Despite Pat Riley being fond of centers, he turned down the Memphis Grizzlies offer of the 2nd overall pick (which would've been used on C Hasheem Thabeet) for last years 2nd overall selection in Beasley. Good call Pat...the celing on Beas is much higher then Thabeet, and Riley is still looking to land a big name center from the free agent pool next summer.

Original reports had the Heat making that offer to Memphis, but that was quickly corrected. The same report said that Miami was offering the Grizzlies Mario Chalmers for the 27th overall pick, but again it was the other way around.

coming to the table as a Beas fan, not a heat fan...

as an outsider looking in, you guys are messing beasleys head up. You should have just picked Mayo last year. Pat Slick Back never wanted beasley, hes not his “type” of player. They wanted Mayo and they should have just taken him. Now an amazing talent is rotting on a bench. They use him all wrong, Iso’s is where he does damage, watch the Nuggets and see how they use Melo, thats what B-Easy can do, Spols just dons’t know what hes doing

I agree 100%

Riley and Spoelstra tried to do way to many things with him in his rookie season, he had no stability, played out of position, was rarely given the oppurtunity to contribute all that he is capable of, wasn’t given the proper amount of minutes, and has so much potential but it’s going to waste with him in Miami, he’s not a good fit there. Although I do think one of Miami’s main priorities during the off season is to figure out how to incorporate Beasley into the line-up. Hopefully he will start this season. He was the second leading scorer coming off the bench and averaging about 24 min, so imagine what he will be able to do given more minutes.

I'm fairly certain that they are planning on having Beasley as the starting small forward next season

assuming the ‘summer transformation’ works out. But it may just be for this season w/ Haslem likely heading elsewhere at seasons end. Either way, it will make things interesting and we’ll get a very clear picture of how savvy Beasley is when it comes to playing b-ball…because from what I hear/read he is an incredible basketball talent and ‘can do anything on the court’. We shall see.

Oh, and I wouldn’t have been upset at all if the Heat had drafted Mayo….I kinda thought they were going to after the extra workouts he did for us.

Beasley should be playing small forward,

I think that is where he most productive. If he put more effort into defense than he should’ve started over Haslem, who I do hope is traded. He’s undersized at the power forward position. I also want to see Cook play more this season as well, Miami didn’t use their bench enough.

melo can play D , beasley cannot whatsoever

24 min for your second best player...

Im all about defense don’t get me wrong, but when Joel Anthony gets more min, then your second best player something is wrong. I

center was a need, so joel anthony got mins

starting powerforward was already taken by a championship powerforward-udonis haslem. if beasley was at sf he wud have given up 40 pts per game against the opposing smallforward. true he mite have avg 30 pts a game but it wudnt be worth it.
btw dont try to diss our president…hes a HOFer so juz check urself

Then don't draft him

They knew what they were getting with Beasley, and if they didn’t like it they shouldn’t have drafted him. And its the coaches job to know that Beasley fits better at the SF. If your boy Patty Slick back wanted to take Mayo which he did, then he should have just done it.

I think Riley wanted Beasley,

and in due time he will find his place on the team, hopefully it’s not on the bench. Beasley was a better pick for Miami than Mayo and Spoelstra was a rookie head coach.

if the Grizzlies really offered the #2 pick for Beasley then the Heat didn’t have to draft Thabeet. if Beasley doesn’t fit into what the Heat want to do, maybe one of the PGs could have. sure they have Chalmers, but a star player he will not be. they would have had their pick of PGs. maybe they didn’t love any of the points or perhaps they feel Beasley will eventually be able to adapt to Wade and what the Heat want to do on offense & on defense.

if they wanted more of a shot blocking / jump shooting big man or an athletic, slashing wing player, they probably could have traded down with Minnesota for #6 & #18 and drafted Jordan Hill or taken an athletic SF in Derozan at #6. who knows if they would have been willing to pull the same Lawson deal with Denver for that future Bobcats pick the Nuggets own, but that would likely be on the table.

not saying that it makes the offer a sure thing. just that there were more options than the article seems to imply with its Beasley for Thabeet slant.

Give the kid some time.

Last year was a rebuilding year. Wade was coming back off an injury and we had 2 rookies playing significant minutes, and a rookie head coach. Their all feeling each other out. Beasley will get more time this year and im hoping he will start, but i put faith in Riley, hes gotten us to the mountain top before and he can do it again.

Personally i think Mayo would have been great here with Wade, not to mention Wade LOVED him before the draft when they were working out together. You know Wade wanted Mayo more than Beasley.

I mean I like Beasley...

I see a lot of potential, but that is limited by his height. As you have seen for many years, the NBA is dominated by bigs. You need to have a solid front court. We can win with Chalmers in the back court, but we need to upgrade both forward positions and the center position. As for Beasley, I think he could be a great 3rd guy, but never a star player or even a sidekick. With that being said, I would sacrifice a great prospect like Beas for another shot at the 2nd pick (we should have taken Mayo) if we could get a better sidekick for Wade. Thabeet, at 7’3" will sure up our front court and defense. I would sure like that to happen, because I am sick of Wade doing everything. He averaged more blocks than anybody else on our team. A SG should never lead your team in blocks. Beasley may be capable of blocking more shots than Wade, because he is taller and his arms are longer, but he goes up against guys that are taller and longer than him almost every play. Thabeet would definitely have been an upgrade.

I don’t think Memphis really offered it though. They need front court help as much as we do. Rudy Gay and Beas at SF & PF could be a great scoring threat though. Round that out with Mayo, Gasol, and Conley and that almost sounds dangerous. Almost.

Album coming soon

Wade averaged 14 more minutes than Beasley,

so for Beasley to produce or match what Wade did in any area isn’t fair, and Wade is more experienced. Investing $23mil/yr. in JO makes it clear Miami is using him as their center, plus Thabeet is very limited and Miami doesn’t need another rookie, especially in this terrible draft. Beasley isn’t limited by height, he’s 6’9-6’10, it’s because he’s a small forward not a power forward which is where he played most his minutes behind Haslem so between that and playing only 24min. a game is why Beasley wasn’t as effective as he could be just look at his PER/36.

Oh and there is only like 5 dominant bigs,

and not many more power fowards, guards are taken over.
