charlotte the results weren't pretty.  The Bobcats had already beaten the Heat down in Miami, and before the game Michael Beasley added fuel to the fire by saying "if we stay together and stay focused, it should be an easy win."  Charlotte thanked Beasley and the Heat for the bulletin board material by beating them down thoroughly.  The 39-point win was the most lop-sided in Bobcats history, and the 65 points they gave up to Miami were the fewest scored by an opponent in their history.

A win would be very beneficial for Miami because since the Bobcats have already beaten the Heat twice this year.  A win tonight would clinch the season series for Charlotte, giving them the first tiebreaker should the teams finish the regular season with the same record.  The 4th and final game between the teams will be a week from this Saturday (March 20th), at the AAA.

Star-divide

Hopefully the great showing by Michael Beasley against the Hawks on Saturday was a sign of things to come.  Hopefully knowing that Dwyane Wade has his back but needs the youngster to step up will be the inspiration that Beasley has been lacking.  It certainly worked on Saturday, when during a timeout in the 2nd half, Wade made it clear to Beasley exactly what he, and the team, needed.

Said Beasley, of Wade:

"He punched me in the chest and he was yelling, 'I need you. No more feeling sorry for yourself'."

GAME NOTES

  • After leaving Saturday's game in the 1st half with a knee injury, Jermaine O'Neal is expected to return to the Heat's starting lineup tonight.
  • The Heat are also expecting to get back Dorell Wright, who had to sit out when his surgically repaired left knee began to swell.
  • Miami has lost five of its last six visits to Charlotte.
  • The Bobcats have won three of their last four games at home, including wins over Cleveland and the Lakers
  • Quentin Richardson is coming off of back-to-back 20-point games for the first time this season.  He shot 55.5% from the field in those two games, including 12 three-pointers.

Tipoff from Time Warner Cable Arena is set for 7pm.  The Heat will see a different Bobcats team then the one that destroyed them in January.  Charlotte added Tyrus Thomas and Theo Ratliff at the trade deadline, and will also have Tyson Chandler back in the lineup.  Chandler missed all but 3 games between December 26th and March 3rd, including both games between the Bobcats and the Heat.

We need this game in a bad way

We cant fall into 8th. We have to stay ahead of this pack. We better suck it up and take this one seriously.

So you think the Heat actually goes into games not taking things seriously

You are a I???T.
The Heat aren’t a team full of “GODS”… they aren’t gonna win every game. Some nights the ball bounces in ones favor and some nights it doesn’t. This should not be confused with a team effort. Now I would like to see them win just as much as the next HEAT FAN. But they are up against a team that is equally, if not more, talented than they are. A team that brings the same effort as they do on the defensive end of the floor. A team being coached by a HALL OF FAME COACH. A team that has done what the Heat hasn’t been able to… defeat the Cavs and Celtics. They aren’t a team of scrubs.
So if the Heat doesn’t come out on top… no biggie… it’s just a game. Try just sitting and enjoying the fact that Miami has a team. They could easily be the TAMPA BAY HEAT!!!

On a lighter not… How unique was Dwyane Wade’s effort last Tuesday against the Golden State Warriors? With 35 points, 12 assists, six rebounds and four steals, it was, according to Elias Sports Bureau, only the third time in the last 15 seasons a player reached those statistical levels in the same game. The only others to do it were the Washington Wizards’ Gilbert Arenas, with 35, 12, 7 and 4 against the Clippers in January 2007 and Wade, himself, with 48, 12, 6 and 4 in last March’s double-overtime thriller against the Chicago Bulls.

I think you were reading just a little too much into my statement

Of course they take all the games seriously. But some they are more motivated for than others, which is 100% true no matter what you think. Since the last time we played Charlotte and Beasley just stated “It should be an easy win” before the game shows they didnt take them “seriously” when we got pounded. Now im not knocking on Beasley so before you go flying off the handle about that i was just using his statement as an example.

Obviously they arent going to win EVERY game. I know their not the Lakers, or the Cavs, but as any sane fan i dont want them to fall to the bottom of the playoff hunt against a good team that could take our playoff spot away from us. You say if we lose then no biggie, its only one game. Well its more than just one game. If we lose then they win the season series which is the first tie breaker when it comes down to playoff seedings.

I think your getting a little over-dramatic with the “Be happy we have a team” remark. I love the Heat as much as anyone else, but realize were in a large market thats not going to lose our basketball team to Tampa, or any other smaller market city.

i do not like where we're sitting right now. if we can hop the bucks and the raptors in the last stretch (which is entirely feasible)

I think a round 1 match-up against the Hawks would be in our favor. staying stagnant @ 7 and having to face the Magic in the first round could be a bit much for us. Hopefully it’s not a one step forward, two steps back scenario where we pull out 4 of our next 5 (assuming a win tonight, I think the toughest obstacle will be SA, might be different in AAA, but can’t shake that spanking we got in TX) we could make that jump, we’d just have to not take those proverbial “two steps back.” With 6 home games in a row though, i like our chances; but hoping for 6 wins in 12 days is asking a bit much. We can dream though. Facing the Cavs, Magic or Celts in round 1 gives me a pit in my stomach, someone have an alkaseltzer?

I can handle facing the Hawks and Magic in the 1st round...

3-1 against the Hawks and 2-1 against the Magic…. We could survive a 6 or 7 game playoff series against either of them.

Hawks would be ideal for me, esp in the pipe dream where we switch seeds and have homecourt

as for the Magic, idk, makes me uneasy, they’re tough in the playoffs. although i could hit up the games in Orlando if they do play the Magic & we always win when I go to a Heat/Magic game up here…I’ll bring my juju if that’s the case
