Miami Heat roll with mostly reserve players, lose in San Antonio
This is a recap done without actually seeing any of the game, just watching on gamecast, so bear with me. Miami came into this game a bit shorthanded, though it is preseason. Erik Spoelstra announced beforehand that the Heat would be without Mario Chalmers, Udonis Haslem, Mike Miller and Carlos Arroyo who were all getting a rest. Also, LeBron James and Chris Bosh would only play the 1st quarter.
LeBron came out firing, hitting two early buckets. Bosh on the other hand wasn't as productive, missing his first four shots and finishing the 1st quarter just 1-for-6 with one rebound. Juwan Howard saw his first action as a member of the Heat, coming into the game 4 minutes in.
Miami trailed early but battled back to tie the game at 26 after 1. LeBron did his thing, scoring 12 points (thanks to going 6-for-6 from the foul line) with 3 boards and 3 assists while playing the entire opening quarter. Pat Beverly started at the point and seemed to be productive, hitting two of his three shots early on.
I would've loved to see how Juwan Howard looked because he seemed to be having a very good 1st half. He started out 3-of-4 from the field with 5 rebounds. Also having a good half was Anthony Mason Jr. He played 10 minutes, hitting 3-of-4 shots for 6 points and 3 rebounds. Big Z also made some contributions, scoring 4 points with 2 boards, helping the Heat take a 46-42 lead into the half.
The only starters out there for the beginning of the 2nd half were Pat Beverly and James Jones. Jammal Magloire started the half and scored quickly with a little 1-foot put back off an Antonio McDyess block of a Beverly layup. It was the Big Cat's first action of the preseason.
As a team the Heat struggled out of the break, getting outscored 21-7 in the first 7+ minutes of the 3rd quarter. Can't say it was all that surprising as the Heat were going with a mostly reserve lineup (other then James Jones) of guys who all likely wont make the final roster.
At this point even just watching the gamecast, it looked like there was some very sloppy basketball being played. 3 second violations, shot clock violations and a lot of missed shots. It got worse for the Heat, who after scoring 17 points in the 3rd quarter put up just 6 points in the first 10:45 of the 4th quarter.
Not that the results matter much, as this game was pretty much a throw away after the 1st quarter. It would've been nice to see how the ‘bubble' guys played, but statistically it was nothing special. Whether or not anyone looked good defensively is yet to be seen but again, judging by the stats it doesn't look like it.
GAME NOTES
- As previously mentioned, LeBron played the entire 1st quarter, finishing with 12 points on 3-of-8 shooting with 3 boards and 3 assists. He went a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line.
- Chris Bosh also played the whole opening quarter, but he struggled. 2 points on 1-of-6 with 1 rebounds and a block.
- James Jones had a good shooting night, hitting 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
- Patrick Beverly played almost the entire game (41 min). He finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, 7 of which came in the 1st half.
- Shavlik Randolph played 24 minutes and turned the ball over 5 times.
- Heat reserves turned the ball over 17 times.
- Dexter Pittman came in at the end and played 12 minutes, scoring 4 points on 2-for-2 shooting with a pair of rebounds.
The Heat's next game is Tuesday night at home against CSKA Moscow. Tipoff is set for 7:30 and again that game will not be televised.

Holy crap at Hasbrouck
He went 2-15???? Kobe did the same vs Spain lol
Wanna prove you are a true heatfan? Remind people you lived through the Mark Blount era
So it was the third-tire guys.
BTW, who is this M.Gladness? I thought we had a enough candidates for just one roster spot.
Mickell Gladness
He is a D-League guy who played a couple games for our Summer League. As we’re already extremely deep at center, he seems to have little to no shot of making it past next week.

Beverley will make the team
He had a game high 10 reb, with 5 ast and NO turnovers. Oh yea had 11 points also. I saw something in him last game I WISH i could of seen this one. Hosbrouck 2 for 15 and randolph with 5 TO thats horrible, they both suck
LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!
Joel Anthony is the man
Henne please don't be good be Great
Bosh's first game vs a team with size since joining the heat
And he’s 1-6.
On the other hand, Z, Magliore, and Pittman shot 5-6 for 10 pts

Oh my...
Please don’t tell me you are suggesting Bosh is going to struggle against a team with size and the 2nd tier guys are better??
Pre-season dude, it’s not the regular season for a reason…plus, he was the only real big guy in Toronto for years (Bargnani doesn’t count and half a season of the Drain doesn’t either nor Nestorivic etc) so I don’t think tall line-ups will worry him that much…

It seems as if our bench, minus a few players, seem to be our achilles' heel.

Heat didn't even play there top 4 guys from the bench.
Heat would destroy the spurs in a regular season game.

Really didn't read to much into the game
Pat Beverly did his thang. I’ve been saying since the Summer League Games that he was a good player I’m just glad he is getting time to show that he has game on both ends of the court. He will make the team off of heart alone. Lets go Heat!!!!!!!!!
Hmm
It was a back 2 back game.
Surely Spo ain’t gonna risk injury to any key player or another member of the 3 kings of Miami.
Beverley did however impress me some what.
But will he make the team and is Butler gonna be cut just cause he is injured?
Miami Thrice is incredible....Heat Tri-nasty is inevitable!
betting healthy Butler is way better than Beverley
But it is betting itself (choosing Butler over the other guys).
James powder thing
You know that thing LeBron James did in Cleveland before every game where he throws powder in the air? Is he going to do that in Miami too or would that be too much disrespect for Wade?
He has stated that he will continue the powder thing as you can see from the picture.
I am fine with that ritual as long as he doesn’t start those disrespectful celebrations before games
What disrespectful celebrations?
Maybe I have rose colored glasses but I actually liked those team poses. I thought it added a little fun to the game.
You are entitled to your opinion, but...
I think they are disrespectful to the other team. D Wade and UD are too classy to allow that this season.
Need to make red powder just for him
LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!

Why the powder to the away fans?
I don’t like that.
Individuals don't win Championships, Teams do.
Chase for 28
He doesn't do it for the fans
it’s his pregame routine, home or away. Just like Wade does the 3 pull ups on the rim before every game.
