With one more cut to make, who will be the odd man out?
After cutting ties with guard Kenny Hasbrouck and forward Shavlik Randolph yesterday, the Heat's roster sits at 16 players. They have until Monday to get it down to 15 and it seems that there are three guys competing for two spots. The three guys are Patrick Beverley, Da'Sean Butler and center Jamaal Magloire.
Beverely has been playing hard for Miami all summer and has impressed the coaches with his hustle on defense, which is absolutely the way to win over this staff. He's still very young and his offensive game can be worked on, but defense is one of those things that's very hard to learn if you don't have a natural ability, which he does.
Magloire has been a big part of the Heat since arriving in Miami back in 2008. He hasn't made a big difference on the court but has been a vocal leader on the bench and in the locker room. However, the team personnel has changed a bit and now the question is whether or not the Heat can afford to keep him around if he isn't going to contribute during games.
Rookie Dexter Pittman is definitely going to make the team and could be a major part of the future of the franchise. The Heat also have centers Joel Anthony and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, both of whom are ahead of Magloire on the depth chart and are expected to be regular contributors.
Then there is rookie Da'Sean Butler, who has yet to play for Miami because he's been rehabbing from tearing his left ACL during the Final Four last March. The ceiling is very high on this kid, and if not for his injury he would've definitely been a 1st round pick. But he wasn't, and instead there are a lot of people saying that Pat Riley got the steal of the draft when he took Butler with the 42nd overall pick.
The Heat is deep enough that they can afford to wait on Butler and allow him to fully recover. Once he is cleared to play, they can begin working him back into game shape and see how well he can do while playing against NBA caliber opposition.
I'm really excited to see what this guy can do when he's ready to go, and as a rookie he couldn't be in a better situation to grow as a player. The experience he'll get practicing with and learning from some of the best players in the NBA on a daily basis is invaluable. Miami also has one of the best coaching staffs in the league, and having Pat Riley in the front office and attending practices wont hurt either.
The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards the Heat hanging on to the two youngsters. If Miami can develop them over the course of their contracts (each signed a 2-year deal this summer), how much brighter does the future of the team look? Yeah it sucks that they'd have to cut loose Jamaal Magloire but he was in line to be inactive for most or all the games.
We wont have to wait very long to find out what direction Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra plan on going with the roster. Miami has to get from 16 players to 15 by Monday, one day before the season opener in Boston. Will they even wait that long? One thing is for sure...while we obviously wont get to see Da'Sean Butler yet, we will get to see Pat Beverely make his final push to make this team during the Heat's final two preseason games.

My vote is for House
Not because i dont like him but he already has a ring. Let the Big Cat get one before he retires. I agree with Butler getting to practice with these guys will make him better, i think the same applies to Pittman banging down low with Magloire. Joel is a help defender not really great at 1 on 1 and Z is to old and slow to help Pittman to be ready this year
LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!
Joel Anthony is the man
Henne please don't be good be Great
For House?
Are you serious bro?
Because he has a ring and you want the big cat to get 1?
You must be kidding homes.
Look House is on our team to bring scrappy defense and a great shooter from deep from any where on the court.
With Miller injured Jones and House are our three point threats.
Magloire does not make our team a +15 so why keep him?
Pittman needs to blossom into a fusion of Mourning and Shaq.
Dude Juwan Howard is older and does more than Magloire.
When was the last time Magloire had 7 rebounds?
Juwan Howard can give you 7 and 7 off the bench with minutes.
Magloire gives you what…..3 points and a rebound?
Joel Anthony already does that!
And he is freaking 6’ 9.
Beverley has won me over, I expect him to take Chalmers minutes.
Pittman will grow and Butler when healthy will be a key role player.
Miami Thrice is incredible....Heat Tri-nasty is inevitable!

House is not that great and he won't be getting much minutes now
Ok with Mike Miller hurt his value increases, but a scrappy defender? come on really.
as for Magloire and Howard, given the same minutes Magloire would be better. The only advantage howard has is he can play the 4 or 5, but against the good big teams Magloire would be more effective. And if you watched any heat games last year that Magloire played in and there where only 36, you would know that when he came in he did his thing. Scoring down low, rebounding, and protecting the basket. All these guys im talking about wont play much anyways
LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!
Joel Anthony is the man
Henne please don't be good be Great
while most people voted magloire, i dint think so because
he is a great leader, and great example to other players, he is also a very hard worker
so I say beverly
Miami's Superstarts: Brandon Marshall, Karlos Dansby, Vontae Davis (just wait), Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and Hanley Ramirez :)
I dont want beverley gone either
I hope its house or howard
LETS GO HEAT!!!!!!!
Joel Anthony is the man
Henne please don't be good be Great
If they don't believe Magloire is capable enough to take minutes from Z
They should probably cut him loose. Of course, big men get hurt, and old big men get hurt a lot. Magloire could become useful if a couple of guys go down, and they don’t want Pittman out there costing them games with inexperience.
Also, is it proper to write “The Heat is deep enough….” or should it be “The Heat are deep enough”? “Heat” is not a plural noun, but “The Heat” refers to a group – you wouldn’t write “The Lakers is deep enough”. I honestly have no idea which one is correct – maybe they should change their name to the Miami Heats to make it easier.

This makes the most sense
The Heat need some youth on the roster – and unless they plan on actually playing Mag in the rotation, it’s a waste of a spot to keep him.

I picked Big Cat to be cut. We already have a good balance of centers.
We have one veteran center. We have a rookie center. And we have our own unique center. As for that last spot though, I’m really torn between the two young guys, but I’d pick Butler for that last spot. How often do we need that 15th man on the court anyway? Whoever we give the last spot to won’t be used much anyway. That way, Butler can heal. I just think it’s too good to pass up. If it wasn’t for the injury, he’d probably be a lottery pick. Might end up being a total steal. Kinda like the likes of Arenas, Boozer or Mo Williams. It’ll be good for the future of the franchise.

As much as I want to keep Magloire,...
I rather have Beverley for a few years than Magloire for one. Plus, He would be, at best, the 13th man this season. Meaning Mogloire wouldn’t even dress for games. I rather have Beverley at the end of the bench learning. I say cut Magloire and if someone gets injured you can always re-sign him. I am assuming he wouldn’t sign with another team very quickly because look how long it is taking for Dampier (a much better player) to sign.
