Michael Beasley's bench time getting lots of attention

84841893_medium

Less then 24 hours after the Heat moved to 4-1 on the young season, the hot topic is why hasn't Michael Beasley been involved more during the bigger minutes of the game.  People are up in arms about their starting power forward barely being used during the 2nd half of the last two games.

Take a good look at Beasley.  He has shown some real flashes of greatness in many different ways, whether it be shooting, driving, rebounding...whatever.  But the lack of consistency is what keeps him from playing big minutes. Show me the game where Beasley is on fire, scoring at will and rebounding well, and I'll show you the game where he's on the floor in the final minutes instead of watching from the bench.

I can't see blaming Erik Spoelstra for wanting to have more consistent players (Udonis Haslem and Quentin Richardson) in the game when one bad possession can really hurt you.  It's just a little frustrating when your former 2nd overall pick plays under 10 minutes in the 2nd half of back-to-back games.  He played 9:10 on Tuesday against the Suns and 9:45 Wednesday night in D.C, after which Coach Spoelstra explained why he left Beasley on the bench again.

"I struggled with it and I was thinking about it," Spoelstra said, "He's going to get his opportunity. We need him. We're going to need him to play an important role and tonight I just went a different direction with the guys that were in the game."

It appears that until Beasley can be count on as a guy who can deliver on both ends of the floor down the stretch, he'll continue to get minutes in the first three quarters so he can improve and further develop his game, but not when there is a premium of defense just as much as offense.   But with guys like Haslem and Richardson playing so well, it seems we only have things to look forward to.  The Heat are 4-1 and still getting better.  Wait until Daequan Cook and James Jones are back in the rotation...

So far I've noticed...

When he is in with the 2nd unit as the go to offensive guy, he doesn’t get it done/convert baskets. Sometimes he gets good looks but he just misses. Hopefully this doesn’t last. Maybe he should lose the braid and cut the hair.

When hes out there as the first offensive option he just looks lost

I dont trust that second unit at all when Beasley is in.

that really wasn't the case last yr

there were games I remember him taking over and then he didn’t really have an NBA body

I dont know if he really took any games over

Dont get me wrong, in some games he was a strong contributor, but i wouldnt say he took them over. Im just being impatient and i want him to develop already

It's good at least that he is starting!

He brings size and athleticism to the starting 5. He is still struggling as a scorer in the NBA. He has the skills and just needs to figure out when and where to use them and not choke. Dirk Nowitzki didn’t get it right away, and niether did Chris Bosh, but neither put up as good numbers as rookies as Michael Beasley did. He is only 20 years old and has a lot of years in the NBA left.

Maybe he should be playing with Jamal McGloire?

He might be puting up better numbers with the starters if he were starting with McGloire. McGloire is more of a back to the basket scorer and rebounder, and maybe in his prime a better defender and shot blocker. Wade and Oneal are going to want their shots and Oneal and Beasley both seem to need shots facing the basket. The future of the Miami Heat should be Wade and Beasley playing together. Here is who I think should start:
pg-Chalmers
sg-Wade
sf-Richardson
pf-Beasley
C-Mcgloire

The bench should be:
sg/pg- arroyo
sg/sf-cook/diawara
pf/c- Oneal/haslem

There would be no confusion as who the scorers are in the starting line up. Right now Beasley is trying to be the number 3 scorer in the starting line up and then be the number 1 scorer as a reserve and switching roles back and forth like that just isn’t easy.
