A Plan of Action

Okay, this season looks like it’s going to have a rather uneventful end for us. We didn’t take a chance on signing the likes Jamal Tinsley, Stephon Marbury, or Allen Iverson earlier in the season. We didn’t make a trade because no one wanted the package of expiring contracts we have (honestly, I don’t blame them). That’s okay. This should be, in my opinion, Pat Riley’s approach to the rest of the season and free agency.

  1. Carefully consider picking up a new coach. Coach Spo had the Heat overachieving last season, and he’s probably not the worst guy who could be at the helm, but maybe Riles could look at a college guy who’s ready to make the next step who actually has some innovative offensive ideas, like maybe a Jay Wright out of Villanova or a Quin Snyder, who is actually the current coach of the Spurs’ D-League team.
  2.
  3. Decide whether Beasley is going to play small or power forward. I think he can excel at either forward position because of his skill level, but he needs to know what his position is, what the organization expects from him, and what his coach expects of him on the court. Then he can work on improving his game with purpose. The wait-and-see games they’re playing right now because of the over-hyped 2010 Free Agent Class are not fair to this kid and could turn Beasley into a slightly more productive Darko-type.
  4.
  5. Evaluate this roster carefully to determine who will still be in a Heat uniform besides Wade and Beasley going forward. Personally, I think Haslem should retire with the Heat being his only franchise. He’s tough as nails, and he’s one of those heart-and-soul-of-the-team-type guys. I like the flashes Dorell Wright has shown. In all fairness, this kid came straight out of high school as a guy with skills who needed to be developed. He’s dealt with some injuries and, had he gone to college for four years, he’d only be in his second season right now. I’ll take his upside. I like Arroyo and Chalmers as a PG tandem. They’re both gritty and both can run a unit, but more than likely one (or both) of them won’t be with us on Opening Night. I’ll take Jermaine O’Neal to stay also as long as it’s at a discounted rate—very discounted. Everyone else can go. I know Cook and Jones are still under contract through 2012-13, but maybe they can get healthy and make a few shots here and there.
  6. See who where we actually need help and not just get overly-excited at who’s available in Free Agency. If Michael Beasley is handled properly, perhaps we’re not so desperate for a Chris Bosh or a Carlos Boozer. We would then need a point guard who can create for himself or others, a consistent shooter who will seek out open looks from all the attention Wade and Beasley will get and knock them down, and a full-time defensive center. We need guys who fit in and will actually help us get better, not just guys who have an "ooh" factor.
  7.
  8. Pick smart in the Draft. With the exceptions of Michael Beasley, Dwyane Wade, and Caron Butler, I’ve been less than impressed with Riles on Draft Day. Personally, I like Damion James out of Texas if he’s still available when we pick. Who knows? We’re flirting with the Lottery right now. Maybe we can get John Wall (I wouldn’t bank on it, but a guy can dream). That’s not to say I hope we’re in the Lottery. We still have a run in us if healthy.

You are not a Heat fan

Dude you clearly don’t watch many Heat games and I question whether or not you are a Heat fan.

1. Arroyo and Chalmers are not a good tandem… Arroyo isn’t even a good fit for the Heat. Why so many have been pleased with him is beyond me. People don’t even know the real story behind why Chalmers were benched. It wasn’t because of a lack of production… it was from him being rebelious in practice and not doing what he was told. Chalmers can be brought back but Arroyo and Alston have to go. The Heat should go after CJ Watson of Golden State… solid size and instant offense off the bench.

2. What to do with Joel Anthony… he is the best shot blocker per minute of play in the NBA according to 82games.com and he’s also the teams best low block defender. Problem with Joel is he’s 6’8 and limited offensively(DUNKS and PUT BACKS).

3. Cook and Wright are keepers… they both are under 25 and both are young guys that buy into playing defense. They both appear to have finally turned that corner. You aren’t gonna find many BACK-UPS that are willing to deal with all that they are asked to.

Anyway, I actually like the team as a whole, minus 3 or 4 pieces of course. This is what I fill the team needs to do to be a better club come next season.

C=????(I like O’Neal but I don’t see the Heat spending the 8 to 11 million he will command next season

PF= Beasley(will be the best PF in the NBA 2 to 3 years from now)

SF=????(Dorrel Wright would be my choice to start… but a sharp shooter from deep would be nice)

SG=(Wade)

PG=????(A guy that can get to the rack and can knock down shots)

Bench:
C= (6’11 guy or better… Camby or Gooden would be nice)
PF= Haslem
SF= (aggresive scorer like Thorton… Butler of LAC)
SG= Cook
PG= CJ Watson
PF/C
PG/SG

NEW COACH!!! McAdoo or Byron Scott

Not a fan?

It’s clear that there is no pleasing you, so I’ll only respond to a few of your points. On the rest, we just have a fundamental difference of opinion. I’m okay with that, but I don’t see how anything I said is an indictment against me as a fan. Perhaps you could shed some light on that. Anyway, on to the points I’ll comment on:

Point guard. Arroyo and Chalmers give you about the same thing in terms of wins. Each is .500 as the starter, granted Chalmers has almost twice as many starts as Arroyo. Combined, they make a good point guard for this team, similar to the 1, 2 punch of Fisher and Farmar from a season ago (although not as productive or successful). Combined or not, they are not the long-term answer. Both are career back-ups at the position. I like Watson. He’s underused and undervalued in Golden State. He’d be a nice fit at the right price. I agree with you on Alston as well: He has to go. I never thought he’d take us to the next level of solidifying a 4 or 5 seed, but I thought his ability to make shots would make us better. So much for that.

Center. Joel Anthony would be great to keep around as a back-up for defensive purposes, but not much else. I like Camby and Gooden (I hope Riles considers picking him up if he’s bought out by the Clippers to see how he might fit). I also like Jarvis Varnado out of Mississippi State (great help defender and shot blocker) who could be on the board come our pick on Draft Night. He’s only about 6’9, but the days of 7-foot centers are pretty much done.

Coach. I like Byron Scott. His exit from New Orleans was premature, and he did play for Pat Riley on a Laker team that taught me to love the game.

It’s certainly going to be interesting to see which avenues Pat and Arison jr. go down this summer. It’s definitely going to be the most exciting off-season in Heat history :o)

do you think if we make it past the first round of the playoffs (which is very possible), it will give wade more incentive to stay? hopefully if we make a push and look good this spring, it will.

I think Wade spends his entire career in a Heat uni

I don’t think Dwyane Wade is going anywhere. Pat Riley has enough cap space to sign two or three guys who can really help this team excel (not to mention a 1st Round Draft pick). The only team I think has a chance to lure him away is the Bulls. The allure of playing in his hometown and with Derrick Rose may be enough to get him, but I believe the kid has a strong since of loyalty. Going back to Draft Night 03, Wade’s stock had risen after his Final Four run at Marquette, but I don’t know that anyone else was ready to take him as high as Riley did. The Heat gave Wade his start, and he’s won a Championship there.

yeah thats true. i dont think he’d like going into the hall of fame with 2 or 3 different teams with a bunch of titles (eg. Shaq). hopefully one team with a bunch of titles sounds better.
